Windows Phone 7.5 Mango in-depth preview (video)

Make no mistake, Microsoft isn’t playing coy in the smartphone market any longer. The folks in Redmond are making a significant jump forward in the mobile arena, announcing that the upcoming version of Windows Phone, codenamed “Mango,” will be heading to a device near you in time for the holidays. As its competitors have raised the bar of expectations to a much higher level, Microsoft followed suit by adding at least 500 features to its mobile investment, which the company hopes will plug all of the gaping holes the first two versions left open. We received a Samsung Focus preloaded with the most recent developer build (read: not even close to the market release version) and we had a few good days to put it through its paces. It’s still far from completion, as there were several key features that we couldn’t test out; some weren’t fully implemented, and others involved third-party apps that won’t be updated until closer to launch. Yet we don’t want to call this build half-baked — in fact, it was surprisingly smooth for software that still has at least four months to go before it’s available for public consumption. At the risk of sounding ridiculously obvious, we’re mighty interested in seeing the final result when all is said and done this holiday season. As a disclaimer, we can’t guarantee that the stuff we cover here will actually look or act the same when it’s ready to peek out and make its official introduction in Q4; as often happens, features and UI enhancements are subject to be changed by the Windows Phone team as Mango gets closer and closer to release. Let’s get straight to brass tacks, since there’s a lot of details to dive into. It’d be best to grab a large beverage (we’d recommend a Big Gulp, at least ), find your most comfortable chair, and meet us after the break. Verizon updates Fascinate to improve calls and… well, updates of course

It seems the Samsung Fascinate is receiving another update from Verizon — though minor in comparison to this delicious serving of Froyo — and this time it’s targeting the update process itself. Once you finish pulling in nearly 100MB over Big Red’s network, version ED04 promises to improve the delivery of OTA updates — a blessing if you’ve ever experienced a bricked install. Additionally, missed opportunities will be minimized thanks to a fix that sharpens the phone’s ability to receive inbound calls. Unfortunately, this also means no excuses for “missing” that call from your employer, so you’d best keep that last bit under wraps. It’ll be our secret. Bing Mobile updated, news and maps get minor facelifts

How can you “be what’s next” without having what’s next on your phone? Bing is here to help you fulfill its tagline by updating its mobile site for any device that runs HTML5. If the update had a highlight reel to show off the newest features, here’s what would be on it: a carousel-like interface in the news section that lets you swipe your finger left or right to switch to other categories; maps that show directions together in split-screen format; a search history complete with trending topics; and the ability to share images and links on Facebook. The new enhancements are now available to iOS, Android, and BlackBerry, so it’s an easy jaunt over to your browser to check it out. Or, if you’re reading this on your phone, give the ol’ More Coverage link a quick tap. Microsoft outlines new features for Windows Phone Mango’s Music and Video Hubs

When Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone Mango last month, the company spent a lot of time walking us through some of the 500-plus changes to the OS — most notably, conversation threads, people groups, enhanced search functionality , Twitter and LinkedIn integration, IE9, and the instantly responsive Bing Vision . It’s no wonder, then, that Redmond didn’t have much time to talk multimedia. Well, the company just spilled the beans in a blog post, laying out a raft of new features that runs the gamut from podcasts to improved playback controls. We’ve got a lot to recap, so join us past the break, won’t you? Tech Support

Tech support? “Server not found” What gives? I used to proudly announce that AT&T was my wireless carrier now I’m not so sure. I’m a windows phone user, my device is an HTC Surround (love the phone). It seems to me that AT&T is really screwing up the updates to windows phone, Samsung focus is constantly having issues and the supposedly delivered updates for the surround are nowhere to be found. Devices on other carriers through out the world are having a lot less issues than those on AT&T’s network. The only thing the company seems to have going for it is that it’s GSM band devices can be used globally ( if you travel definitely get your device carrier unlocked, service is much cheaper elsewhere and beats any special plan offered by AT&T). Come now people, keep your customers informed and satisfied.

iOS 5 updates expected to be carried over-the-air, at least for the Verizon iPhone

Having spent a good part of our day yesterday negotiating with iTunes and downloading a whopping 666.2MB file to update our iPhone to version 4.3.3 — a version, we might add, whose sole claim to fame is the removal of things — we know well the pains of updating Apple’s mobile software. Those aches, however, may soon be coming to an end. 9to5Mac has multiple sources informing it that Apple and Verizon are scheming to start delivering iOS updates over the air from this fall, or just as soon as iOS 5 is made available. Untethered OS updates are a familiar feature to users of other smartphone operating systems and even the iOS-infused Apple TV , but getting Apple’s mobile devices up to date has so far always required going through the company’s own cable and software. There’s no reason to believe this wireless update feature will be limited to Verizon, mind you — that’s just where the informants are coming from in this instance — though Apple will almost certainly have to alter the file sizes of its updates. We can’t think of many carriers who’ll be happy to push more than half a gigabyte of data per user per update. Additionally, since iTunes currently acts as the major backup hub, 9to5Mac speculates Cupertino must be working on a cloud backup service as well, which would seem a very sensible idea. Of course, that doesn’t paint a very happy or busy future for iTunes, but so what? iOS 5 updates expected to be carried over-the-air, at least for the Verizon iPhone originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 05 May 2011 04:09:00 EST. Twitter for BlackBerry 1.1 sheds beta tag, blossoms into official app

My, how apps seem to grow up so fast. It wasn’t too long ago that Twitter for BlackBerry 1.1 came out as a limited beta , but it’s already time for the young app to leave the nest. After enduring a hard two months of beta testing, this renovation effectively adds a few new features and UI enhancements including geotag support, push notifications for mentions, hashtag autocomplete, and a groovy “pull to refresh” shortcut – much akin to the iOS and Android versions . That’s not all, folks: updated graphics and support for 5 new languages were thrown in as well. If you’re ready to get your tweet on and have a BlackBerry running OS 4.5 or higher, take a little journey downwards to the source and get that update.
