Verizon CFO suggests next iPhone will be a ‘global device’

We’re guessing it wasn’t on the company’s agenda for its earnings call earlier today, but Verizon CFO Fran Shammo let slip one other interesting iPhone tidbit in addition to its news of 2.2 million iPhone 4 activations . Here’s what he said: The fluctuation, I believe, will come when a new device from Apple is launched, whenever that may be, and that we will be, on the first time, on equal footing with our competitors on a new phone hitting the market, which will also be a global device. That pretty clearly suggests that the next iPhone — supposedly coming in September — will be a world phone, which just so happens to coincide with rumors to same effect we’ve heard as recently as this week . Of course, there’s been talk of a dual-mode GSM / CDMA iPhone even before that, considering that the Qualcomm baseband chip used in the Verizon iPhone is technically capable of supporting both CDMA and GSM networks — Apple simply chose not to or wasn’t able to take advantage of that particular functionality at the time. BlackBerry OS 6.0 screenshots and details leak out

The leaks, they keep coming. Boy Genius has some new images and details on BlackBerry OS 6.0 today, and while we’ve got our fair share of questions, there’s no denying that what we’re seeing looks like a substantial and much-needed improvement to the platform. First off, it appears that RIM’s acquisition of Torch Mobile has paid off with a totally new WebKit-based browser, complete with tab switching, redesigned favorites, and pinch-to-zoom. About time, we’d say. Pinch-to-zoom and multitouch are also said said to be present system-wide, along with kinetic scrolling, and long-pressing on the screen brings up a new modal context menu. That’s definitely intriguing. The media player, photo viewer, and messaging apps have all also been re-done, and we’re told the new inbox offers Facebook, Twitter, and RSS integration. The best part? BGR says this is all due out in June / July, “100%.” Now, here’s the interesting parts. First, it’s obvious that this system is made for and being demoed on a touchscreen device, yet BGR says it was being shown off by an “AT&T connect.” That suggests Ol’ Blue is about to get a touchscreen BlackBerry of its own to counter Verizon’s Storm sometime soon — perhaps that leaked slider ? We can’t say for sure. What we can say for sure is that this is the third set of 6.0 leaks we’ve seen that have content about San Francisco and the earthquake in Haiti displayed on the screen — and while RIM has said the previous two leaks were just mockups, it’s more than a little odd that SF / Haiti has become a theme here. What does it all mean? We may never know, but whatever — just hit us with that new browser and we’ll stop asking questions. Sprint Airave gets remixed by Airvana, has VoIP landline and EV-DO support

The Samsung-sourced femtocell that Sprint and Verizon have been offering (as the Airave and Wireless Network Extender , respectively) is all well and good, but it’s got one fatal flaw: unlike AT&T’s aptly-named 3G MicroCell , it doesn’t have support for 3G data — it’s compatible with CDMA 1x alone. Verizon’s fixing that later this year with an updated model from Samsung , but thanks to a fresh FCC filing, it looks like Sprint will be taking a different route by roping in Airvana for the Airave’s successor. On top of EV-DO, the interesting bit about this puppy is that it supports a VoIP-routed landline connection around back; we’re not sure whether Sprint actually plans on enabling this extra jack, but it’s specifically mentioned in the draft manual, so we wouldn’t doubt it. No word on a release just yet — but FCC approval is frequently one of the last steps on a product’s road to retail, so we might see it soon. Franklin Wireless intros U600 WiMAX modem, R526 and R536 mobile routers

Franklin Wireless supplies modems (primarily of the CDMA variety) to a number of carriers across the Western Hemisphere, and they’ve introduced a handful of rather interesting new products in that vein here at CTIA this week. First up, the U600 is an EV-DO Rev. A / WiMAX hybrid USB modem with a 270-degree swiveling USB connector for those ridiculously hard-to-manage ports ( ahem , Apple), integrated GPS, and zero-CD installation — all pretty standard features these days, and we saw a Sprint-branded unit at Franklin’s booth which leads us to believe we’ll be seeing it at retail shortly. Much more interesting, though, was a pair of pocketable WiFi routers — the R526 and R536 — that support EV-DO and EV-DO / WiMAX, respectively. Most of the units were unbranded, but we did spy an R536 done up in snow white with a Clear logo slapped up top, so you can pretty much gather that this thing will be filling a glaring hole in Clear’s lineup (right now, the best you can do is a USB modem plus the Clear Spot, which is basically a branded Cradlepoint ). What intrigued us about the R536 the most was the fact that it’s got the functionality of an Overdrive packed into a smaller, more MiFi -esque form factor without any of the Overdrive’s bells and whistles, so it’ll be a great alternative as long as it performs well and has enough juice to last a couple hours off the power grid; the 3G-only R526, meanwhile, had an Ethernet jack stuck on the side, which is kind of cool in the rare event that you need to connect a WiFi-less device and you don’t want to go through the hassle of installing a new driver. The R526 launches in April (with what carrier, we’re not sure) — as does the U600 — while the R536 should start to trickle out in May.
