Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.5 updates your Facebook, turns your iPhone into a wireless mic

All your sci-fi dreams of being able to talk to your gadgets and have the do your bidding are slowly becoming a reality. Nuance , the company behind Dragon NaturallySpeaking, has been at the forefront of the technology since 1997 and, with the release of 11.5, it has added a few neat tricks to its dictation-taking repertoire. On the desktop side, new widgets allow you to post updates to your Facebook and Twitter accounts simply by saying “post to” you social network of choice before spouting off your status update — perfect for drunk tweeting when those beer goggles make it hard to hit the keys. Nuance also released the Dragon Remote Mic App for iOS, which turns your Apple device into a wireless mic that beams commands and dictated notes straight to your PC. We’re pretty excited for all this voice control stuff — so long as our computers don’t start refusing our requests in a detached monotone. Check out the PR after the break. Apple adds camera shortcut to lock screen, volume up shutter key, and other enhancements to iOS 5

Apple’s just announced that iOS 5-enabled iPhones (and likely iPads and iPods, too) are getting a camera shortcut on the lock screen, the ability to snap pics by pressing the volume up button, AE / AF lock (hold touch-to-focus to lock), and a photo editor with crop, rotate, red-eye reduction and auto-enhance features. Developing…stay tuned to our liveblog for the latest. Apple’s iOS 5: all the details

Scott Forstall has just taken the WWDC 2011 stage and details about the changes and improvements in iOS 5 are flowing thick and fast. Keep one tab in your browser locked to this post as we update it with all the new features, and throw another one open for our liveblog where you’ll get to see and read the very latest as it happens. – Firstly, stats. Scott notes that Apple has so far sold 200 million iOS devices, with more than 25 million of those being iPads. There have been 14 billion downloads from the App Store, tallying over $2.5 billion paid out in revenue to app developers. The iTunes Store isn’t doing badly, either, with 15 billion songs sold. – And the first new feature: an overhaul of notifications . At last! A new Notification Center aggregates all your, well, notifications into one and is accessible by swiping down a menu from the top of the screen. Yes, just like Android . Small X buttons alongside each note allow you to dismiss it, though there’s no “clear all” option for the more decisive among us. Notifications are also making their way onto the lockscreen, where swiping across a text message takes you right into it. A little something like Samsung’s TouchWiz implementation. – Newsstand is a new place to house all your magazine and newspaper subscriptions. – Twitter integration is also coming to iOS 5, with a single sign-in allowing a multitude of apps to make use of your Twitter credentials. That includes the Camera and Photos programs, finally letting you tweet images out directly from your galleries. – Safari Reader is a new browser feature that will strip out distractions and present the text of a webpage with no other excess content. Accessible via a button next to the address bar. Also added to the iOS browser is a Reading List, which does what the name suggests by accumulating a list of pages you want to read later. Accessible on multiple devices. Tabbed browsing is making a debut in v5.0 as well, which is sure to be a boon for iPad users. – Reminders is another self-descriptive feature. This one’s intelligent enough to remind you to do things based on your location. It’ll sync across devices and with your calendar. – Yay, there’s now a camera button right on your lockscreen ! The volume-up button is also doubling up as a physical shutter release key when you’re in the camera app. Pinch-to-zoom is said to be available right in the app, while holding your finger down on a particular area will lock down exposure to optimize the shot for its particular lighting. Some new in-device editing options have also been added, including cropping, rotation, red-eye reduction, and a one-click enhance option. – A new split keyboard has also been shown off in iOS 5. – Headline feature: PC Free! No more cables required for syncing. Now we’re talking. Setting up and activating a new iOS device can be done right on the device itself, and syncing will be wireless too — there’ll be no need to tether to a computer anymore. Over-the-air updates are also part of the new deal, and in better news still, they’ll contain only the data that’s changed, meaning you won’t have to re-download the entire OS every time Apple opts to make a minor tweak. – Another pretty significant novelty: iMessage . It’s a messaging service exclusively for iOS users (irrespective of which device they’re rocking), which comes with delivery and read receipts, an indicator for when the other party is typing, and the ability to push messages to all your devices. Kinda, sorta like BBM. You’ll be able to send messages, photos, videos, and contacts. Group messaging will also be available. It works over either WiFi or 3G and looks to be making good use of Apple’s new push notifications. – iOS 5 will ship in the fall to the following devices: iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, iPad 1 and 2, and iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation. ooVoo brings its webcam wares to iOS with six-way video calling and more

If getting your family together under one roof feels like herding cats, then you might consider ooVoo Mobile as a far less painful solution. It’s now available for iOS and supports (nearly) free six-way video chatting for you and five webcam-toting friends. The one catch is that someone in the conference must purchase a monthly plan, otherwise you’re limited to three participants. We’ve already seen this app released for Android , and both versions feature: six-way conferencing, group texting, voice calls to other users, and — if you’re willing to purchase credits or a monthly plan — outbound calling to landlines and mobile phones. Subscription prices start at $9.95 per month if you want to use the service to its full potential, but it seems there’s plenty to enjoy without spending a dime. And if you’re a cheapskate who’s determined to have it all, perhaps you can convince someone else to foot the bill. ooVoo brings its webcam wares to iOS with six-way video calling and more originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 27 May 2011 18:32:00 EST. Western Digital Photos app on iOS and Android update allows sharing directly to WD TV Live Hubs

The latest version of the WD Photos app for iOS and Android devices has a new trick, it can directly share photos from your mobile device to a WD TV Live Hub set-top box. The press release calls it the first smartphone-to-HDTV sharing app, but we’ve seen similar concepts from Verizon’s Flex View and apps that use DLNA to share media from mobile to the TV or TV connected devices. Still, one button press sharing is a neat trick and with the addition of the free app may be a nice feature to compete with other set-top boxes like the Roku family, Boxee Box or the Apple TV’s tight iTunes / iPhoto integration. Users can grab the apps from iTunes or the Android Market at the links below, there’s more details available in the press release after the break. Amazon Cloud Player streams tunes to iOS, following silent update

Amazon Cloud Player has been laying low following its scuffle with Sony Music , but that hasn’t kept the company’s developers from rolling a crucial new feature out — support for Apple’s iOS devices, which it didn’t have on day one . Despite running in the Safari browser window, we’ve confirmed that songs will indeed play. If you’ve got a device handy, give it a try yourself; otherwise, we’ll update with impressions a little later this evening. iOS 5 updates expected to be carried over-the-air, at least for the Verizon iPhone

Having spent a good part of our day yesterday negotiating with iTunes and downloading a whopping 666.2MB file to update our iPhone to version 4.3.3 — a version, we might add, whose sole claim to fame is the removal of things — we know well the pains of updating Apple’s mobile software. Those aches, however, may soon be coming to an end. 9to5Mac has multiple sources informing it that Apple and Verizon are scheming to start delivering iOS updates over the air from this fall, or just as soon as iOS 5 is made available. Untethered OS updates are a familiar feature to users of other smartphone operating systems and even the iOS-infused Apple TV , but getting Apple’s mobile devices up to date has so far always required going through the company’s own cable and software. There’s no reason to believe this wireless update feature will be limited to Verizon, mind you — that’s just where the informants are coming from in this instance — though Apple will almost certainly have to alter the file sizes of its updates. We can’t think of many carriers who’ll be happy to push more than half a gigabyte of data per user per update. Additionally, since iTunes currently acts as the major backup hub, 9to5Mac speculates Cupertino must be working on a cloud backup service as well, which would seem a very sensible idea. Of course, that doesn’t paint a very happy or busy future for iTunes, but so what? iOS 5 updates expected to be carried over-the-air, at least for the Verizon iPhone originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 05 May 2011 04:09:00 EST. ITC judge sides with Apple in Elan multitouch patent dispute

It’s not over just yet, but Apple has now scored a significant victory in its longstanding dispute with Elan Microelectronics. As those with a long memory for patent-related matters may recall, Elan had claimed that Apple infringed on two of its multitouch-related patents in its various iOS devices, and it asked the ITC to impose an outright ban on the sale of those devices until the matter was settled. That obviously hasn’t happened, and ITC Judge Paul Luckern has now ruled that it shouldn’t happen in the future either, as he found that Apple did not violate the patents in question. That now leaves the final decision in the hands of the full International Trade Commission, which is expected to issue its ruling in August.
