Looks like some of the Skype crew might’ve had a sleepless night to please owners of the Nexus S 4G . If you’ll recall, June 30th saw a major update to its Android app enabling video chat on four devices; although the Nexus S was part of the club, its door was locked for Sprint’s 4G variant. That’s quickly changed, however, as the team’s set loose a hotfix to grant it access — this despite initially stating we’d have to wait for a “future release .” You can grab the app from the Android Market if you haven’t yet, and be sure to let us know how it goes in comments. Oh, and for those anxious Thunderbolt owners? We’d recommend not holding your breath until after the 4th of July holiday. Google Talk video chat finally available over T-Mobile 3G and 4G (video)
June 29th, 2011
admin Remember how excited we all were when we found out that Android 2.3.4 would bring video chat to Google Talk on the Nexus S? Only to have our hopes and dreams smashed when we discover that it didn’t work over 3G on T-Mobile. Well, it seems the carrier has quietly flipped a switch, and now all you Nexus owners can GChat face-to-face over HSPA+. Surely this an historic day, one that will go down in the annals of mobile history — or, you know, at least one that deserves an exasperated ” finally! ” Check out the video proof after the break. Nexus One gets Android 2.3.4 over the air, but no Gtalk video calling fun
May 3rd, 2011
admin Good news: Android 2.3.4 is en route to your Nexus One. Bad news: it lacks the Google Talk video and voice chat options that Nexus S users will get to enjoy in their slice of the same Gingerbread iteration. You might think this predictable, given that the Nexus One lacks a front-facing camera, but then it might have been nice to at least have voice calls integrated into Gtalk. Anyhow, if bug fixes are your thing, you can go grab your build number GRJ22 at the download link below or enjoy the anticipation of getting it over the air like everyone else. Android 2.3.4 heading to Nexus S over the air, bringing video and voice chat to Gtalk
April 29th, 2011
admin For an update with such a modest name, this is actually quite a major step forward. Google’s about to start delivering Android 2.3.4 to Nexus S devices out in the wild, and in among all the bug fixes and optimizations, users will find the addition of video and voice chat to Google Talk. You’ll be able to do it anywhere you can get a web connection going, whether by virtue of WiFi, 3G, 4G, or the force , and other Gingerbread handsets are expected to get the same improvements in time. For now, however, Google’s own-branded device is the only one enjoying the very freshest Gingerbread around. Mobilicity prepares HTC Emerald (aka MyTouch 4G) for northern ascent
April 20th, 2011
jedwan Following its launch of the Nexus S, Mobilicity is bringing another Android superstar to Canada with the HTC Emerald, known stateside as the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G. According to Mobilesyrup, we’re looking at a sticker price of $450 to $500 for this freshly re-minted device, so if you’re hoping to benefit from the carrier’s lower-cost monthly plans, we recommend you begin stacking up the loonies. Perceptive readers will note the phone is getting a Gingerbread upgrade just in time for its rumored mid-May arrival — but otherwise the Emerald is a MyTouch 4G through and through, featuring the same 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 768MB of RAM and five megapixel shooter that we’ve come to know and love on T-Mobile’s network. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope we also get a dash of subtlety in this revision, given the overly-excited styling we noted in our review . Nexus S immigrates to Canada, Future Shop commemorates event with gingerbread muffins
April 15th, 2011
admin It’s been a good week for Canadians to get a taste of Gingerbread, with today marking the official release of the Nexus S for our friends up north. To mark the event, lucky Toronto residents were greeted with a release party at Future Shop, replete with ginger-themed treats and giveaways. With availability spreading across the country, Samsung’s homage to Android purity is now available online through Mobilicity, Telus, Koodo, Wind, and Videotron, effectively tempting the majority of Canada with Google’s finest offering. If you’ll remember last week’s report on Mobilicity’s soft launch of this praised handset, we assumed Fido and Rogers were nipping at their heels… and while the Nexus S has yet to hit their online stores, you might find them sitting in your local Best Buy. So, Canada, how does it feel to get this awesome slab of engineering coming at you from all corners? Don’t worry, we’ll understand if this is an emotional time.
