We don’t know if this device is ” super confidential ” or not, but we’ve just come across yet another Nokia N9 lookalike with a non-MeeGo operating system on board. Well, it looks that way, anyhow. There’s no way to verify that the Android homescreen we see above is a legitimate Gingerbread installation and not a mere screenshot (the resolution looks all wrong, for one thing), but the source of this image is the same Chinese fellow that posted a picture of Nokia’s Windows Phone prototype, the Sea Ray , way back in May, so we’re inclined to believe he’s got an inside line on these things. Additionally, the undersized Android UI elements on the screen actually encourage us to believe that this is indeed a Nokia testing device — if we were going to fake something like this, we’d use a regular screen grab for our tomfoolery — and Stephen Elop has openly admitted that Nokia spent a couple of wild seconds contemplating a switch to Android. Well, folks, here’s what that alternate future might have looked like. LG C729 Android phone for T-Mobile clears the FCC, packs a low-res display
June 17th, 2011
admin Oftentimes, when phones hit the FCC, they raise more questions than they answer. Case in point: the LG C729, a handset that just cleared the Commission, revealing little more than the fact that it will run on T-Mobile’s 1700MHz spectrum. Other than the cellular / PCS, GSM / GPRS / EDGE, and AWS WCDMA / HSPA connectivity, we know it has Bluetooth and WLAN radios. And that’s all you can squeeze out of the report, since LG asked the FCC to keep the test manual and any photos under wraps, as companies with their trade secrets are wont to do. But , as PocketNow reports, the user agent profile tells a fuller story, with nods to a some version of Android as the OS, and a low-resolution 320 x 480 display. So far, word on the street is that LG will launch two Android handsets on T-Mobile this fall, including the Maxx and the Maxx Q, which will have a QWERTY keyboard. So what say you, readers? Just what is this thing? LG C729 Android phone for T-Mobile clears the FCC, packs a low-res display originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 21:52:00 EST. Nokia’s Windows Phones will feature dual-core ST-Ericsson U8500, says STMicroelectronics chief
May 20th, 2011
jedwan As you’ll no doubt be aware, Qualcomm currently enjoys a stranglehold on processing hardware inside Windows Phone handsets . Its Snapdragon chip stars in both Microsoft’s original and updated chassis spec for the platform, but its hegemony may soon be coming to an end. STMicroelectronics (the ST in ST-Ericsson) boss Carlo Bozotti is cited by Forbes as saying that Nokia will use ST-Ericsson hardware to power at least some of its Windows Phones. The dual-core U8500 , a long-time Nokia favorite , is touted as the first such system-on-chip to appear, with its successors helping to populate Nokia’s expansive WP lineup in 2012. The only intel we’ve had so far on Nokia’s initial handsets for the new OS revolved around Qualcomm-based devices , so even if ST-Ericsson is indeed going to infiltrate the Windows Phone ecosystem, it doesn’t look likely to be among the very first Nokias out of the gate. Samsung Exhibit 4G coming to T-Mobile on June 8th?
May 17th, 2011
admin It wasn’t even two weeks ago that we first glimpsed the Samsung Exhibit 4G for T-Mobile in the wild (and spied its FCC footprint). Now it looks like this Gingerbread phone will go on sale June 8th — if this flyer sent in to TmoNews is to be believed. Still no word on pricing, though we know dealers will pay $325 a pop. To recap, a peek at the filing and unauthorized photos reveals the Exhibit 4G is an HSPA + handset running TouchWiz on top of Android 2.3, with front and rear-facing cameras, an LED flash in the back, and a microSD card slot. The site’s sources also suggest the phone will pack a 1GHz Hummingbird CPU and a 3 megapixel back camera, a departure from the speculation we were treated to earlier this month. In any case, it looks like T-Mobile will set the record straight in a matter of weeks. White iPhone 4 used to demo new multitasking, Spotlight search in ‘test version’ of iOS? (video)
April 19th, 2011
admin We’ve just laid eyes on a video from the prolific leaksters over at Tinhte , who claim they not only have a white iPhone 4 from Apple , but it’s one with a “test version” of iOS that nobody else has yet seen. It’s difficult to ascertain how legitimate this software is — it could just be a neatly done jailbreak mod — but that site has a track record of getting its hands on Apple gear ahead of the pack. With that said, the multitasking menu shown here substitutes the current use of apps’ icons to represent them with a visual of each app’s open window. You can tap on a window to expand it (replete with animation) to fill the screen or long-press on it to bring up the familiar “x” button for shutting it down. This is all accompanied by a new “Search iPhone” dialog at the very top, which sends you into Spotlight search that looks very much the way it currently does (though it seems to no longer be accessible with a left swipe from the first homescreen as on previous versions of iOS). Jump past the break for the video. Continue reading White iPhone 4 used to demo new multitasking, Spotlight search in ‘test version’ of iOS? Mobile broadband shocker: AT&T looking at tiered data pricing and speeds for upcoming LTE service
January 22nd, 2011
admin We all know AT&T just loves its tiered pricing models , so it’s no surprise to hear that the carrier intends to turn its forthcoming LTE service into a tier-vana of great new sophistication. BGR has come across an internal document detailing how AT&T plans to segment its 4G pricing on the basis of both speed and data allowance, meaning that your price will reflect both the amount of data you consume and the rate at which you gobble it down. To add further complexity flexibility, Top Ups will be available that’ll allow users to amp up their connection speed for a limited time or increase their allowance on a per-month basis. We’re hearing trials of this new offering will commence in May, which fits in neatly with the currently planned LTE rollout in the second half of this year . So it’s not all set in stone yet, but irrespective of the number of data options AT&T throws our way, the paramount question will always be the same: how much? Is Facebook working on a phone? (update: No.)
September 20th, 2010
jedwan A report from TechCrunch today claims that Facebook may be working on a phone of its own to compete in the ever-warming smartphone race. According to a “source who has knowledge of the project,” the social networking site has put two high level employees to the task of creating a smartphone which will allow deep integration with Facebook contacts. Apparently, says the source, Facebook has been concerned that Apple and Google represent some kind of threat as competitors, though there is rather deep Facebook integration in the Android platform, and even the iPhone app allows for contact merging. Additionally, the site speculates that the device could be targeted at the low end of the market ($50 or less), which would not place it as a direct competitor to anything but featurephones. The article goes as far to suggest that Facebook and Spotify investor Li Ka-Shing (who apparently had a hand in the Spotify featurephone with INQ ) may have started putting those efforts and relationships into the Facebook handset. But, INQ’s been down this road with Facebook already — take a look at the INQ1 . Still, TechCrunch says that Joe Hewitt and Matthew Papakipos are “secretly working on the project,” which is being kept tightly under wraps; even Facebook employees are in the dark about the plan. Hewitt and Papakipos have certainly both worked in this space: the former created the Facebook iPhone app, and the latter was head of Google’s Chrome OS team until June. But the article strangely leaves out what could be the most telling piece of the puzzle — the departure of Android’s lead project manager, Erick Tseng. After leaving the company in May , he went directly to Facebook to take on the job of head of mobile products. Keep in mind, Erick was high-up enough at Android to act as a spokesperson for the brand — even appearing on the Engadget Show to talk about the platform. But does this make for a Facebook Phone in our future? That’s not so clear — the idea that the company would see an opportunity in an already overcrowded smartphone marketplace is questionable, and if it’s truly worried about the major players, it wouldn’t be targeting a low end handset. We also may be giving the company a little too much credit to think that it can pull off being a heavy hitter in the social networking space (platform and all), and make a dent in the hardware and services game (remember, the competition is Microsoft, Apple, Google, RIM, and Nokia). Like all rumor and speculation in the gadget world, take it with a grain of salt, but you can be sure we’ll be putting our feelers out to get a concrete answer on this one. Update: Facebook wasted no time today shooting the idea down: “The story, which originated in Techcrunch, is not accurate,” a spokesperson told Mashable . “Facebook is not building a phone.” The company told the publication that it’s focusing on “deep integration” with existing mobile platforms, but that “building phones is just not what we do.” Is Facebook working on a phone? Droid 2 and Android 2.2 fated to be together from the start, according to latest leaks
July 21st, 2010
jedwan You know, some people get married with less information about their partner than we already have about the Droid 2 . Today, we have a pair of independent leaks seemingly confirming that the second coming of Moto’s QWERTY-sportin’ Doer will be running Android 2.2 right out of the gate. Droid Life has a tipster that’s apparently spent some quality time with the device, describing its keyboard as “phenomenal” and pointing out that it feels notably snappier than the original . The Froyo connection is reiterated by Phandroid ‘s sources, which provide images of Verizon’s device database indicating once again that Android 2.2 and Droid 2 will be an appropriately matched pair when the launch codes get entered (last mooted for August 12 ) and this thing finally hits retail. Another Palm exec is out… and CEO Jon Rubinstein is next?
April 24th, 2010
admin Things must be getting a little weird at Palm right now, as every day seems to add a new piece to an already confusing puzzle. In just two week’s time the company has gone from a potential free agent , to a lone wolf , and then back to prospective purchase . Adding more noise to the proceedings, TechCrunch is now reporting that another senior staffer has hit the road, and this time it’s Caitlin Spaan, Palm’s VP of carrier marketing. Her name gets added to what looks like a growing list of recent Palm departures (not to mention that entire marketing department we hear has been canned). More troubling than that news, however, is a rumor which also appears on TC suggesting that CEO (and putative savior of the company) Jon Rubinstein may be on his way out as well. This report is pure hearsay at this point, but if true would be a major admission on Palm’s part that its plans to kickstart the ailing company nearly two years ago are failing (or have just plain failed). Of course, we need to stress that this news just rumor at this stage — the company offered no comment to Business Insider — and until we get more solid word, it should be treated as such. As for us, we’re hoping the company can pull something salvageable together from this mess and figure out a way to compete at a level of increasingly more difficult stakes . Is this proof of a Verizon iPhone?
April 13th, 2010
jedwan According to a tip we’ve just received, Apple’s long-rumored, hotly-desired Verizon iPhone could turn out to be more than mere fantasy, though we warn you, this is nothing to start placing bets on. If you believe the above graphic — a snippet of data allegedly from the recently reliable Flurry Analytics — then at least a handful of non-AT&T phones are currently in play. The numbers show a polling of carriers a particular app is being tested on, and there’s no denying that Verizon is most certainly on that list… albeit in small numbers. Now obviously this is in no way conclusive evidence of anything, and you’ve got to allow for the possibility — however pathetic and slim — that someone is just Photoshopping this little infographic, but if it’s accurate, well… that’s something.
