Isis mobile payments coming to Austin in 2012

Certain to “Keep Austin Weird,” Isis has selected the home of SXSW as its second market for a mobile payment tryout. The joint-venture backed by AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless (with help from MasterCard and Visa ), will work with local merchants and the Chamber of Commerce to deliver what it calls a “comprehensive mobile experience” by mid-2012. Isis’ latest metropolitan recruit joins Salt Lake City in this experiment that will compete with Google Wallet (which is endorsed by Sprint). Quick advice to Austinites: when out-of-towners begin gawking at you for getting “free” lattes and concert tickets by waving your phone about, be sure to explain the wonders of NFC — it’d be a shame for them to attempt the same — only to be taken into custody by the Austin PD. Jump the break for the PR. Motorola Droid 3 official in China under Milestone 3 moniker, packs 4-inch qHD display

The Droid 3 is upon us! Well, it is if you live in China and don’t mind calling it the Milestone 3. A new XT883 model has just been made official by Motorola during China Telecom’s CDMA Summit, touting the tagline “the third Milestone” and a new five-row slideout QWERTY keyboard. The salient specs include a 4-inch touchscreen with qHD (540 x 960) resolution, a dual-core processor capable of driving 1080p video recording, an 8 megapixel rear camera with LED flash, up to 32GB of built-in storage, and of course, Android 2.3 as the shipping OS. A pretty compelling package, we think you’ll agree. It’s coming to China this summer, though Moto could still be crafty enough to squeeze the US launch in before actual units start shipping to Yao Ming’s homeland. Because, well, who’s ever heard of a Milestone coming before a Droid? Infuse 4G coming exclusively to Rogers, its first 21Mbps smartphone

If you’re of the gambling type who wagered on Samsung’s Canadian launch partner for the Infuse 4G , you can settle up those bets: the phone is coming exclusively to Rogers this summer — and it’s shipping with Gingerbread. For those familiar with AT&T’s story , it should come as no surprise that the carrier quickly highlighted the Sammy as its first smartphone capable of pulling in 21Mbps — good luck attaining those numbers, though. Sadly, the release date and price of this 4.5-inch beast remain up in the air, but that might just be an opening for some high-stakes speculation. Apple’s iOS 5: all the details

Scott Forstall has just taken the WWDC 2011 stage and details about the changes and improvements in iOS 5 are flowing thick and fast. Keep one tab in your browser locked to this post as we update it with all the new features, and throw another one open for our liveblog where you’ll get to see and read the very latest as it happens. – Firstly, stats. Scott notes that Apple has so far sold 200 million iOS devices, with more than 25 million of those being iPads. There have been 14 billion downloads from the App Store, tallying over $2.5 billion paid out in revenue to app developers. The iTunes Store isn’t doing badly, either, with 15 billion songs sold. – And the first new feature: an overhaul of notifications . At last! A new Notification Center aggregates all your, well, notifications into one and is accessible by swiping down a menu from the top of the screen. Yes, just like Android . Small X buttons alongside each note allow you to dismiss it, though there’s no “clear all” option for the more decisive among us. Notifications are also making their way onto the lockscreen, where swiping across a text message takes you right into it. A little something like Samsung’s TouchWiz implementation. – Newsstand is a new place to house all your magazine and newspaper subscriptions. – Twitter integration is also coming to iOS 5, with a single sign-in allowing a multitude of apps to make use of your Twitter credentials. That includes the Camera and Photos programs, finally letting you tweet images out directly from your galleries. – Safari Reader is a new browser feature that will strip out distractions and present the text of a webpage with no other excess content. Accessible via a button next to the address bar. Also added to the iOS browser is a Reading List, which does what the name suggests by accumulating a list of pages you want to read later. Accessible on multiple devices. Tabbed browsing is making a debut in v5.0 as well, which is sure to be a boon for iPad users. – Reminders is another self-descriptive feature. This one’s intelligent enough to remind you to do things based on your location. It’ll sync across devices and with your calendar. – Yay, there’s now a camera button right on your lockscreen ! The volume-up button is also doubling up as a physical shutter release key when you’re in the camera app. Pinch-to-zoom is said to be available right in the app, while holding your finger down on a particular area will lock down exposure to optimize the shot for its particular lighting. Some new in-device editing options have also been added, including cropping, rotation, red-eye reduction, and a one-click enhance option. – A new split keyboard has also been shown off in iOS 5. – Headline feature: PC Free! No more cables required for syncing. Now we’re talking. Setting up and activating a new iOS device can be done right on the device itself, and syncing will be wireless too — there’ll be no need to tether to a computer anymore. Over-the-air updates are also part of the new deal, and in better news still, they’ll contain only the data that’s changed, meaning you won’t have to re-download the entire OS every time Apple opts to make a minor tweak. – Another pretty significant novelty: iMessage . It’s a messaging service exclusively for iOS users (irrespective of which device they’re rocking), which comes with delivery and read receipts, an indicator for when the other party is typing, and the ability to push messages to all your devices. Kinda, sorta like BBM. You’ll be able to send messages, photos, videos, and contacts. Group messaging will also be available. It works over either WiFi or 3G and looks to be making good use of Apple’s new push notifications. – iOS 5 will ship in the fall to the following devices: iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, iPad 1 and 2, and iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation. T-Mobile USA to launch HTC Sensation on June 15, hits Wal-Mart ‘as early as June 12′

The foremost question in the hive mind of Android power users these days is typically whether to go with HTC’s 1.2GHz, dual-core, 4.3-inch Sensation or the similarly specced Galaxy S II from Samsung. Of course, neither of those is actually out in the US yet, so if patience is not your favorite virtue, T-Mobile just made that decision for you. The carrier has announced it’ll start selling the HTC Sensation from June 12th at Walmart stores, after which it’ll be “exclusively” available on June 15th from T-Mobile retail stores. Think about it. Samsung’s superphone shouldn’t be too far behind, but it does look like T-Mo subscribers will get a good few weeks to familiarize themselves with Sense 3.0 before having to hear any gloating about Super AMOLED Plus displays and 8.49mm slimness. PR after the break. Verizon bonanza: Droid X2, Revolution, Trophy, and Xperia Play hit Big Red today

Verizon is seriously diversifying its portfolio today with the official in-store launch of four new smartphones. Three of them roll up in Android gear, though they all have major selling points beyond Google’s software. LG’s Revolution is the sole LTE -capable handset of the bunch, bringing with it a 4.3-inch screen and pre-installed Netflix for $250. The Droid X2 undercuts it on price, at $200, but doubles the core count with its Tegra 2 processor and ramps up resolution to qHD (960 x 540). Gaming aficionados can spend the same amount on the Xperia Play from Sony Ericsson, which offers a slideout gamepad and unique PlayStation Certified status. Bringing up the rear is HTC’s well-traveled Trophy , a 3.8-inch Windows Phone that accepts it’s a little late to the party and therefore slices $50 off its asking price, with a $150 levy before the obligatory two-year contract. What say you — buy, try, or keep waiting? Verizon bonanza: Droid X2, Revolution, Trophy, and Xperia Play hit Big Red today originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 26 May 2011 02:30:00 EST. Droid Charge to finally light up on Verizon Wireless tomorrow (update: official!)

Our testing of the Droid Charge got off to a bit of a rough start thanks to Verizon’s wee tiny LTE outage that just so happened to hit at the same time as the phone. Thanks (at least in part) to that, the official launch of the device was delayed, and while we still don’t have confirmation of why or just how long the delay was supposed to be, we do have multiple tips from multiple lovely readers in multiple positions at Verizon telling us the phone will be properly hitting stores on the 14th. We’re working on official confirmation but, for now, it sure looks like tomorrow you’ll be able to mosey on over to your local VZW outlet and get yourself $299 worth of LTE and OLED. Update: We just got official confirmation from Verizon that the phone will be available tomorrow in-store and online tonight! Details in the PR below. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Continue reading Droid Charge to finally light up on Verizon Wireless tomorrow (update: official!)
