Apple granted patent for ‘portable multifunction devices’ with multitouch screens

Avid watchers of tech know that Apple is almost as good at requesting patents (though, its record of defending them is somewhat less impressive ) as it is at actually creating compelling products. Three years after initially filing for the design of a “portable multifunction device” with a multitouch interface, the USPTO has awarded the Cupertino crew a patent that’s sure to raise few eyebrows amongst its competitors. At a glance, the language seems to cover practically any device that allows touch input to control content in a frame on a webpage independent of controlling the rest of the page — which we’re sure Jobs and co. are excited to add to their growing stockpile of claims to gestures and capacitive displays . Of course, a rival would have to infringe on all elements of a patent’s independent claims before it’d need to fear the courtroom, so it’s probably best not to get too hot and bothered here. For those looking to pore over the specifics, that source link is a good place to head. US Cellular teases 2H 2011 smartphone lineup, brings WP7 and tablets into fold

It’s a treat when we get a sneak peek at upcoming devices, but we consider it a feast when carriers unload their entire roadmap en masse. US Cellular indulged us with its smartphone lineup for the entire second half of the year, and we have to say — your choices this holiday season are looking mighty fine. It’s lengthy, so you’d better grab a cup o’ Joe before proceeding. Starting off the laundry list, the carrier announced it’s launching its first Windows Phone in an HTC flavor sometime this summer. Of the seven Android handsets coming to market this fall, a whole 100 percent of them will run Gingerbread: one is a Motorola dual-core 1GHz phone with 4.3-inch screen, another is an LG with “ultra-bright LCD display” ( Nova ?), and Samsung and Huawei will offer entry-level phones. Throw in a couple HTC models and there’s just one still unaccounted for — the company’s first LTE-enabled smartphone, slated for release in November. Now top it all off with an HTC 7-inch slate alongside another mystery tablet, and you have a plethora of choices come time for Black Friday. Mind = blown? Scroll past the break for a press release that might put it back together into one piece again. HTC Sensation 4G selling entirely too early at some Walmart stores

Remember HTC’s announcement that Walmart would receive a three-day exclusivity in advance of the Sensation 4G’s “official” June 15th arrival at T-Mobile? Apparently the head start wasn’t sufficient for Wally World, as many associates are now passing this hot little number across the counter without batting an eye. While some employees appear to have gotten the June 12th memo, the point is moot because Walmart’s point-of-sale computers are more than willing to process the sales. So, if you’re able to track down an unknowing (or empowered) sales clerk, those HSPA+ dreams might come true sooner than expected — for the low price of $148.88. Now, who’s up for some Walmart Bingo? Android Market web store now checks which apps are compatible with your devices

Google has already made some tough moves to tackle fragmentation, but it’s clearly still wary of the problem. It’s just tweaked the Android Market web store to show users which apps are compatible with which of their gadgets. Of course, compatibility screening was already in place for users who accessed the Market from within their device, but this update should still be of use to those who surf the web store, especially if they’re rocking multiple handsets or a phone-plus-tablet combo. Samsung Indulge moseys to Cricket, $330 price ensures it won’t leave your sight

Not to be outdone by MetroPCS , Cricket now offers a Samsung Indulge for its customers who demand a taste of Android’s better half. While the $330 price is sure to test the commitment of some, the device stands out among its underpowered Huawei, Sanyo and LG peers — it’s also the only game in Crickettown if you want to combine El Goog’s OS with a physical keyboard. Like its MetroPCS counterpart, customers will find a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, a 3.5-inch HVGA LCD display and a 3 megapixel camera — although unlike the former, Cricket doesn’t yet offer LTE service. Taking into consideration this is a zero-commitment affair where $55 a month brings unlimited voice, text and data, it’s not a bad proposition — though, your heart is likely to race if the phone gets dropped. So, if you think you can hold onto this Froyo-filled Sammy, follow the break for the PR. Nokia: iDoalotmore talking about Symbian than a zombie OS deserves

When you’ve got an OS in the final throes of life , your choices for stimulating interest are a little limited. Having exhausted the usual avenues of introducing pink and gold-plated versions of its older phones, Nokia is now resorting to the mobile industry’s standby marketing crutch: poking fun at Apple. Its latest ad campaign in India features the tagline iDoalotmore, which takes a rather overt shot at Apple’s iPhone and general tendency to preface its wares with an “i.” Sadly, there are no spec-for-spec smackdowns over on the accompanying promo site, but you can learn all about Symbian’s excellent features and radically new rounded icons . Or are they iCons now?
