Microsoft, Facebook, RIM, and others write to the FCC in support of AT&T-Mobile merger

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has mail. It’s only a page and a paragraph long, but the letter he’s received this week has much gravitas attached to it, coming as it does from a select group of the tech industry’s biggest companies, all of whom are lending their support to AT&T’s proposed acquisition of T-Mobile . Of the eight new proponents of the deal, Microsoft, Facebook and Yahoo form a sub-group of software / web content distributors, whereas Qualcomm, RIM, Avaya, Brocade, and Oracle will have been motivated to speak up because they see the takeover as expanding opportunities to sell their mobile and networking hardware. The entire octet agrees that the melding of AT&T and T-Mobile’s networks into one is a requisite move for broadening mobile broadband availability in the US and for keeping the country competitive with the rest of the world. In their words, “an increasingly robust and efficient wireless network is part of a virtuous innovation cycle.” Virtuous for them, perhaps, but what about consumers faced with an increasingly binary choice of mobile carrier? Who shall protect their virtue? Microsoft, Facebook, RIM, and others write to the FCC in support of AT&T-Mobile merger originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 00:19:00 EST. Re: Unlocked HTC HD7

I bought HTC HD7 and I was able to unlock it through unlocking provider in Internet. So far everything seems working (including wifi access). But I haven’t  been able to connect Internet through ATT data plan, also unable to connect to my computer with USB cable (it charges, but can’t see the phone in my computer). My computer has Windows 7 OS. I   call their tech support of ATT. They told me They don’t know how to set up Internet access through their network or anything else since they don’t sell this phone. Can anyone help mehow to to  set it up so that I can resolve these two issues?

To Thwart Distracted Driving, US Government Considers Cell Phone …

I’m sure we have the tech to disable cell phones in the driver’s seat and not other seats. Just two or so very short range jammers would do the trick, one by the driver’s head and one in the seat or behind the steering wheel. …

Visa rolling out payWave mobile phone payments in NY subway and taxis

DeviceFidelity’s mobile twist on Visa’s payWave system is a nice little solution to the fact that nobody’s bothered to build contactless payment chips into US mobile phones just yet — DeviceFidelity just stuffs the Visa smart chip circuitry into a microSD card and lets you on your way. Of course, this supplants the much needed additional storage on an Android handset, and requires a chunky add-on case for the iPhone, but at least it’s a start. Visa will now start allowing those payWave-enabled devices to make contactless payments at subway turnstiles and taxi backseats in New York City as part of a new trial for the tech. Of course you’ve been able to do this with all sorts of chipped credit cards already, but there’s something very future-ey about swiping your phone to make a payment — now how about ditching the clunky add-ons and building some of this circuitry in by default?
