By a rough estimate, the library at Windows Marketplace now tops 21,000 apps — nearly twice the amount we reported near the end of May. While some platforms might be envious of this recent flurry, many of the titles are merely variants of single applications — uploaded by the hundreds — that flood the Marketplace, while forcing other qualified coders from the spotlight. It’s no cakewalk for customers either, who must wade through the deluge when shopping. In attempt to bring sanity to its store, the company is now restricting developers to (a rather lenient) 20 certifications per day and is pulling the worst offenders from the shelves. Not looking to burn bridges, however, Microsoft has promised to teach methods of creating custom, localized apps without the need for submitting dozens of versions. Supporting in-app purchasing would be a fine start, but we’ll leave that for Mr. Ballmer to flesh out. Not like he’s busy with anything else these days.

Want more Android in your house? How about Android in your house. Google wants to think of “every appliance in your home” as a potential accessory for your phone. The opportunities are seemingly endless, the sort of thing we’ve seen in the Zigbee and Z-wave areas, but sadly this implementation doesn’t actually seem to be using any of those standards. The team teased ideas like lights turning on and off based on calendar events, applications talking to washing machines, games automatically adjusting for mood lighting, and basically little green dudes taking care of all the menial duties in your house.

One amazing demo was a concept, Android-powered device hub called Tungsten. Using RFID embedded into CD cases the device was able to detect the CD and add it to your library. Another touch and it started automatically. Yeah, the use of CDs is a little quaint, but the potential is there for amazing things in the future. We’re not sure exactly when these accessories will be launching, but the first are expected before the end of the year.

There isn’t much to say about this Android-based game (of sorts): select from 1-, 2-, and 5-meter lengths via options (actually centimeters once you get on the track), then proceed to “run” your fingers across the screen until the counter hits zero. The goal is fastest time, and longer swipes will get you to the goal faster. It’s about as barebones as you can get — at least the textured track scrolls as you make your dash — but we’re sure there’s enough people out there with a competitive streak that’ll love to challenge friends and family. Besides, it’s free, and if you’re the sort who downloads a ton of apps anyway, it’s good exercise for when you need to scroll through your library. You know what?
