AT&T demos speedy LTE, calls 28.8Mbps downloads realistic for real people

GigaOM got to peek inside inside AT&T’s Foundry innovation center in Texas this week, and the tour came with a special treat — a first glimpse at how AT&T’s upcoming LTE network might perform when the carrier flips the switch later this year . Where Verizon’s existing network promises download speeds of between 5 and 12 megabits per second (though we’ve gotten far better and worse in practice), the publication witnessed a connection with 28.87Mbps download and 10.4Mbps upload speeds, using a MIMO antenna passing bits through both 700MHz and AWS frequencies . “But,” you protest, “isn’t LTE capable of more?” Sure, but an AT&T executive told the publication that these were meant to be real-world numbers. Still, considering all the factors and where the test was held, it’s probably best to break out the table salt for now. Verizon CEO confirms plans for tiered data pricing

We told you so . The Wall Street Journal has updated its recent article detailing disclosures from Verizon Wireless chief Ivan Seidenberg, and the latest news is as bad as it is predictable: VZW plans to consign unlimited data plans to the annals of history over the next four to six months, to be replaced by tiered, consumption-based pricing. Seidenberg says Verizon’s prices will surely differ from what AT&T recently introduced , noting that his company values data differently to the competition — though he wouldn’t say whether that means costs will be higher or lower. Either way, Droidsters , enjoy your last few months in the unlimited sun. T-Mobile webConnect Rocket 2.0 leaks out, brings along Mac support and microSDHC slot

T-Mobile’s webConnect Rocket has only been delivering “4G speeds” to users in search of mobile internet for a handful of months now, but already the company looks to have a successor on deck. If a pair of leaked slides are to be believed, the webConnect Rocket 2.0 is mildly overhauled version of the original USB WWAN modem, capable of delivering HSPA+ speeds on both PC and Mac platforms. There’s also a nifty microSDHC slot for loading up to 16GB of storage, but outside of that, little else is known. We’re still waiting patiently for a price and release date to come our way, but in the meantime, feel free to slam the brakes on that impending Rocket 1.0 purchase.
