MagicJack rival NetTalk is planning to crawl out of the infomercial doldrums and launch its own, branded LTE wireless service with the aid of LightSquared . See, when the cellular wholesaler is done taking out GPS signals it plans to sell space on its network to other companies who will then market it to consumers — and NetTalk wants to be one of those companies. Obviously, offering mobile voice and data is new territory for the VoIP provider but, as always, more competition on the cellular scene is quite welcome. It’s still too early for details like pricing, features, or devices, but we do have some lovely PR after the break. webOS Skype integration revealed in screenshots
June 20th, 2011
admin We know you’ve all been losing sleep, wondering what exactly Skype integration on webOS will look like. Well, tonight, you should sleep like a baby, knowing you’ve gotten a solid peak at how the Pre 3 will hande the VoIP service. Similar to Google Voice on Android, you’ll be able to either route all international calls through Skype or force is to ask every time you press that precious dial button. We also know that it will be able to handle video calls and, at least on the O2 network in Germany, both voice and video chat will be available over WiFi and 3G. You’ll also be able to initiate sessions from either contacts or the messaging menu, so there’s no need to fire up a separate app. Now, we just need HP to get this out the door and for Microsoft to work out those reliability kinks . Check out the source link for the full-sized images. webOS Skype integration revealed in screenshots originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 19 Jun 2011 19:20:00 EST. Viber VoIP app hits Android, serves up cross-platform 3G voice and text (video)
May 6th, 2011
jedwan What’s better than free in-app 3G calling? Cross-platform 3G calling. Delivering on old promises , Viber is offering an Android version of their free, no-registration VoIP app to beta applicants this week. The Android beta keeps everything from the iPhone original, plus a few bonus features — including the ability to respond to text messages without opening the app, natively viewable in-app call logs from non-Viber calls, and the ability to set Viber as the default dialer for all applications. All this, and cross platform support? Sign us up! Oh, wait — no registration required. It just works. The current version of the app has been tested on devices from Samsung, HTC, Sony Ericsson, and more, but the full release is waiting on beta testers to weigh in on the fragmentation front. See a video of Android and iOS playing nice after the break. Skype for Android update adds US 3G calling, fixes personal data hole
April 21st, 2011
jedwan Verizon Android users have had 3G Skype calling since this time last year , but the latest app release — v1.0.0.983 for those of you keeping tabs — brings 3G calling to the masses, without the need for a VZW-sanctioned app. The update also patches a rather significant security hole discovered last week , which could let third-party apps get hold of your personal information. We’re glad to see that’s no longer the case, and who’s going to object to free calling as part of the deal as well? Make sure your phone’s running Android 2.1 (2.2 for Galaxy S devices) and head on over to the Android Market to get updated. Skype for Android vulnerable to hack that compromises personal info
April 15th, 2011
jedwan If you didn’t already have enough potential app privacy leaks to worry about, here’s one more — Android Police discovered that that Skype’s Android client leaves your personal data wide open to assault. The publication reports that the app has SQLite3 databases where all your info and chat logs are stored, and that Skype forgot to encrypt the files or enforce permissions, which seems to be a decision akin to leaving keys hanging out of the door. Basically, that means a rogue app could grab all your data and phone home — an app much like Skypwned. That’s a test program Android Police built to prove the vulnerability exists, and boy, oh boy does it work — despite only asking for basic Android storage and phone permissions, it instantly displayed our full name, phone number, email addresses and a list of all our contacts without requiring so much as a username to figure it out. Android Police says Skype is investigating the issue now, but if you want to give the VoIP company an extra little push we’re sure it couldn’t hurt.
