No thanks to Windows Mobile 6.5, the HTC HD2 is managing to keep spry as it’s approaching retirement. Rather than relegating itself to playing shuffleboard with the codgers , it’s been dancing to the tunes of Windows Phone , Android and Meego . Now the HD2 is learning NoDo’s moves, and from the looks of its demo video, the phone is quite a performer — take a peek after the break. Of course, this wouldn’t be possible without a jolt from the WaterBear development team, which bundles the 7392 security update , an HD7 registry key and some language fixes. If this is new territory for your HD2, it’ll require a little assistance from HardSPL (for unlocking), MAGLDR (the bootloader), and the proper radio file, but it seems like a worthwhile pursuit. After all, there’s no sense in keeping this handset cooped up in the old folks home — it’s bound to rile up the nurses. Samsung shows affection to CyanogenMod, gives its devs a free Galaxy S II
June 8th, 2011
jedwan Let’s see if we’re grokking this: Samsung is not only telling the dev community it’s okay to place custom ROMs on its flagship device, it’s actually encouraging the practice by handing out free phones? Atinm, the developer responsible for prepping CyanogenMod on the Captivate and Vibrant, took to Twitter to praise the manufacturer for sending him a free Galaxy S II. From the looks of it, Samsung sent the phone to a select number of devs intent on building an official release of CM7 for the GSII. Unlocking bootloaders has already become the new fancy with manufacturers like HTC , Motorola , and Sony Ericsson jumping on the bandwagon, but this is the first time we’ve heard of a company doling out free devices to the custom ROM community. Does this mean that, instead of enforcing TouchWiz with an iron fist, Samsung is looking at how this practice could actually benefit consumers? We doubt this will be the case for all of the company’s future Android phones, but wouldn’t you love to live in a world where it was? HTC’s Kingdom destined for Sprint, now with less blurrycam and more juicy details
May 5th, 2011
jedwan When 911Sniper outed the HTC Kingdom , we noted the absence of its accompanying ROM file with subtle curiosity. True to its reputation, the Chinese leakster now delivers the crown jewel, revealing many exciting tidbits about this 4-inch device — most importantly that it’s coming to Sprint. Like the upcoming EVO 3D , the phone features a qHD display (sans the extra dimension), and similar to the EVO Shift 4G , it’s based on Qualcomm’s MSM7630 chipset, with the same Adreno 205 graphics engine and an upgraded 1.2GHz single-core processor. You’ll find dual cameras on this handset, with a 5 megapixel primary shooter that records video at 720p, and a 1.3 megapixel secondary lens for self-portraits. The phone supports 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and WiMAX, and is also reported to receive and transmit FM radio — for when you’re really in an auditory pinch, of course. Re: HTC Inspire no 4G upload – never!
April 29th, 2011
admin Their networks are “capable”. My Inspire is rooted, with a cooked ROM, and I have no problem averaging 4-5 Mbs down and 1.3 up. Now, whether its capable with everyone using the network, that’s another story. I have no idea if I’m running on HSPA+, or just HSPA. Im guessing HSPA, since HSPA+ hasn’t been activated in my area AFAIK.
Motorola promises unlocked bootloaders for future Android phones? (update)
April 27th, 2011
jedwan Android users have spoken , and maybe, just maybe, Motorola actually heard — AusDroid claims to have a statement direct from the mobile phone manufacturer promising unlocked bootloaders later this year: We completely understand the operator requirement for security to the end user, and as well, want to support the developer communities desire to use these products as a development platform. It is our intention to enable the unlockable/relockable bootloader currently found on Motorola XOOM across our portfolio of devices starting in late 2011, where carriers and operators will allow it. Wonderfully corporate of them to pass the buck to the carriers, no? This quote comes by way of a gentleman who petitioned Moto for just such a thing, mind you, so please take it with a grain of salt, and you’ll be the first to know if we get confirmation from Motorola itself. Update: AusDroid managed to get in touch with Motorola North Asia, and it sounds like we’re looking at the truth — let’s see if Sanjay Jha agrees when he wakes up tomorrow morning. Motorola ready to make sweet love to Android ROM devs and rooters?
January 22nd, 2011
jedwan HTC is legendary for its tacit support of the Android ROM cooking community. Motorola… not so much, thanks in large part to the company’s policy of locking down the bootloader as a means to prevent unapproved software from running on its Droid handsets. An annoyance recently exacerbated by a moderator of Moto’s YouTube channel who suggested that customers looking to install custom ROMs should “buy elsewhere.” Ouch. The resulting public relations kerfuffle then prompted Motorola to publish a clarification to its bootloader policy on Facebook: We apologize for the feedback we provided regarding our bootloader policy. The response does not reflect the views of Motorola. We are working closely with our partners to offer a bootloader solution that will enable developers to use our devices as a development platform while still protecting our users’ interests. More detailed information will follow as we get closer to availability. Obviously, we’ll have wait for said details to get official before calling this a shift in strategy. It’s certainly an improvement over Moto’s previous approach of lawyering-up with cease and desist orders . Perhaps Motorola is taking a cue from Microsoft who seems to have recently discovered that it’s better to embrace than to annoy a motivated hacking community — customers who tend to be a company’s most dedicated fans and evangelists.
