Samsung publicly acknowledges the Conquer 4G’s existence, then changes its mind

We’re inclined to take a company’s word when it releases official pics and specs on its own website, but it throws us for a loop when that page gets taken down as quickly as it goes up. Such is the tale of the Samsung Conquer 4G , a mid-range Android WiMAX handset destined for Sprint . Its official product page was live for only a brief lapse of time, but long enough to glean some press shots and specs. According to the site, we can expect the Conquer 4G to have some befitting internals: a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 CPU, Gingerbread, 3.5-inch HVGA panel and 3.2MP rear / 1.3MP front cameras. It’d be a respectable option for anyone wanting a 4G device without the glitz and glamour (and, we assume, the cost) of the EVO 3D. While no pricing or availability was set, a closer look at the press shot shows the date as “July 15, 2011.” We’re still waiting for confirmation from company reps to find out what’s going on, but we’ll shout from the rooftops if we learn any juicy tidbits. Nothing like a good mystery to help us stay awake through the middle of the day, right? GSM turns 20 today, still rocking the world

Happy birthday, dear Global System for Mobile Communications! 20 years ago today, on July 1 1991, the world’s first GSM call was made by Finnish Prime Minister Harri Holkeri. The historic call used Nokia gear on GSM’s original 900MHz band. Today GSM is all grown up and ruling the world — connecting 1.5 billion people in 212 countries and serving 80% of the planet’s mobile market. GSM gave us a number of firsts. It was the first fully digital cellular system using TDMA to cram more information into less spectrum and provide better sounding, more reliable calls using less power. It introduced the Subscriber Identity Module ( SIM ), the idea of switching handsets at will (something carriers have sought to subvert by locking phones), and the reality of international roaming. Short Messaging Service ( SMS ) was first launched on GSM networks, along with packet data ( GPRS and later EDGE ), which made internet access practical on mobile devices. Eventually, GSM expanded to the 400, 800, 1800 and 1900MHz bands and evolved into WDCMA-based UMTS (3G) and later HSPA and HSPA+, followed by LTE (4G) networks. So next time you’re at the coffee shop sipping on that latte while uploading that video to YouTube at 10Mbps using your LTE phone, remember to be thankful for that first GSM call 20 years ago — that’s when the mobile revolution really started. OnLive CEO reveals ‘entirely new approach’ to wireless, credits Rearden for toppling Shannon’s Law

“In advance, yes — you’re right, it’s impossible. But nonetheless, we have ten radios all working at the same frequency, all at the Shannon limit… and there’s no interference.” You may not fully grok the significance of that statement, but anyone heavily involved in solving the wireless bandwidth crisis is probably dropjawed. For a little background, there’s a perceived limit in wireless known as Shannon’s Law, which largely explains why no one can watch a YouTube clip on their EVO at Michigan Stadium. For whatever reason, it’s been assumed that this law was fundamentally unbreakable, but it looks as if an unlikely member of society may have just overrode expectations. OnLive’s CEO Steve Perlman recently revealed a breakthrough from Rearden Companies — in short, they’ve figured out a workaround, and in testing, it’s doing things like “removing dead zones” altogether. His slide, shown during a presentation at Columbia, notes that the implications here are “profound,” and we couldn’t agree more. Do yourself a solid and hit play in the video below the break — we’ve fast-forwarded to where this section begins. Nokia’s N950 demos MeeGo Harmattan in marathon video

Still obsessing about Nokia’s N950 — you know, the sexy developer-only MeeGo device you can’t have? Before you let Elop rain on your parade , indulge yourself with an exhaustive 17 minute video from Thailand, dutifully documenting every nook and cranny of Espoo’s ill-fated OS. The long-winded film tours the dialer, browser, and gives a peek at a plethora of camera settings — like ISO, aspect ratio, and timers — that we didn’t get to see on the N9 . Also making an appearance are maps with turn-by-turn navigation, what appears to be a document viewer, and a Facebook app. Go on, have a gander, and dream about a luscious MeeGo future that might have been. Google Talk video chat finally available over T-Mobile 3G and 4G (video)

Remember how excited we all were when we found out that Android 2.3.4 would bring video chat to Google Talk on the Nexus S? Only to have our hopes and dreams smashed when we discover that it didn’t work over 3G on T-Mobile. Well, it seems the carrier has quietly flipped a switch, and now all you Nexus owners can GChat face-to-face over HSPA+. Surely this an historic day, one that will go down in the annals of mobile history — or, you know, at least one that deserves an exasperated ” finally! ” Check out the video proof after the break.
