Remember when Google Voice assigned a number to your account with no option to port or integrate with Sprint ? Oh how much simpler things were way back in Q1. When those new features first popped up, you were given a 90-day grace period to receive calls and texts to your old number after making a change. Now you can port, integrate, or just flat-out replace your number without sacrificing those old digits. After making the switch, head to the Settings tab in GV, then click “make permanent” within 90 days to keep the old number. You’ll be billed for a one-time $20 “administration charge” (hey, computers need to get paid, too), but you’ll forever be able to receive calls and texts sent to both, though outgoing calls and texts will only appear to be coming from the replacement — so you’ll still need to give your contacts a heads up after making the swap. We’re always happy to see Google Voice add new features — especially when they actually work — so if you’re ready to try your hand at phone number polygamy, get that credit card out and head over to GV. Google and Sprint respond to Google Voice integration issues
May 7th, 2011
jedwan You may recall from yesterday that early adopters were having a variety of issues after activating (or attempting to activate) Sprint’s new Google Voice integration feature. Well, a full day has passed, and we’ve had several calls with GV lead Vincent Paquet as well as Brian Smith, Sprint’s director of product development. Both executives have said that their respective companies have been hard at work on resolutions to each of the issues we outlined Thursday night, and some customers we spoke to yesterday are now back online. Jump past the break for a quick summary of what’s been fixed, and what remains on the to-do list. Google Voice for Sprint hands-on (video)
March 27th, 2011
jedwan Remember that Google Voice integration for Sprint we mentioned recently ? Today at CTIA we got to see it in action, and it promises to take us one step closer to our robot overlords — well, those of us who are Sprint customers, anyway. The most exciting feature is that the integration works with almost any Sprint number and device, and is not limited to just smartphones or the newly minted Nexus S 4G . Basically, you can pick your Sprint number or your Google Voice number to be your mobile number, and switch between them if necessary. Either way, this is the number that appears on other people’s phones when you call them, and you still benefit from all the Google Voice perks. See it for yourself in our video after the break. Official Google Voice app for iPhone hits the App Store
November 17th, 2010
admin A few weeks after third-party apps started filtering in , Google’s launched its own Google Voice app for the iPhone, and it looks to have all the most important features: call and text support, push notifications, and voicemail access (including transcriptions). It’s available right now — US only at the moment — on iPhones with iOS 3.1 or higher as long as you’ve got a valid Google Voice account set up… so get to it. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Note: For some reason, you need to search the App Store for “googlevoice,” not “google voice.” Weird, we know. Google Voice comes to iPhone and webOS, as a web app
January 26th, 2010
jedwan FCC investigation be damned, Google has finally managed to bypass the App Store and release Google Voice to the iPhone (and webOS, too) the same way it pulled off Latitude , i.e. via a HTML5-based web app. According to Senior Product Manager Vincent Paquet, it should work with any HTML5-compliant device, although the formatting at this point has been tailored to Apple and Palm’s platforms. So here’s how it works: much like with its mobile Gmail site, the app caches your contacts list in a browser page. All the usual GV functionality is there, writing SMS messages, checking your inbox, and even listening to voicemails (although that latter functionality wasn’t working for us yet in our trials). Placing phone calls is an interesting trick: as pictured above, after you choose the recipient, the app prompts you to call one of Google’s local numbers via the native dialer — even for international calls, hence the lower rates by paying through Google. The recipient will see your proper GV digits, and upside with this method is you’ll still be able to utilize call waiting and background usage. The catch, of course, is a call history littered with random numbers. It’s not a perfect solution by any means — if anything, take solace in an assortment of home screen icons for each section of the app — but it’s probably the best we’re gonna get for the time being. The page should be up and running later today, so if you’re anxious, direct your mobile browser to voice.google.com and just keep hitting refresh. Google Voice app GV Mobile ported to jailbroken iPhones, web app version in the works
July 28th, 2009
jedwan Filed under: Handsets , Apple , iPhone OS So well-mannered, straight-laced iPhone users got a pretty big slap in the face yesterday by way of Apple’s (and AT&T’s, no doubt) total Google Voice rejection . Looks like jailbreakers are picking up the pieces, as GV Mobile developer Sean Kovacs — whose app was in the iTunes store for some time before being yanked yesterday — has ported the Voice client over to Cydia free of charge, although donations are gladly accepted. Even more interesting, but less concrete, Kovacs said he was already working on a web app version, possibly for submission to Palm’s app catalog. No word on the fate of GVdialer, an app that was also unceremoniously pulled, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it followed in similar footsteps. Google Voice iPhone app rejected, current GV apps lose connection with iTunes
July 28th, 2009
jedwan Filed under: Handsets , ATT , Apple , iPhone OS Perhaps the big G spoke too soon when it said its new Google Voice service was coming to iPhone. First, GV Mobile developer Sean Kovacs relays a phone call he had with Apple where he was notified of his app being removed from the iTunes store for duplicating built-in iPhone features — an app that was originally and purportedly approved by Phil Schiller himself. Next out the door was GVdialer, and if you thought that was all bad, now comes word that Google’s official Voice app was flat-out rejected by Cupertino. Now it’s hard to say with certainty who’s to blame for these app rejections, but a good many fingers are pointing to the cellular carriers — and given AT&T’s previous statements about the SlingPlayer app , it’s hard to argue with that. For its part, the company hinted at finding a workaround via web apps, much like they did when Apple gave Latitude a cold shoulder — but doesn’t that feel just a little 2007 ? Google Voice apps now live on Android and BlackBerry, iPhone en route
July 15th, 2009
jedwan Filed under: Software , RIM , Apple , iPhone OS , Android , BlackBerry OS There have been pretty decent unofficial hacks to get Google Voice fully functional on a variety of mobile devices for a while now, but Google’s finally taking the next logical step in its world domination strategy by releasing totally 100-percent legit first-party apps for a couple key platforms today — BlackBerry and, of course, its own Android. As you might expect, the app lets you make calls and send texts through your Google Voice number (great for taking advantage of its mega-low international rates) and integrates with the service’s excellent visual voicemail and voice transcription service. iPhone is on the way, but for now, the BlackBerry build should be hitting a pretty wide, interested demographic — now about those Google Voice invites, eh? Hack: use Google Voice to add visual voicemail to your G1, Dream, or Magic
June 29th, 2009
jedwan Filed under: Features , Software , Android With home screen widgets, an on-screen keyboard, great notification management, and hands-down the best Gmail experience of any platform, Android 1.5 finally makes it easy (or easier, anyway) to love Google’s foray into the mobile world. Of course, if you’re coming from an iPhone — as some users inevitably will be — there are a few features that’ll be sorely missed as you make the transition.
