Samsung drops counter suit against Apple — Apple’s still got a bone to pick

Back in April, Samsung slapped back at Apple’s claims of patent infringement with a healthy helping of ten claims of its own. Now Bloomberg is reporting that Samsung quietly dropped its counter suit against the Cupertino-based company on June 30th, in an attempt “to streamline the legal proceedings.” Of course that doesn’t mean the saga is over: Apple’s smartphone infringement accusations stand, as do legal battles in South Korea, Japan, Germany, and the UK Samsung says it will also continue to fight Apple’s accusations in the US in the form of a counter-claim. LG Optimus 2X scoops up Guinness World Record for being first dual-core smartphone

LG’s Optimus 2X just scooped up official recognition from the Guinness World Records crew for being the very first dual-core smartphone, which sounds like a good thing, but really it kind of isn’t. In its rabid pursuit of the “First!” badge, LG neglected to polish up the 2X’s software, leaving a lot of early users feeling high, dry, and in need of a good custom ROM. On the other hand, that very same phone’s US variant, the T-Mobile G2x that came a couple of months later, arrived with a nice and shiny stock Android build that really showed off the underlying hardware’s true capabilities. So yeah, kudos on another Record, LG, but next time let’s have less haste and more awesome, mmkay? How do you best 10 million 14 million in sales of your flagship Galaxy S smartphone? Easy, do what the movie studios do and launch a bigger-budget sequel to an even wider audience. Samsung is holding a media day event in South Korea to celebrate the domestic launch of its smokin’ fast Galaxy S II . The dual-core 1.2GHz Gingerbread handset with 4.27-inch 800 x 480 pixel Super AMOLED Plus display, TouchWiz 4.0 UI, MHL port , and 8 megapixel camera capable of 1080p video is already on limited sale in the UK on its way to a 120 country / 140 carrier invasion — that’s plus 10 countries over the initial Galaxy S target . Stay tuned to see if our very positive first impressions of this gorgeous 8.49-mm thick superphone carry over to the review which should be up later today. LG Optimus Big brings a 4.3-inch NOVA display and 1GHz dual-core to the superphone party

What’s big, mostly white, and set for a Korean launch tomorrow? That’s right, the LG Optimus Big! This 4.3-inch whopper, LG’s largest handset to date, touts a 1GHz dual-core processor, a slightly skinned Android 2.2 as its OS, HDMI output, a 5 megapixel camera, and 16GB of bult-in storage. That spec sheet sounds mighty close to the elder Optimus 2X that launched earlier in the year, though a couple of items have also been borrowed from the still unreleased Optimus Black . They are the NOVA display , which can crank all the way up to 700 nits of brightness, and WiFi Direct , which allows for wireless inter-device communication without the need for an intermediary WiFi access point. This big, delicious spec sandwich is hitting its home market on April 28th, but there’s sadly no word on when and where else it might show up. Just keep an eye out for it, shouldn’t be that hard to spot. Samsung Galaxy S II on pre-order in South Korea, introduces Olleh Touch for NFC payments

When Samsung teased us with those clever Galaxy S II commercials , we could feel the growing anticipation for its early UK arrival . Coincidentally, today marks an end to Britain’s exclusivity, with South Korea’s KT now offering the dual-core stunner for pre-order. We’ve learned this Korean Galaxy S II includes NFC, coinciding with the carrier’s roll-out of Olleh Touch, a payment system being implemented at local grocer Lotte Mart. Sure, NFC inclusion increases the phone’s thickness to 8.9mm, but if parlor tricks are your thing, we’d imagine it’ll still easily pass under doorways. LG Optimus 2X goes on sale in Korea, teases white version for February

No big surprises here, unless you count that snowy white number up above. Yep, LG’s not only stolen a march on Motorola in introducing the world’s first dual-core smartphone , it’s also about to beat Apple to the white handset punch as well. The 1080p-recording , Tegra 2 -wielding Optimus 2X is now available in its home market of South Korea and, if LG stays true to its roadmap, should be filtering through into Europe before this month is out. We don’t know if its white variant will ever escape the clutches of Korea (and we sure hope it does), but it should be making its bodacious debut over there in February.
