What’s this we spy in the dusty depths of a Telstra software update page? A little sentence that displays some crowd-pleasing logic in bringing Android 2.3 to the hoary old Desire. HTC originally told us the handset had insufficient memory to run Gingerbread, and so would be excluded from the update. Then it did a 180-flip and said the Desire would be getting Gingerbread after all, but with the sacrifice of some memory-hogging apps. But now Aussie Telstra has opted for arguably the smartest alternative: prepare a special update that kicks HTC’s Sense UI out of the pub instead, freeing up plenty of room for Gingerbread while also pleasing punters who like to drink their Android neat . If it can work Down Under in August, other operators around the world ought to be able to make it work too. And if they don’t, there’s always the option of a spicy home-brewed beverage instead. [Thanks, Alejandro] Telstra will scrap Sense UI to make room for Gingerbread on the HTC Desire originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Jun 2011 07:38:00 EST. Is this the HTC EVO 4G+? (update: official!)
June 23rd, 2011
jedwan Well, what do we have here? Hard to say for sure, but it looks like this just might be the rumored HTC Kingdom (or more likely its doublemint twin Rider that showed up in stills this morning) that recently visited the FCC — basically a CDMA and WiMAX-capable Sensation . Considering that the leaked video is titled “HTC EVO 4G+ preview,” and that the handset pictured is cosmetically identical to the EVO 3D except for the camera pod, we’re inclined to believe that this might just be destined for Sprint — although that WiBRO setting means this particular unit is destined for the Korean market. The twin 5 megapixel cameras have been replaced with a single 8 megapixel shooter housed in a similar sized pod, and the 2D / 3D mode slider next to the shutter key now switches between photos and video. Let’s just hope we’re not dealing with a discarded prototype or an Asia-only model, and that the phone’s guts are just as juicy and delicious as its 3D sibling — complete with qHD display and dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor. Update : And just like that, it’s official! HTC has just thrown down an official landing page for the EVO 4G+, and according to it, it’s a phone that’s “everything you can imagine.” Bold. T-Mobile USA to launch HTC Sensation on June 15, hits Wal-Mart ‘as early as June 12′
June 1st, 2011
admin The foremost question in the hive mind of Android power users these days is typically whether to go with HTC’s 1.2GHz, dual-core, 4.3-inch Sensation or the similarly specced Galaxy S II from Samsung. Of course, neither of those is actually out in the US yet, so if patience is not your favorite virtue, T-Mobile just made that decision for you. The carrier has announced it’ll start selling the HTC Sensation from June 12th at Walmart stores, after which it’ll be “exclusively” available on June 15th from T-Mobile retail stores. Think about it. Samsung’s superphone shouldn’t be too far behind, but it does look like T-Mo subscribers will get a good few weeks to familiarize themselves with Sense 3.0 before having to hear any gloating about Super AMOLED Plus displays and 8.49mm slimness. PR after the break. HTC Sensation review
May 28th, 2011
admin A hotly anticipated smartphone with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a “Super” 4.3-inch screen, and a manufacturer-skinned version of Android 2.3 — we must be talking about the Samsung Galaxy S II , right? Not on this occasion, squire. Today we’re taking a gander at HTC’s Sensation , a handset that’s just begun shipping in Europe under a short-term Vodafone exclusive and which should be making its way to T-Mobile in the USA early next month . By beating its stablemate the EVO 3D and Moto’s Droid X2 to the market, the Sensation becomes the world’s first 4.3-inch smartphone with qHD resolution, while also serving as the debut phone for HTC’s Watch movie streaming service and Sense 3.0 UI customizations. That leaves us with an abundance of newness to review, so what are we waiting for? HTC Wildfire S earns top marks with FCC, supports AT&T compatible 3G
April 30th, 2011
jedwan HTC ‘s newly announced Wildfire S — or model number PG76110 — just finished pinballing its way through the FCC’s labs, coming out the other side with 1900 / 850MHz dual-band HSPA. As a quick refresher, this phone was launched at MWC this year and features a 3.2-inch display, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, Bluetooth 3.0, and runs Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Considering how many handsets are still shipping with Froyo, we expect this combination of Google’s newest OS, HTC’s Sense UI V3.0, plus an affordable price point to make the Wildfire S a popular device when it finally hits these shores. Of course, before you get all giddy, we’d like to remind you that while the Wildfire S does support the right 3G bands for AT&T, there’s no guarantee it’ll end up there. HTC Desire gets unsanctioned build of Android 2.3.3 courtesy of 911Sniper
April 21st, 2011
admin When we last checked in with HTC’s Desire, an upgrade from Android 2.2 to 2.3 had been announced for release in late May or June. While Gingerbread hasn’t officially rolled out for this Nexus One kin, the crew at 911Sniper recently leaked the Desire’s upcoming European / Asian ROM, complete with Android 2.3.3 and Sense 2.1. Many daring enthusiasts have already taken the plunge, reporting mixed results with flashing their device. it’s worth noting, however, that when installed properly, user reports are quite positive. HTC Sense 3.0 will only support Sensation, EVO 3D, Flyer and newer devices; older hardware left behind
April 15th, 2011
admin Unfortunate news for anyone who saw HTC’s Sense 3.0 UI and started dreaming about seeing it on their Desire HD, Incredible S or any other handset that doesn’t ship with it preloaded. HTC has said that because of the hardware requirements of the fancier new Android skin, only the dual-core Sensation 4G and EVO 3D smartphones and the 1.5GHz Flyer tablet will be benefiting from it for now. The company’s expected to introduce more tablets in the summer and its inevitable march forward with smartphones will continue, but Sense 3.0 — and those delectable multifunctional lock screens — will remain the exclusive privilege of its highest-end devices. Update : Those older devices may be missing the boat, but they will at least get a set of floaties. HTC left a message on Twitter that the company is “working to incorporate other aspects” of Sense 3.0 that will come to older devices. Hopefully this includes that flash new weather app. Continue reading HTC Sense 3.0 will only support Sensation, EVO 3D, Flyer and newer devices; older hardware left behind HTC Sense 3.0 will only support Sensation, EVO 3D, Flyer and newer devices; older hardware left behind originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 14 Apr 2011 07:43:00 EST.
