Motorola Devour in the wild once again
February 19th, 2010
jedwan We’ve already seen the Motorola Devour in the wild once, but with the official Verizon launch right around the corner and pre-sales underway , it looks like at least one more unit has made it out into the world. Great — but we’d like a video of this thing and its mid-range processor running Flash , please. LG Arena officially lands on AT&T for $199
February 19th, 2010
jedwan No surprise the LG Arena has finally arrived on AT&T after we saw those spyshots earlier this year — although it is packing AT&T Mobile TV, so that’s a nice touch. Everything else is as predicted: 3-inch WVGA screen, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, GPS, and WiFi. Of course, you will be spending $199 on a two-year contract for a poorly-reviewed year-old featurephone when this hits on February 26, so that’s probably a mistake, but at least the gratuitous spinny-cube effects of LG’s S-Class UI will keep you distracted as you wander aimlessly through the wreckage of our once-proud civilization. There is also a web browser. LG Arena officially lands on AT&T for $199 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 19 Feb 2010 11:53:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Sprint promises its first WiMAX handset by this summer, could be the Supersonic
February 19th, 2010
admin The life of a gadget lover tends to involve a lot of waiting , so it’s always nice to be surprised by a roadmap getting shorter rather than longer. Sprint has told Forbes that its very first WiMAX phone will be arriving in the first half of this year, which will be somewhat earlier than many had expected. We’re likely talking about that A9292 “bar handset” from HTC that was spotted in January , as Forbes goes on to note that it’s likely to be a HTC-built Android device . The aptly-titled Supersonic seems like the obvious, albeit unconfirmed, prime candidate here. Further word from Paget Alves, Sprint’s president of Business Markets, indicates that businesses and government agencies might be the first adopters, which must mean whatever handset’s being discussed will be at least somewhat business-friendly. Finally, CEO Dan Hesse himself is cited as saying Sprint will be bringing out “dozens of devices” with embedded WiMAX this year, so even if you don’t like the first one, there should be plenty of options come the holidays. SK Telecom shoves Android onto a SIM, we check it out
February 18th, 2010
admin SK Telecom was showing off some interesting ideas about where it’d like to see SIM cards go in the future here at MWC this week, including a couple particularly juicy ones called Android SIM and the SIM Theme Package. Android SIM shoehorns a CPU, the Android OS, applications, user data, and 1GB of storage into the card pictured above. SK Telecom envisions it being used in dumbphones — as the CPU is onboard, there wouldn’t be a need for the device to have one — letting consumers move between sets or perhaps to a tablet with even more ease than they already can. SKT’s Theme SIMs use a similar smart card to take advantage of the storage space for theme elements, music, pictures, and any variety of apps that vendors or operators care to put in them. Follow on for a quick demo (and some minor failure — typical demo time Murphy’s Law) of moving the themed chips between two handsets. Visa teams with DeviceFidelity for contactless payments via microSD card
February 18th, 2010
admin Visa has been working on contactless (a.k.a. NFC ) payments for quite some time , and it’s now teamed up with DeviceFidelity in the hope of bringing them to even more cellphone users. That company makes (among other things) a contactless payment system contained on a microSD card which, when paired with Visa’s own payWave system, will let you use just about any microSD card slot-equipped cellphone to make pay contactless payments at between 50,000 to 60,000 merchants in the US. Exact specifics are otherwise a bit light, but Visa says trials are scheduled to begin in the second quarter of this year. Verizon launches FiOS Mobile Remote app for Droid and Imagio
February 18th, 2010
admin Controlling your TV from your phone isn’t a new concept , but Verizon just made it a bit sexier. Verizon FiOS owners this week can nab a new FiOS Mobile Remote app for their Motorola Droid or HTC Imagio . The application emulates regular remote buttons, but also tosses in an icon-based favorites view of channels, in addition to an ability to sling photos from the phone to the big screen. The phone hooks into your FiOS box over your local WiFi, and requires you to download a widget for the set top box as well to get everything synced up. We’re not exactly sure why this is limited to the Droid and Imagio right now — we’re sure the Droid Eris could handle the workload, for instance — but Verizon does say that it’s working on making additional handsets compatible in the future. Check out a video demo of the functionality after the break.
