Google+ for Android app (hands-on)

Given the number of apps Google’s made available for smartphones, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that it’s taken its suite of social networking services direct to the mobile world as well. As soon as Google+ was officially announced , an app was ready for download in the Android Market and a web app became available for Safari for iOS (with its full offering to the App Store coming soon). As usual, we couldn’t resist the urge to play around with it , but how does the mobile iteration fare against the competition? Continue past the break to get a peek of the larger-than-life service squeezed into a 4.3-inch (or smaller) display. Acer Liquid Mini intros four new flavors, each tastes like Gingerbread

Subtle variation is the name of the game with Acer’s redesigned Liquid Mini smartphone. Traditionally styled with blue, pink, silver, black and green enclosures, the company is re-introducing the handset with colors named lagoon, cherry, pearl and steel. It’s not just the outside that’s getting a makeover, either. Inside, users will be treated to Android 2.3 alongside version 4.2 of Acer’s customized interface which features widgets on the home screen and a repositioned status bar that’s said to no longer interfere with your typing. Finally, the Taiwan company is including a freshly minted SocialJogger 2.0, which combines Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and Plurk — we hear the last one is popular in the manufacturer’s home country. The specs Acer provided suggest its RAM was reduced to 256MB , but other components remain the same — including a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor, 5 megapixel camera and DLNA capability . Pricing hasn’t been established, though you’ll (hopefully) find it for next to nothing on contract. Find a full press release after the break, including this doozy: “Liquidmini the best in fresh, fun and alluring design!” Continue reading Acer Liquid Mini intros four new flavors, each tastes like Gingerbread Acer Liquid Mini intros four new flavors, each tastes like Gingerbread originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 02 Jun 2011 14:30:00 EST. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, Arc getting Android 2.3.4 update next week, Facebook integration in tow

There’s still no confirmation as to when it will be headed to the soon-to-be-released Verizon Xperia Play , but Recombu is reporting that at least some iterations of the phone will be getting upgraded to Android 2.3.4 next week, at which point the Xperia Arc will also get bumped up to the same version. Assuming there’s no surprises in the next week, that would seem to make them the first non-Nexus phones to get the update. What’s more, in addition to various Android-related updates, both phones will also be getting Sony Ericsson’s so-called “Facebook inside Xperia” update, which promises to more deeply integrate your phone (including your calendar, contacts, and even music) with the social network. The company’s also confirmed that the Facebook integration will be included on all future Xperia phones, and it will be headed to all Xperia models released so far this year. Motorola’s SocialTV app will turn your Xoom or Atrix into a communicative couch companion

Whether you look at stats or your own limitless experience, you know very well that humanity spends too much time staring at tubes, screens, and other unnatural visualizers . Motorola isn’t really here to fix that ailment, but at least it’s converging the uses of some of those device classes with its introduction of a SocialTV Companion Service. Designed to turn your smartphone, tablet or laptop into a, you guessed it, TV companion device, this new software serves up social networking, complimentary content, real-time chat, TV show ratings, and interactive (as opposed to what, non-interactive?) games. Basically, since you spend your TV-watching time idly browsing away on your Xoom anyway, why not fuse the two things together and “generate some incremental revenue” for your service provider in the process? We presume the new SocialTV stuff will be rolled out in app form, Moto doesn’t dish up those details or give us a launch date. If only we had an app to tell us when to expect new apps to arrive.
