Samsung Captivate gets Gingerbread through leaked software update

It’s been about four months since the Samsung Captivate got a software update , and that was merely to step up from Eclair to Froyo. And while AT&T still hasn’t pushed out an upgrade to Gingerbread, leaked versions of the official software are said to be floating around the big, wide Internet. So far, we’re not seeing much feedback, good or bad, but it should go without saying that you install this at your own risk. If you’re feeling daring or just dubious that AT&T will release this update anytime soon, hit the source links for instructions on how to install the software… and what to do should something go terribly awry. And, as always, do tell us how it goes. Samsung Captivate gets Gingerbread through leaked software update originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 17 Jun 2011 16:19:00 EST. PhoneIt-iPad available via Cydia now, claims it’ll turn your iPad 3G into a phone (video)

They hacked Facetime onto the iPhone 3GS , and now they’ve done it again — the iPhoneIslam team’s bringing cellular calling and texting to your jailbroken iPad 3G. We haven’t been able to test it for ourselves quite yet, but the new PhoneIt-iPad app should be available through the team’s Cydia repository right now, and it’ll cost $20 to bring out the full potential of your slate. And with that, it’s only a matter of time before iPad sidetalking becomes a meme. Homebrew utility lets you backup Windows Phone on your terms

Are you itching to find a manual backup solution for your Windows Phone ? That’s a tough one to scratch. Currently, the only way to fully protect your handset’s data is to wait for Microsoft to issue new updates — where backups are automatically created within Zune during install. Now, xda-developers member “hx4700 Killer” is eliminating those long waits with a homebrew solution that works directly with Zune by spoofing an update — thereby triggering a backup. We’re told everything on your phone gets saved, and you can even roll back to your prior software version. To do this you’ll need a few things: Zune itself, Windows Phone Support Tools, an update package from any Windows Phone, and this killer utility. So, if you feel like doing the time warp again, hit the source article for the required downloads and some helpful instructions. StreakDroid 2.0.0 gives the gift of Gingerbread to Streak hackers

If you’ve been following along, you know that a phone enthusiast named DJ_Steve has kept the Dell Streak fresh, thanks to a series of hacked ROMs, dubbed StreakDroid. The latest version, 2.0.0 (or GingerStreak, if you’re feeling cute) brings Gingerbread to the 5-inch smartphone — expanding on the last ROM , which gave hackers the option of selecting Gingerbread’s app launcher. As always, though, dear Steve has noted a handful of bugs in the ROM’s early stages, including issues with the Superuser app, less-than-stellar graphics performance, and the fact that both GPS and 720p video recording require an engineering baseband and DSP to be flashed. As of this writing, all of the comments are from Streak owners eager to download this for themselves. We assume you are, too, so let us know how the new ROM works out for ya. Homebrew dev previews multitasking on Windows Phone 7, Microsoft issues stern warning (video)

Oh, hackers… how we heart thee: following our story on Jaxbot’s fascinating instant app resuming mod on Windows Phone 7, the plucky dev has taken tricks a step further — this time demoing a workaround that struts true multitasking on your handset. Now before you start rushing to the source link, please note we say “demoing” intentionally as no release date has been set, and Jax is only previewing this work-in-progress to solicit user input (and achieve bragging rights, of course). Meanwhile, Microsoft has taken notice of developers’ growing tenacity and is pleading for patience on its official blog, warning users to stay clear of these unsanctioned techniques citing unknown consequences. We’re inclined to believe they aren’t fully bluffing, considering their update track history , and all. Keeping in mind there’s nothing to download just yet, check out WP7 tossing around apps in the background after the break, and let Jaxbot know what you think, will ya? Apple hacker digs up Qualcomm baseband proof by decompiling iTunes?

We’re a little short-staffed on Qualcomm chipset engineers at the moment, so forgive us if we can’t immediately confirm this tale, but we’re hearing iPhone hacker Zibri has discovered proof of the Apple / Qualcomm collaboration in his very own build of iTunes. Zibri claims that by tearing apart the latest version, he found the chunk of code above, which contains files that are allegedly the exclusive “building blocks” of Qualcomm radio firmware. That doesn’t tell us anything about a supposed iPhone 5 or iPad 2, unfortunately, as it’s probably just referring to that CDMA chipset in the Verizon iPhone 4… but with the right building blocks, one can craft any number of wonders. Holy reverse KIRF Batman! Meizu M9 ROM ported to HTC EVO 4G

Some industrious hackers have created a port of the Meizu M9 ROM for the HTC EVO 4G, bringing a little KIRF flavor to Sprint’s favorite jumbo phone . The port is still in the developmental stages, but most of the M9 functionality appears to already be working, with only the port from GSM to CDMA and tweaks to screen resolution left to do. After a little spit-shine to make sure the build is stable, EVO owners can finally see what the Meizu M9 fuss is all about without having to actually buy one . Of course, why you’d actually want to do this to your perfectly functional Android phone is a question that may never truly find a legitimate answer. Holy reverse KIRF Batman! Limera1n jailbreaks the iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 4.1, angers dev community and neuters one of our phones (video)

Looking for a jailbreak for your iPod touch or iPhone running iOS 4.1? Your chariot is named limera1n — assuming you’re willing to risk your device on a software developer showdown. The infamous Geohot just upstaged the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team by releasing a reportedly buggy beta exploit of his own, which you can find at our download link immediately below. It only works on Windows at the moment, hacks only official releases and iPhone 3GS isn’t supported right now, and it claims to be an unpatchable, untethered release for those of you who appreciate what those terms mean. As you can imagine, rival developers aren’t terribly happy that Geohot’s back in the limelight. MuscleNerd (of the iPhone Dev Team) claims that limera1n will re-lock iPhones that were unlocked by his team’s ultrasn0w software, and recommends you skip limera1n, but the main reason the iOS hacking community is angry at Geohot is because if more than one exploit is released simultaneously, Apple can fix them both in one fell swoop. By releasing first, Geohot has allegedly forced other teams to decide between the good of iPhone users over the short term (by releasing a different, more stable exploit) or over the long term (by saving their exploit for future use) and so far it looks like both teams have chosen to prolong the fight — the iPhone Dev Team is asking folks to withhold its Shatter exploit, and Chronic Dev Team says it will modify its greenpois0n jailbreak to use Geohot’s hack instead. What a weird, wild world we live in. Update: How might this work on an iPad, given that beta versions of iOS (like 4.2 ) aren’t currently supported? Good question. We’ve struck all references to iPad accordingly, until the powers that be figure it out. Update 2: Video after the break! Also, we’re hearing that some folks have jailbroken their iPads successfully with limera1n, and we personally got it working quickly on a pair of iPhones with iOS 4.1… but one of the two showed no icons upon restart and didn’t regain App Store, Maps and Calendar even after a restore. Be careful, now! Sam Sheffer contributed to this repor t. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Continue reading Limera1n jailbreaks the iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 4.1, angers dev community and neuters one of our phones (video) Limera1n jailbreaks the iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 4.1, angers dev community and neuters one of our phones (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Oct 2010 18:36:00 EST.
