This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone: in the latest chapter of the Apple-Samsung dispute over their smartphones’ resemblance, the latter company has just retaliated by filing lawsuits against Apple in three countries. Sammy’s load of ammo include five patent infringements in South Korea, two in Japan, and three in Germany, though we’ve yet to hear more details about these claims. Now we just sit back and enjoy the show — popcorn, anyone? iPhone 3GS falls to free in Canada (now that you’re over it)
April 6th, 2011
jedwan Canadian citizens suffering from iPhone envy are in for a sweet treat this weekend. Mobile carriers Bell and Telus recently introduced competing promotions, offering the iPhone 3GS 8GB for precisely nothing with a three-year commitment. This presents an enticing opportunity for those willing to saddle up with Apple’s last-gen phone for the long ( long ) haul, but really, is anyone still interested in actually doing so? With Telus, only refurbished models are available, and it appears to be an online exclusive for now. Meanwhile, Bell’s promo features new (as in unused) 3GS’, and should be available in stores. Nothing like watching a race to the bottom, eh? iPhone 3GS falls to free in Canada (now that you’re over it) originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Sun, 03 Apr 2011 09:24:00 EST. redsn0w untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 released for Windows and OS X, lacks iPad 2 support
April 6th, 2011
jedwan If you’ve been waiting for a nice, easy jailbreak solution for iOS 4.3.1, then today’s your lucky day: Dev-Team’s just released redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 for both Windows and OS X, allowing us mere mortals to free our supported devices — iPhone 3GS, 4 (GSM); iPod touch 3G, 4G; iPad 1; and Apple TV 2G — with a few simple clicks. Alas, there are a couple of caveats: the iPad 2 isn’t supported here, as Cupertino has somehow managed to tighten up its security to fend off hackers (for now); and ultrasn0w users have also been told to hang tight until there’s a compatibility fix — Dev-Team will announce on Twitter when this becomes available. As for those who are eligible for this new jailbreak, head over to Dev-Team’s website for the download links, and make sure you have the corresponding IPSW files handy as well — you can find them over at iClarified or on your favorite search engine. Skype video calling for iPhone is official, available now (update: hands-on)
January 1st, 2011
jedwan All signs have been pointing to this release for a few days now , but we’ll admit: we expected Skype to wait until CES next week to pull the covers off what could become its crown jewel service over the coming months. Skype’s official iOS client has finally sprouted the ability to make video calls, allowing iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and fourth-generation iPod touch users to share real-time video amongst each other and users of Skype’s Windows, Mac, and Linux clients along with the ASUS Videophone (obviously, 3GS users won’t have the convenience of a front-facing camera, but they’ll still be able to broadcast video from the rear-facing one). Additionally, you’ll be able to receive video from others if you’re using an iPad or a third-generation iPod touch. The service is free and works over both WiFi and 3G — and considering Skype’s existing PC footprint, we’d argue this stands a very real chance of putting the hurt on FaceTime usage. No word on when Skype will be making video-capable clients available for Android or other mobile platforms, but Skype says that there’ll be “plenty more” announcements in Vegas next week, so we wouldn’t be surprised. Update: So we just gave 3.0 a spin, calling iPhone-to-iPhone (both WiFi), iPhone-to-desktop (both WiFi), and again iPhone-to-iPhone (both 3G). The first two worked great, although the desktop camera produced better quality. As for the worst-case scenario, 3G-to-3G video calling, well… we wouldn’t recommend it unless absolutely necessary. Video after the break, and be sure to note the battery life — after about 10 minutes of use, we dropped from 66 percent to 61. Pleco Chinese Dictionary iPhone app now handling real-time image translations
November 25th, 2010
jedwan Talk about timely. We’ve been waiting for months (with bated breath, might we add) for Pleco 2.2 to finally hit Apple’s App Store, and after dealing with a few launch day bugs last week, we can finally say it’s out and ready to dominate any Chinese homework you’ve been hastily procrastinating on. The Pleco Chinese Dictionary is now available in the app store at version 2.2.1, supporting both fullscreen handwriting input and live camera-based character recognition. Have a peek at the video past the break if you’re still curious as to what this app can do for you, and feel free to toss your experiences with it down in comments below. Here’s hoping this is only the first of many languages Pleco decides to tackle — not that we’re much on tossing out subtle hints . Caption contest: Gulliver’s iPhone makes it big in Hollywood
November 5th, 2010
jedwan So apparently the hidden island of Lilliput has cellular coverage, but who cares — it’s still gonna be another crap movie. Way to ruin Gulliver’s Travels with Jack Black. Joe: “Finally, Angry Birds the way it was meant to be played.” Darren: “That’s a big iPhone.” Josh T.: “The monolith taught the monkeys to kill, also, how to make conference calls.” Paul: “Time-traveling Jack Black plants hidden iPhone reference in Jonathan Swift novel.” Thomas: “It’s holding you wrong.” Tim: “Eighteen months ago, the first evidence of intelligent life off the Earth was discovered. It was buried forty feet below the lunar surface, near the crater Cupertino.” Vlad: “It’s just a jumbo iPhone, I don’t see what all the fuss is about.” Sam: “What does this mean? It’s so bright, so vivid.” Sean H.: “And so did the tiny scholars toil for decades to unravel the mysteries of the blue block, and the significance of its question marks.” Richard Lai: “Paul Miller makes a cameo appearance in this scene, tut-tuts at the low pixel density.” Myriam: “I’m crushing your head! I’m crushing your head!” Continue reading Caption contest: Gulliver’s iPhone makes it big in Hollywood Caption contest: Gulliver’s iPhone makes it big in Hollywood originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 12:57:00 EST.
