Just got a Palm phone? The best apps, accessories, and tips
January 1st, 2011
admin So you nabbed a webOS device over the holidays? Maybe you got yourself a Pixi or Pre Plus , or if you were really lucky, someone dropped a Pre 2 in your stocking. We know that Palm isn’t exactly ruling the roost when it comes to smartphones, but that doesn’t mean that your new device isn’t plenty powerful given the right apps and proper tweaks. In fact, webOS can stand toe-to-toe with the iOS and Android devices of the world, even if the selection of apps and hardware leaves something to be desired. So how do you turn your holiday cheer into a year-round workhorse? Read on after the break for the must-have apps, accessories, and more! Continue reading Just got a Palm phone? HP contracts 5 or 6 new Palm devices for 2011?
October 28th, 2010
jedwan Underwhelmed by the feeling of sameness with the Pre 2 ? Well, you may or may not be in luck; Chinese-based CENS.com is reporting that manufacturers Foxconn and Compal now have contracts to manufacturer up to six new Palm devices for 2011. That boils down to one for Compal, and either four or five for Foxconn. We’d venture a guess that PalmPad’s at least one of those, seeing as it’s due early next year, but what about the others? Whatever (stackable) cards HP / Palm have in hand aren’t exactly being laid out, and while we can’t confirm this report ourselves, rest assured, we’re hoping really hard that there’ll be more webOS options with non-pebble form factors. Palm Pre 2 coming to Verizon?
October 15th, 2010
admin It seems like we’re getting closer and closer to the arrival of the Palm Pre 2 and webOS 2.0 , and it looks like Verizon will be in the mix — we were just sent this image of Big Red’s internal VZLearn portal showing Pre 2 device training. We still don’t know when it’ll actually hit or what pricing will be like, and we don’t know if it’ll hit Sprint and AT&T as well like the OG Pre, but we’re guessing we’ll find out soon enough — keep a sharp eye, we’ll let you know. PS3 jailbreak adapted to Nokia N900, Palm Pre in wake of Australian ban (video)
September 6th, 2010
admin Two weeks ago you’d have to pay an Australian importer for a specialized USB key . Four days ago open-source software let you roll your own . Today, there’s no need for any of that — you can hack your PS3 with a tethered smartphone. Working closely with the PSGroove team, hacker Kakaroto adapted the same jailbreak to the Nokia N900, and the open-source community lost no time porting it to the Palm Pre as well. If the videos after the break are any indication, both versions work just as well as the original, and you too can get your game on with downloads and detailed instructions at the source links below. Sadly, the aforementioned Australian importer OzModChips is a casualty of this little story, with all its shipments of the PS Jailbreak dongle seized (and the item subject to injunction) by an Australian court, but we suppose knowing its product has enabled the hardware hacking community thus might somewhat soften the blow. Palm Pre Plus launched on AT&T
May 17th, 2010
jedwan The boardroom drama behind the HP acquisition wasn’t the only Palm news today — the company also launched the AT&T Palm Pre Plus . No surprises here — it’s going to $149, decidedly more than Verizon’s $29 with free Mobile Hotspot service — but hey, at least it’s out there, and you get a free Touchstone in the deal, so that’s nice. Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus could be coming to Europe by the end of this month
April 11th, 2010
admin Time to get those speculative juices flowing again. Pre Central have unearthed the above O2 Germany promotional poster displaying a Palm Pixi stood in front of such smartphone luminaries as Sony Ericsson’s X10 and Motorola’s Milestone. Given that the Pixi has yet to make the hop over the Atlantic, their supposition is that we’re looking at its Plus variant and that this early flier is indicative of a soon-ish release for the Euro-bound Plus devices from Palm. Can we be any more specific than that? Why yes we can, thanks to Laurent Guyot, a French PR chap, who indicates an April 27th launch date for the Pre and Pixi Plus on the SFR network. Put as much trust into this info as you feel appropriate, though it does look like a resoundingly logical time to get these handsets out into eager European hands. [Thanks, Garth] Continue reading Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus could be coming to Europe by the end of this month Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus could be coming to Europe by the end of this month originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 03:33:00 EST. Palm’s Jon Rubinstein: ‘I think we have a better product than Droid’
April 10th, 2010
jedwan It’s been a rough month or so for Palm, as the only thing keeping the company’s tanking stock price from falling completely into the gutter are buyout rumors — RIM here, HTC there, even Lenovo, for some crazy reason. But that’s apparently not enough to get CEO Jon Rubinstein down: he just sat down with Fortune for a remarkably candid chat, saying that although his company hasn’t done so well, he still thinks there’s potential — and that he obviously wishes some things had gone better. The big one? The Verizon launch — and Jon thinks that if the Droid and Pre had had their launch dates flipped, the Pre would have done better. One of the analysts on our earnings call asked if we had launched when Droid launched, and Droid launched when [we] launched at Verizon, would the story have been opposite? I said I think we have a better product than Droid, and customers would have been happier with it. It’s certainly an interesting thought experiment, but we’ve always said that the Pre’s marketing had a lot to do with its failure on Big Red as well — and Palm apparently agrees, since it’s fired its ad agency and Jon told Fortune that Verizon’s changing their ads as well. As for the buyout rumors? Well, obviously Jon didn’t say much, but it sounds like he’s not too interested — although that can always change if the right suitor comes to the table . We’ll see if Ruby actually manages to turn things around — we’ve got some ideas on how to make that happen . Hit the source link for the full interview.
