After months of labor and many helping hands, a tenacious modder known as “cvpcs” has succeeded with his efforts to bring CyanogenMod 7 to the Motorola Droid X . While this is still a beta release, fixes are coming swiftly and the developer intends to deliver nightly updates to resolve the outstanding issues — the camera is non-functional, for instance. If you’re willing to take the plunge with this one, you’ll need to revert to Froyo for sake of kernel compatibility (but don’t worry, CM7 is Gingerbread-based). Also, the most recent set of Google apps aren’t working yet, so you’ll need to grab an older release. All the juicy details — along with the CM4DX download — can be found at the source, and we’ve included some helpful guides to get you on the right path. So if you’re feeling wily this weekend and Moto’s Gingerbread isn’t fitting the bill, be sure to thank “cvpcs” for his dedication. Samsung Captivate gets Gingerbread through leaked software update
June 18th, 2011
jedwan It’s been about four months since the Samsung Captivate got a software update , and that was merely to step up from Eclair to Froyo. And while AT&T still hasn’t pushed out an upgrade to Gingerbread, leaked versions of the official software are said to be floating around the big, wide Internet. So far, we’re not seeing much feedback, good or bad, but it should go without saying that you install this at your own risk. If you’re feeling daring or just dubious that AT&T will release this update anytime soon, hit the source links for instructions on how to install the software… and what to do should something go terribly awry. And, as always, do tell us how it goes. Samsung Captivate gets Gingerbread through leaked software update originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 17 Jun 2011 16:19:00 EST. Android Honeycomb has hidden Gingerbread interface, enabled by higher LCD density
May 20th, 2011
admin Google’s already indicated that tablets and smartphones won’t be sharing the same Android build until Ice Cream Sandwich in Q4, though interestingly enough, it turns out that the tablet-friendly Honeycomb actually has Gingerbread’s interface quietly tucked underneath. According to modder Graffix0214 , all you need for making the jump is one simple tweak in a system file: assuming you already have root access, use your preferred method — Pocketables recommends the LCDDensity for Root app — to change the LCD density value to 170 or higher to emulate a smaller, denser display. After a reboot, you should then see some Gingerbread love as demoed by Graffix0214′s video after the break; and likewise, set the value to 160 or lower to roll back. It sure is nice to have an option, eh? HTC Sensation looks to have signed bootloader, custom ROMs look to be bummed
May 15th, 2011
jedwan Did you think maybe HTC would change its ways after locking down the bootloader on the Thunderbolt and Incredible S ? Sorry, no. The upcoming Sensation looks to have been similarly afflicted, with Android Police bringing the bad news that its internals are protected by HTC’s private key. This will definitely prove to be an issue for those looking to run custom ROMs that are clean as a whistle, but something tells us the hackers shall overcome. They usually do . Workaround brings Netflix to more (rooted) Android users
May 14th, 2011
admin We’ve already had some success getting Netflix for Android up and running on an officially unsupported phone (a Droid X ), but those not able to get it to work simply by transferring and installing the .APK now have another option. As some folks on Reddit have discovered, you can apparently just edit a few system settings to make your phone (or Nook Color, for that matter) think it’s actually an HTC G2, which is apparently all it takes to satisfy the Netflix app. It doesn’t work with every phone, of course, but quite a few seem to have had success with it. Unfortunately for some, you’ll also need to first root your phone in order to make those changes, but the steps are fairly simple once you’ve done that. Hit up the link below for all the details, and let us know how it worked out for you in the comments below. Just remember: when in doubt, back up. redsn0w untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 works with 4.3.3, still no iPad 2 support
May 6th, 2011
jedwan Apple released iOS 4.3.3 on Wednesday, but as it did with 4.3.2, neglected to patch the untethered jailbreak exploit in redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 (since updated to rc15). Looks like that’s a hat trick for the iPhone Dev Team . The hack works with most devices (even the Apple TV ), but there’s still no solution for iPad 2 owners — we’re sure that the underground powers that be are hard at work searching for holes that Apple overlooked. Installation instructions remain unchanged, so if you’ve been eager to get your iPhone tracking fix on without bricking your device, grab the latest IPSW and head over to our source link for the download links. CyanogenMod 7 tops 200,000 downloads, celebrations erupt as development goes forward
May 6th, 2011
jedwan Congratulations to the fine developers of CyanogenMod, whose latest aftermarket Android OS, CyanogenMod 7 , has surpassed 200,000 downloads — a huge milestone for this homebrew community. Now supported on 26 devices, the hallmark of this custom ROM comes from its flexible user interface, greater customization options, bonus features and worthwhile performance improvements. While the project gained early notoriety from its dispute with Google, it’s become an increasingly popular solution for those wanting to command their phone (or tablet) as they see fit. The latest revision, 7.0.3, includes numerous fixes and refinements since its 7.0 release, so there’s never been a better time to check it out — in fact, we’re pretty sure the group would love to bring you aboard. Well done everyone, and keep up the good work. Sn0wbreeze brings untethered jailbreak to Verizon iPhone for Windows users
May 3rd, 2011
admin Verizon iPhone owners, your untethered jailbreaking prayers have been answered. Hacker iH8Sn0w updated the Sn0wbreeze tool, adding support for Big Red handsets running iOS 4.2.7 and finally allowing those who have forsaken AT&T to bring the magic of Cydia to their phones without the cumbersome need for tethering . The usual caveats apply: you’ll have to get your hands on a copy of iOS 4.2.7 (just do a little Googling) and there is always a very small chance that something could go horribly wrong and you’ll wind up with a very shiny paperweight. Mac users will have to sit this one out — Sn0wbreeze is a Windows-only affair. Hit up the source link to get your iHack on. Motorola promises unlocked bootloaders for future Android phones? (update)
April 27th, 2011
jedwan Android users have spoken , and maybe, just maybe, Motorola actually heard — AusDroid claims to have a statement direct from the mobile phone manufacturer promising unlocked bootloaders later this year: We completely understand the operator requirement for security to the end user, and as well, want to support the developer communities desire to use these products as a development platform. It is our intention to enable the unlockable/relockable bootloader currently found on Motorola XOOM across our portfolio of devices starting in late 2011, where carriers and operators will allow it. Wonderfully corporate of them to pass the buck to the carriers, no? This quote comes by way of a gentleman who petitioned Moto for just such a thing, mind you, so please take it with a grain of salt, and you’ll be the first to know if we get confirmation from Motorola itself. Update: AusDroid managed to get in touch with Motorola North Asia, and it sounds like we’re looking at the truth — let’s see if Sanjay Jha agrees when he wakes up tomorrow morning.
