Okay, we’ve played this game before, but that was almost three years ago. This time, Nokia’s really leaving Japan, and they’re taking their fancy luxury phones with them. Actually, Nokia’s high-end Vertu phones were all it had left in the land of the rising sun, and even those were only readily available in Tokyo’s Shibuya and Ginza districts — so out of Japan by the end of July? No problem. The phones may be gone by August, but the Finish firm will retain offices in Tokyo through the end of the year to manage refunds, tidy up, and bid farewell to the robot loving maidens of Tokyo’s commercial district. Nokia pulls out of Japan, once again, nobody notices originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 01 Jul 2011 19:23:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Permalink

EVO 3D at the FCC redux: now with AWS 3G (update)
July 2nd, 2011
jedwan Well, what have we here? Another HTC EVO 3D , aka the PG86300, has landed on the FCC’s doorstep — only this time it’s packing radios similar to those seen in the phone’s European edition . This one works on the 1700MHz AWS band, so it appears could be destined for duty in the pockets of T-Mobile’s magenta-clad masses, though we can’t say for sure. However, now that the government’s decreed this EVO’s electronics won’t fry our brains, it shouldn’t be be long before we find out. Update: This FCC filing is most likely for the European EVO 3G, which, like the European Sensation and Flyer, features a tri-band 3G (HSPA+) radio with 2100 / 1700 (AWS) and 900MHz as well as a quadband 2G radio. This means you’ll possibly be able to import the handset unlocked from Europe and use it with 3G on carriers like T-Mobile USA or Wind in Canada. Sorry, AT&T customers, no 3G soup for you! The Engadget Show – 022: Gadgets get smashed, Rick Karr talks broadband, Peter Rojas and Ryan Block tell us what moved them
June 28th, 2011
admin The Engadget Show is back! Last time it was gaming, this time we go for something with a bit more variety. The show starts with Tim and Brian taking a quick look over some of the month’s biggest gadgets, like the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 , the HTC EVO 3D , and a pair of new readers: the Barnes & Noble Nook WiFi and the Kobo eReader Touch Edition . After that it’s sledgehammer time, where Brian and Terrence work through some pent-up frustrations by beating the silicon out of a series of durable gadgets, all captured in delicious slow motion. Some survived, some did not. Then, we all learn a lesson as Rick Karr stops by to talk about the (sorry) state of US broadband compared to the rest of the world. Next, we take it to the streets to ask you what your most important gadgets are before being joined in the studio by the Engadget founder Peter Rojas and Editor Emeritus Ryan Block, the duo behind GDGT, to talk about the gadgets that most affected them in their time at the site and beyond, also taking some questions from eager audience members about, well, gadgety things. Finally, we all get carried deep into the aural environment of Chrome Canyon. It’s a tech-heavy, action-packed show this week that you won’t want to miss. So what are you waiting for? Watch it now! The video stream is above, or download the show in HD below! CSI Virtual MasterCard app bringing mobile payments to iOS, Android and BlackBerry
June 28th, 2011
jedwan Shortly after MasterCard announced plans to become entangled with Google Wallet (and a few months after those ambitious Isis plans were shelved ), it looks as if the aforesaid company is diving into yet another mobile payment arena. And this time, it’s personal. MasterCard and CSI Enterprises already offer a smattering of customized business cards for those with highly specific needs, and soon that partnership will extend to iOS, Android and BlackBerry OS. We’ve confirmed that the CSI Virtual MasterCard app is currently scheduled to launch in July, presumably enabling folks with a GlobalVCard to use their mobile device of choice to make payments. What’s interesting here is the inclusion of RIM and iOS; there’s no BlackBerry device (nor iOS device) on the market today with NFC , which leads us to believe one of two things: that’s either changing by July, or this here service won’t rely on NFC at all. Needless to say, we’ll keep you posted — nothing like another way to more easily indebt yourself. Re: My Inspire 4g is getting horrible speeds
June 26th, 2011
jedwan Did you check for and install the software upgrade? It’s supposed to affect the HSPA+ (H+). If not, to download and install it, turn on your phone’s wi-fi and go to: [ Home> Menu> Settings> AT&T Software Update> HTC Wi-Fi software update ]. It will install automatically — just follow along. But even with the update, you may not get any faster speeds. I bought my Inspire 3 weeks ago. Without the upgrade I was getting download and page load speeds that were about the same as the (heavily modded) Tilt 2 I traded up from. The software upgrade didn’t make a difference, for a couple of days. Still got mid-range HSPA. Average was about .5-1.5 Mb/sec, same as with the Tilt 2. Then, about 2 weeks ago, I noticed that web pages started loading wicked fast. Speed tests said I was getting 2-3 Mb, and even faster (up to 4 Mb), and the speeds seldom fell below 1 Mb. After a couple days of that, everything fell back to mid-range HSPA again, at best. Then I started seeing speeds below a half of a Mb more frequently. On my Tilt 2, I almost never saw speeds that low, and when I did, it was only for a few minutes at most. Now I was seeing test results in the 200-400 kilobit range about half the time — and a lot more often than I was seeing speeds at the higher end of the range, nearer to 2 Mb. So things were actually worse than when I started. So I called AT&T, and was told both by customer service and tech support that they were still rolling out the higher speeds in my area. They were pretty specific. They said it would be finished early last week. Whether they finished or not, I’m still waiting for the higher speeds. Occasionally I’ll get bursts of higher end performance — close to 2 Mb — but most of the time it’s back to the same speed ranges I got with my Tilt. I have noticed that I’m getting really slow-speeds less often, and for shorter periods. Right now, everything is exactly where it used to be with my Tilt. I suppose I should be happy that the service at least stopped getting worse. Same thing may be happening to you. Either they haven’t rolled it out, or are still rolling it out, or they screwed up the rollout where you live, or whatever. Good luck.
Verizon Palm Pre 2 gets its webOS 2.1 wings
June 25th, 2011
admin Good news for Palm Pre 2 owners of the Big Red variety, the endless breath-holding can finally stop — webOS 2.1 is finally making its way to your handset. Released back in March to the global unlocked masses, this update to HP’s platform brings along voice-dialing, email and security fixes, messaging backup (sorry, no MMS), and a Sense 3.0-like charging display that’ll float your photos, agenda, or simply keep the time. That should be enough to tide you over until the Pre 3 hits VZW’s stores, no? Die-hard Palm OS fanatics, chin up, your Classic emulator’s now only ten steps away .
