It seems the Samsung Fascinate is receiving another update from Verizon — though minor in comparison to this delicious serving of Froyo — and this time it’s targeting the update process itself. Once you finish pulling in nearly 100MB over Big Red’s network, version ED04 promises to improve the delivery of OTA updates — a blessing if you’ve ever experienced a bricked install. Additionally, missed opportunities will be minimized thanks to a fix that sharpens the phone’s ability to receive inbound calls. Unfortunately, this also means no excuses for “missing” that call from your employer, so you’d best keep that last bit under wraps. It’ll be our secret. [Thanks, Jesus] Verizon updates Fascinate to improve calls and… well, updates of course originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 06:16:00 EST. Droid 2 Global gets Gingerbread, customizable dock and more in latest update from Verizon
June 15th, 2011
admin Droid 2 Global users, your moment in the Gingerbread sun has arrived. Verizon’s put up a page with download instructions for a 103MB update, taking your QWERTY slider from version 2.4.330 to 4.5.600. Updating isn’t the most taxing of activities, you just look for a system update in the About Phone menu and then give your blessing for the download to commence. VZW will also be prompting tardy users to take their OTA medicine in due course. So what’s new apart from Android 2.3? Well, the big change is that the previously static phone, contacts and apps icons at the bottom of the UI have now been turned into a user-customizable dock, with three links of your choosing sidling up next to the App Launcher. There’s also a freshened up UI look , a Download Manager App, user-definable App Groups, encryption for data both on the device and its SD card, improvements in battery life while using WiFi and Bluetooth, and the obligatory stability fixes. If all that sounds irresistible and you have the requisite phone in hand, go get it! Motorola Droid / Milestone 3 gets previewed, Verizon release finally nearing?
June 14th, 2011
jedwan The Motorola Droid 3 hasn’t exactly been doing the best job of staying under wraps, and it (or the international Milestone 3 variant, to be specific) has now landed in the hands of Chinese website xda.cn , which has provided what’s surely the most extensive look at the phone to date. That includes some additional confirmation of specs like a 4-inch qHD screen (of the PenTile variety, it seems), an 8 megapixel camera, HDMI out and a 1500 mAh battery, as well as what appear to be the first benchmarks of the phone and its dual-core OMAP 4430 processor, which is apparently slightly hampered by a mere 512MB of RAM. In other Droid 3 news, Droid Life notes that the device has turned up in Gameloft’s compatibility listings for its Android games, and says that its hearing that Verizon is now targeting a July 7th launch. That’s obviously still far from confirmed, but it seems safe to bet that a release can’t be too much farther off now. Hit the source link below for xda.cn ‘s complete preview. Samsung Galaxy S II said to be Verizon-bound in July
June 9th, 2011
jedwan Absence makes the heart grow fonder, so when it comes to the Samsung Galaxy S II , our tiny American hearts are getting rather sick of all the love we’ve been experiencing lately. Computerworld’s latest rumor may be just what we need to stay sane for another month, though; it cites an unnamed Verizon spokesperson who mentioned this Fascinate follow-up, which will likely be known as the Function , will be coming in for a soft landing sometime in July, though no specifics were offered. The Galaxy S II is already being sold in Europe and Asia and blends a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, Gingerbread, dual-core 1.2GHz CPU, and many more top-of-the-line specs into one sleek and gorgeous package. If the July window is accurate, it means Verizon could be one of the first US carriers out of the gate with the phone. This is great news for the carrier that was, of the four national powers, dead last in getting its model of the Galaxy S to market. We’re anxiously awaiting word from a Verizon spokesperson for additional comment and will keep you posted — if our heart hasn’t popped out of our chest by then. Motorola Droid 3 leaks out in tutorial vids, confirms 8MP camera and 1080p recordings (video)
June 7th, 2011
admin Verizon and Motorola have kept a tighter lid on the Droid 3 than many recent smartphones we’ve seen, but a nice big leak just sprang from the bottom of the pot — startup gadget blog PhonePads obtained three tutorial videos of the five-row QWERTY slider strutting its stuff. While there’s no discussion of any dual-core silicon , there is indeed an 8 megapixel camera on board, which is apparently capable of 1080p HD video recordings. Other changes include what seem to be a pair of volume keys on the right edge (instead of the usual rocker), the apparent lack of a dedicated camera button, and both micro-USB and mini-HDMI on the left edge in the Droid X2 configuration. You’ll apparently still get your Swype virtual keyboard, but it’s hard to say what version of Android the handset will include — Verizon clearly states “Software Shown Not Final” on every single video. Find more footage after the break. Droid Bionic benchmark reports PowerVR GPU, new SOC inside?
May 29th, 2011
jedwan A very strange thing popped up on mobile graphic benchmarking site NenaMark the other day — an entry for the Droid Bionic. Now, it would be very easy to fake this test, and you’d be right to be skeptical given the incomplete score and the fact that it’s reporting PowerVR’s SGX 540 GPU, instead of the Tegra 2 we saw at CES . But, let’s not be too hasty — we heard back in April that NVIDIA’s mobile chip wasn’t playing nice with Verizon’s LTE. Perhaps when Motorola said it was delaying the Bionic to incorporate “several enhancements” it really meant “rebuilding the phone with a more LTE friendly CPU.” Both Samsung and Texas Instruments use the SGX 540, and Moto has previously turned to TI’s OMAP for the Droid, Droid 2, and Droid X. Then again, a single, suspiciously low benchmark score isn’t the most convincing basis for a rumor. LG Revolution root method promises to silence Bing’s chime
May 29th, 2011
admin If you’re looking to banish Bing from your LG Revolution , then roll up those sleeves because root access is now possible on Verizon’s latest LTE-equipped wunderphone. The process is relatively straightforward (provided you know what you’re doing), and uses the rageagainstthecage method to unlock your handset’s full potential. This crack comes one day following the phone’s release , which suggests LG didn’t expend much effort locking this one down. There’s just two caveats here. First, you must install and configure the Android Debug Bridge (ADB), which puts the rage into your Revolution. Second, there’s currently no option for recovery images — which must be addressed for custom ROMs to be of any value. Still, if you’re undeterred (or really want to eliminate bloatware), just follow the source for this superuser solution. HTC Merge makes an official landing at US Cellular May 31 for $250
May 26th, 2011
admin If we could bet on phone launches the same way we put money down on horse races or slot machines, we’d lose our shirts on the HTC Merge. Like a ghost, this elusive Android smartphone has an innate ability to pop up from out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly. Over the last few months we’ve seen this repeated multiple times on both Verizon’s and US Cellular’s ends — until yesterday, that is, when the latter finally ended its part of the charade by announcing a launch date. Taking on Facebook, the regional carrier officially committed the Merge to a May 31st launch, selling for $250 with contract before $100 rebate. Oddly, the date won’t matter much since store reps have the go-ahead to sell it as soon as it’s in stock (according to the screenshot below), and the Facebook post reveals that shipments should begin arriving as early as today. If you’ve been wanting a Merge and are up to the task, we invite you — nay, we challenge you — to go to your local store this morning and see if your rep got the memo. Verizon bonanza: Droid X2, Revolution, Trophy, and Xperia Play hit Big Red today
May 26th, 2011
jedwan Verizon is seriously diversifying its portfolio today with the official in-store launch of four new smartphones. Three of them roll up in Android gear, though they all have major selling points beyond Google’s software. LG’s Revolution is the sole LTE -capable handset of the bunch, bringing with it a 4.3-inch screen and pre-installed Netflix for $250. The Droid X2 undercuts it on price, at $200, but doubles the core count with its Tegra 2 processor and ramps up resolution to qHD (960 x 540). Gaming aficionados can spend the same amount on the Xperia Play from Sony Ericsson, which offers a slideout gamepad and unique PlayStation Certified status. Bringing up the rear is HTC’s well-traveled Trophy , a 3.8-inch Windows Phone that accepts it’s a little late to the party and therefore slices $50 off its asking price, with a $150 levy before the obligatory two-year contract. What say you — buy, try, or keep waiting? Verizon bonanza: Droid X2, Revolution, Trophy, and Xperia Play hit Big Red today originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 26 May 2011 02:30:00 EST. HTC Trophy checks into Costco’s inventory system
May 19th, 2011
jedwan Every time we’re ready to file the Verizon’s HTC Trophy under ‘myth’, it peeks out to say hello . In this particular case, the evasive Windows Phone was caught in Costco’s inventory system offered for $150 — around the starting price we’d come to expect for it being Verizon’s very first WP7 device. Unfortunately we aren’t any closer to uncovering the Trophy’s planned release date, but seeing it in the computer with a price attached gives us greater hope that we’ll find it stocked on store shelves sooner rather than later.
