Towards the end of our recent trip to Taiwan for Computex , just as the hustle and bustle was winding down and we’d settled on a bit of sightseeing, we stumbled upon a rare beast — a smartphone unicorn of sorts — the Sharp Aquos SH-12C . This 3D-capable Android handset for NTT’s Docomo network was imported from its native Japan by a Hong Kong resident who was also attending the epic trade show. Like the HTC EVO 3D , this device features twin cameras and a glasses-free stereoscopic qHD display, so we decided to combine work and play by getting some hands-on time with this mysterious phone right on the observation deck of Taipei 101. Take a look a our gallery below — complete with foggy views from the 89th floor at dusk — and hit the break for our hands-on video, first impressions and some camera samples. Blackberry Bold 9900 coming to Three UK in August
June 17th, 2011
admin We got the lowdown last month on the Blackberry Bold 9900: 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 640 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, and looks that say “it’s business time.” Back then RIM said we could snag a svelte new Bold sometime this summer. Then came word that the handset wouldn’t be available until September . Now, Three UK has put the Bold 9900 up on its “Coming Soon” page and indicated it’s set for an August debut. Whew, we’re glad that’s settled, but there’s one more thing we’d like to know — how much is it going to cost? Samsung Galaxy S Plus trekking to Netherlands, coming ‘soon’ for €449
June 9th, 2011
jedwan Samsung’s venerable Galaxy S lineup may appear a bit sedate in comparison to the Galaxy S II , but that doesn’t mean the company is allowing its former champion to collect dust. As you recall, the 2011 Edition began sprouting along Russia’s shores with an upgraded 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255T chip, 14.4Mbps HSPA+ radio and 1650mAh battery — along with news it would be marketed as the Galaxy S Plus outside of The Federation. True to Sammy’s word, the phone is now trekking across Eurasia, where it hopes to join the bicyclers of Holland as they dodge tourists and await net neutrality legislation. Absent any carrier commitments, this 2011 refresh will retail for €449, which could be tempting — unless you’re already pocketing a Galaxy S II, that is. Google’s translation of the Dutch PR suggests a launch that’s coming “soon,” and you’re invited to hop the break for some linguistic giggles. The Sony Ericsson Urushi leaks again: ST18i exposed
June 7th, 2011
jedwan Remember that Sony Ericsson that leaked awhile back, the ST18i ? Well, here’s the Urushi again, all fired up and ready for a few holes of Lets Golf 2 . Inside is a 1GHz ARM processor with an Adreno 205 GPU which, if you’re on top of your SOCs you’d know, means there’s a single-core Snapdragon under the hood. It appears Sony put a meager 335MB of RAM on board — enough for basic use, but it’ll probably get bogged down under heavy multitasking. We can also confirm that this little guy is pushing Gingerbread, with the expected load of customizations, to its 854 x 480, 3.2-inch screen. Hit up the source link for a healthy dose of picage. Qualcomm ships one billion BREWs, Verizon thirsty for more
June 4th, 2011
jedwan Qualcomm isn’t finished with the dumbphone just yet. Even after announcing that 250 handsets with Snapdragon cores are in the pipeline, CEO Paul Jacobs slapped his Uplinq 2011 audience with a stunner: over one billion BREW-enabled devices have been shipped. For its part, Qualcomm is continuing to stoke BREW’s flames, and Verizon seems perfectly willing to stay aboard. The carrier will introduce several BREW MP devices over the coming months, and the majority of these phones will feature a new storefront for mobile purchases — oh joy. In addition to getting recommendations, shoppers will be able to test drive many applications before making purchases. This is all well and good, but we’d prefer Jacobs had previewed some of those new Snapdragons . Follow the break for a joint PR from Qualcomm and Verizon. Nokia’s Windows Phones will feature dual-core ST-Ericsson U8500, says STMicroelectronics chief
May 20th, 2011
jedwan As you’ll no doubt be aware, Qualcomm currently enjoys a stranglehold on processing hardware inside Windows Phone handsets . Its Snapdragon chip stars in both Microsoft’s original and updated chassis spec for the platform, but its hegemony may soon be coming to an end. STMicroelectronics (the ST in ST-Ericsson) boss Carlo Bozotti is cited by Forbes as saying that Nokia will use ST-Ericsson hardware to power at least some of its Windows Phones. The dual-core U8500 , a long-time Nokia favorite , is touted as the first such system-on-chip to appear, with its successors helping to populate Nokia’s expansive WP lineup in 2012. The only intel we’ve had so far on Nokia’s initial handsets for the new OS revolved around Qualcomm-based devices , so even if ST-Ericsson is indeed going to infiltrate the Windows Phone ecosystem, it doesn’t look likely to be among the very first Nokias out of the gate. Unannounced Samsung ‘Hercules’ headed to T-Mobile, bearing demigod-like specs?
May 18th, 2011
jedwan The Samsung Infuse 4G is a beautiful 4.5-inch tabletphone, but it’s not for the spec junkies of the world — a single-core processor and Android 2.2 just don’t impress such folk these days, regardless of actual performance . However, This is my next reports Samsung’s cooking up a $350 handset that ticks all the boxes on the superphone list — a beast of a smartphone it’s tentatively calling the “Hercules.” Mind you, we’re still in rumor territory, but feast your inner speed demon on the possibility of these: a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8060 processor (the same as the HP TouchPad ), a 42Mbps HSDPA radio , 1GB of RAM, 16GB of flash storage and Android 2.3, along with the same 4.5-inch 800 x 480 Super AMOLED Plus display as the aforementioned Infuse 4G. The same whispers say it’ll have a 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video capture, MHL support and NFC , and should play for T-Mobile… assuming the buyout doesn’t succeed. Our existing smartphones are already preparing to seethe with jealousy.
