Skype 2.0 hotfix enables video chat on Sprint’s Nexus S 4G

Looks like some of the Skype crew might’ve had a sleepless night to please owners of the Nexus S 4G . If you’ll recall, June 30th saw a major update to its Android app enabling video chat on four devices; although the Nexus S was part of the club, its door was locked for Sprint’s 4G variant. That’s quickly changed, however, as the team’s set loose a hotfix to grant it access — this despite initially stating we’d have to wait for a “future release .” You can grab the app from the Android Market if you haven’t yet, and be sure to let us know how it goes in comments. Oh, and for those anxious Thunderbolt owners? We’d recommend not holding your breath until after the 4th of July holiday. Skype 2 video chat unofficially enabled on the Galaxy S II, Sensation, and others

The latest Skype update for Android is available to everyone, but it only enables video chat on four specific handsets . Fortunately, impatient modders have gone some way to correcting this profound injustice, by creating APKs that activate video calling on other handsets too. So far we’ve heard of successful ports on the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt and EVO 4G. If you’ve got some other handset with Android 2.3, a little experimentation with the APK might also be worth your while. However, we just tried it on an Xperia Arc and didn’t get very far: the app ran, but efforts to communicate with an Xperia Neo resulted in one-way video, a locked landscape mode and plenty of awkwardness. Let us know if you fare better — you’ll find a Thunderbolt-specific download at the DroidLife source link, and a more general APK at TechPetals . Skype 2.0 brings two-way video calling to Nexus S, Desire S, Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro

The latest update to Skype’s Android application has just been rolled out and a big part of its goodie delivery is two-way video calling. Only a quartet of phones are supported right now: Google’s own Nexus S, HTC’s Desire S, and the Xperia Neo and Pro from Sony Ericsson, all handsets that shipped with Android 2.3 installed. We suspect the rest of the Android world won’t be far behind — Thunderbolt users will surely be wondering why they’re not included in this first batch — but for now it’s just that fearsome foursome. Also included in Skype v2.0.0.45 is a UI overhaul and support for SMS messaging, neither of which suffers from any handset restrictions. Hit up the Android Market on your phone (the web Market still lists version 1) to get at the latest software. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Update: We’ve just spent a little quality time with Skype 2.0 and its newfangled video calling. Notably, we couldn’t get a video call to work between the Xperia Neo and a desktop version of Skype — it was only possible to get video when calling between the Neo and the similarly compatible HTC Desire S. Once we did establish a connection, though, frame rates were smooth and buttery and the UI is simple and unintrusive yet offers quite a few functions. You can mute the call, choose between the front- or rear-facing camera, reposition the small window that shows your video feed anywhere on the screen, or — with a double tap upon that window — switch focus so that your own video output dominates the screen and your buddy’s feed is relocated to the smaller preview. It’s a great looking implementation of video calling, though we did only test it over WiFi, 3G performance may be materially worse. Update 2: Skype’s press release and demo video can now be found after the break. Dutch net neutrality first in EU, mobile operators side-eye KPN

KPN may have shot itself in the foot, but the Dutch parliament certainly helped pull the trigger. Following a very public brag earlier this year that the operator was using deep packet inspection to throttle service and charge users for unintended network usage comes a massive industry buzz kill in the form of mobile net neutrality legislation. Pending approval by the Senate, wireless network operators in the Netherlands will no longer be able to shiv customers for using that nifty rival messaging, or VoIP service of their choice — Skype and Whatsapp , for starters. The country’s telcos put on their lobbying best to whine the usual lines about higher consumer prices, and shaky quality assurance, but the Dutch government called that bluff. Though the ruling bans traffic discrimination, it doesn’t preclude tricksier tiered data pricing — sneaky little carriers. While this win is a first for Europe , OG credit goes to Chile for paving the way . Not yet banned in the Netherlands? Amazing airports, tulips, and cheese wheels. webOS Skype integration revealed in screenshots

We know you’ve all been losing sleep, wondering what exactly Skype integration on webOS will look like. Well, tonight, you should sleep like a baby, knowing you’ve gotten a solid peak at how the Pre 3 will hande the VoIP service. Similar to Google Voice on Android, you’ll be able to either route all international calls through Skype or force is to ask every time you press that precious dial button. We also know that it will be able to handle video calls and, at least on the O2 network in Germany, both voice and video chat will be available over WiFi and 3G. You’ll also be able to initiate sessions from either contacts or the messaging menu, so there’s no need to fire up a separate app. Now, we just need HP to get this out the door and for Microsoft to work out those reliability kinks . Check out the source link for the full-sized images. webOS Skype integration revealed in screenshots originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 19 Jun 2011 19:20:00 EST. Telus gets cozy with Skype, announces Optimus Black ‘Skype edition’ for summer release

Telus is looking to attract Skype’s Canadian constituency by positioning itself as the nation’s first carrier to easily enable the VoIP habit — an addiction we’re quite fond of, in fact. In a partnership with Microsoft’s latest acquisition , Telus will allow its customers to purchase Skype credits directly from their wireless accounts — meaning credit cards won’t be necessary to call mates in distant locales. For newbies, the provider is announcing a “Skype edition” of the LG Optimus Black , featuring a shortcut to download the app (rather than pre-installing it ), and a $2 credit for up to 60 minutes of international calls. If you’re thinking a single toonie is a bit meager, we’re suspecting Mr. Ballmer was glad to save coin anywhere he could — after dropping $8.5 billion , that is. The specially-branded phone is set for a summer release and there’s no hint at pricing, but if you get your jollies from reading press releases, just follow the break for the reveal.
