For those of you that’ve been waiting with baited breath, included are notifications for: messages, wall posts, feed comments and replies, photo tags and replies, or in short about everything your addiction requires. We’ve not had a chance to light our screens up with this just yet, so why not be a dear and give it a go and let us know what you think. Windows Phone Marketplace now populated by 25,000 apps, speeding up rate of growth
July 2nd, 2011
admin It’s not just Apple’s App Store striding past milestones today, Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace has also rounded a notable marker in its development. Specifically, it’s now reported to have passed 25,000 apps by one site tracking comings and goings within it, though that figure’s up for debate as the other WP7 apps tracker still lists the total at just under 25k. The main point is that the WP7 ecosystem is growing, and faster than previously at that — it took until the end of March to accrue 11,500 apps , a span of five months from its launch , whereas the last 13.5k have come in the brisker period of three months. Provided this acceleration continues, and there’s no reason to expect it’ll slow down with Mango on the horizon, Microsoft’s mobile OS reboot promises to be in pretty competitive shape in time for its first anniversary — a notable feat considering how far behind WinMo had fallen. Perhaps RIM can use this as an instructive example? Angry Birds lands on Windows Phone 7, ready to explore the third ecosystem
June 29th, 2011
admin Nowadays, you can’t really claim to have a mobile OS worthy of the title if your users can’t run Angry Birds on it. Good news from Microsoft, then, as Windows Phone 7 can finally be admitted at the grown-up table now that it has released its port of Rovio’s epic bird-launching experience. $2.99 is the Marketplace price for the full version, though there’s also the option to try out the first few levels for free. Because, you know, there might still be people out there who haven’t yet been exposed to the charms of this perniciously addictive little game. Nokia’s first Windows Phone: images and video, codenamed ‘Sea Ray’
June 23rd, 2011
admin Ok, this one’s odd. In fact, we didn’t believe the images until a video just surfaced showing Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop, foolishly asking a crowd of people to “put away their cameras” for the unveiling of something “super confidential,” codenamed “Sea Ray.” Naturally, a few people ignored the plea for “no pictures please” and, indeed, leaked the new device out to the blogosphere. What is it? Why, it’s Nokia’s first Windows Phone. While it looks nearly identical to the just announced N9 , the different LED placement on the back (in line with the same 8 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens ) confirms its a new device as does the additional hardware button (for shutter release, we presume) along the side. And the fact that it’s running Windows 7 Mango seals the deal. See a few more shots and a snippet of the video after the break, then hit up the source to see the video uncut. [Thanks, Advil and Zeban] Continue reading Nokia’s first Windows Phone: images and video, codenamed ‘Sea Ray’ Nokia’s first Windows Phone: images and video, codenamed ‘Sea Ray’ originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 08:01:00 EST. HTC 7 Pro continues its tour of smaller carriers, launches on Cellular South for $200
June 19th, 2011
jedwan Four months after launching on Sprint under the moniker HTC Arrive, it looks like the HTC 7 Pro is making the rounds among smaller carriers: earlier this week it hit US Cellular, and starting today you can also pick one up through Cellular South for $199.99 with a two-year contract and a $50 main-in reabte. To recap, the 7 Pro is a full tilt-up QWERTY slider with a 3.6-inch WVGA display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5 megapixel camera, and 16GB of storage. So is it worth the $200? That all depends on how long you’ve been holding out for Microsoft’s slick Metro UI — the 7 Pro is, after all, the only WP7 device you can buy through Cellular South. Full press release after the break. ChevronWP7 Labs will jailbreak your Windows Phone with Microsoft’s approval
June 18th, 2011
admin Microsoft just earned itself a boatload of geek-cred and made Apple and Sony look pretty bad in the process. We knew the Windows Phone team was playing nice with the jailbreakers from ChevronWP7, but we didn’t realize just how cozy the two were going to get. Today the devs announced that ChevronWP7 Labs would open up soon, with the approval of Redmond, allowing users to load homebrew apps on their handsets. Unlike tools from the iPhone Dev Team , this service won’t be free. Instead, customers will have to cough up a small fee via PayPal — but we’re sure many of you are more than willing to pay a reasonable price to avoid the sort of cat and mouse game Apple has been playing with hackers since 2007. Evernote hits Windows Phone 7, marches steadily toward complete device domination
June 18th, 2011
admin Evernote this week announced that its eponymous note-taking software has finally hit Windows Phone 7, the latest in a long line of platforms that includes everything from webOS to Google Wave. Like the dozen or so other versions, the app is all about saving ideas and syncing them across compatible devices. This one, however, was built around WP7′s UI, with pivoting panels devoted to Notes, Notebooks, Tags, and Recent Notes. The app is available now for free from the App Hub, so take note — by writing the information on your hand or something. Microsoft details SkyDrive integration with Windows Phone Mango (video)
June 9th, 2011
admin We already knew Windows Phone Mango would include SkyDrive functionality , but Microsoft has now released a few more details on some of the cloud storage features we can expect to see when the update rolls out, later this year. With the update, SkyDrive users will be able to share their stored photos via text message, e-mail or IM, and to upload their videos to the cloud with the touch of a button. They’ll also be able to browse, share and edit uploaded MS Office documents directly from their handhelds, while searching through their entire SkyDrive via the Office Hub. Storage limits remain capped at 25GB, though Microsoft says we should expect to see more cloud-based features roll out in the near future (including a revamped, HTML5-based SkyDrive web interface), so more changes may very well be on the horizon. Soar past the break for some demo videos from Redmond, along with a hands-on clip from WinRumors . Microsoft combating bulk publishing in Marketplace, limiting certifications to 20 per day
June 8th, 2011
jedwan By a rough estimate, the library at Windows Marketplace now tops 21,000 apps — nearly twice the amount we reported near the end of May . While some platforms might be envious of this recent flurry, many of the titles are merely variants of single applications — uploaded by the hundreds — that flood the Marketplace , while forcing other qualified coders from the spotlight. It’s no cakewalk for customers either, who must wade through the deluge when shopping. In attempt to bring sanity to its store, the company is now restricting developers to (a rather lenient) 20 certifications per day and is pulling the worst offenders from the shelves. Not looking to burn bridges, however, Microsoft has promised to teach methods of creating custom, localized apps without the need for submitting dozens of versions. Supporting in-app purchasing would be a fine start, but we’ll leave that for Mr. Ballmer to flesh out. Not like he’s busy with anything else these days.
