HTC Sensation 4G hitting mid-June for $200?
May 16th, 2011
admin Oh, the sweet smells of summer: surf, sunscreen, barbecue, Gingerbread. We’ve known all along that HTC’s Android 2.3-packing smartphone was set for release at the “beginning of the summer,” and thanks to some loud-mouthed Google AdWords , we’ve seen June 8th floated as a possibility. Those who understandably doubt the word of search-based text advertisements, take heart: it’s shaping up to be a big weekend for Sensation 4G leaks. First TmoNews got its hands on a Target placard pricing the snappy dual-core Snapdragon handset at $199.99, for what appears to be a June 12th release, and then the site snagged a shot of internal T-Mobile documentation that confirms the earlier June 8th date. Why the discrepancy? Well, it certainly wouldn’t be unheard of for the carrier to give itself a head start, and surely Target wouldn’t mind timing its own release up with its Sunday circulars. In both cases, it looks like the phone’ll be spending a fair amount of time beneath beach umbrellas. AT&T jacking some no-contract smartphone prices to keep pace with new early upgrade fee
October 20th, 2010
admin If you thought that the newly-increased $200 early upgrade fee for existing AT&T customers looking to re-up their handsets was painful enough, turns out the company seems to have swept another price increase under the rug at the same time. In the latest in-store displays valid for the period ending November 6, a bunch of smartphones are showing no-commitment (that is, no-contract) pricing anywhere from $100 to $150 higher than they were previously. Why? To make sure that the early upgrade price is still less than (or equal to) the no-commitment price, since it wouldn’t make any sense to charge a current subscriber more for hardware without a contract than it would a new one. Here are some examples: Palm Pre Plus : $299.99 before, $399.99 now HTC Aria : $329.99 before, $429.99 now Sony Ericsson Vivaz : $279.99 before, $429.99 now Palm Pixi Plus : $229.99 before, $379.99 now Motorola Backflip : $249.99 before, $349.99 now Some pricing remains unchanged — the Samsung Captivate , for instance, which is still $499.99 — but that’s simply because the new line price plus the early upgrade fee are still well less than that rather hefty sum. At any rate, it’s a bummer that AT&T is penalizing people who just want to buy a phone without signing up for a contract here… and it’s pretty hilarious to see ancient hardware like the Backflip go up by a hundred bucks this late in the game. T-Mobile G2 priced at $199 with contract, $499 without, by latest leak
September 2nd, 2010
jedwan Been wondering how much T-Mobile’s first HSPA+ phone will set you back? Why, it’s that most generic of all smartphone prices: $199 with a two-year commitment or $499 without. To be fair to T-Mo, the G2 was one phone that it could plausibly have upmarked to, say $249, as Sprint has done with the Epic 4G , but nope, it’s landing squarely in the middle of the well beaten path to smartphone sales. There is the dreaded specter of a $50 mail-in rebate to deal with, but we doubt it’ll be enough to dampen anticipation for what’s looking like the next great Android slider phone.
