General RF question and GPRS (G display on phone)
October 31st, 2010
jedwan Hi, a couple general questions. In my reading concerning GSM, are my conclusions correct that – When I use my LG C2000 phone using 2G GSM service that when I update an option on the phone that requires communication with the network or for example when I receive an SMS message, I hear interference on an active land-line phone call and also through my laptop speaker. Is this because 2G GSM RF has the downfall of interference with amplifiers and it is interfering with the amplifiers in my land-line telephone and with the amplifier for the speaker in my laptop? Does this problem go away with a 3G service (using UMTS or CDMA2000) for example with my wife’s Iphone? We haven’t experimented yet enough with this. – So the G on my display next to the signal strength indicates GPRS service is available. This is used for accessing the internet and SMS service? I see that when my phone settings are set to connect only to GPRS when needed that the G appears when I try and access the internet. However I don’t see the G when I send or receive an SMS message. Is this because the designers said the interval is so short to not bother placing a G on the screen momentarily only to disengage the service a moment later? – If I don’t see a G on my phone (instead I see just the icon of the cell tower) that means I won’t be able to send an SMS message or access the internet during that time with my cell phone? Thanks much!
