Cincinnati Bell brings Froyo to Milestone XT720, holds your hand through rooting process

Rooting is the dark side of the Android platform. It opens your phone up to a world of unsanctioned opportunities and typically has carriers swatting you back with illegal network usage fees. So you’ll understand how bizarre it is that Cincinnati Bell is offering Milestone XT720 users software and an instructional video how-to that boots Eclair out, for its Froyo successor. Making use of the widely-popular SuperOneClick app, intrepid owners will be walked through the usual root, back-up and ROM-flashing steps. But the regional carrier’s no dummy as the procedure ends with users unrooting their devices, freeing the network from unwanted congestion and reducing the risk of a bricked phone. Customers of this Ohio-based provider should check the source for a forbidden peek into Android’s underbelly. Tag Heuer outs $6,700 Link Phone for those who like alligator skin with their Froyo (video)

As far as most of us are concerned, if we’re going to pay a lot for a phone — you know, like, $350 on contract — it had better come with the works. We’re talking a qHD display, dual-core processor, 8 megapixel camera with 1080p recording, NFC, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a 4G radio, to boot. If you’re someone who buys things made by Tag Heuer , you’ve got different priorities. The company just introduced the Link Phone, a darling clunker of a handset festooned with steel, 18K rose gold, or titanium, topped off with leather, alligator- and lizard-skin, rubber, and diamond accents — a medley that’ll set you back no less than €4,700 ($6,712). What’s that you say? You want specs ? The Link, named after the Swiss outfit’s storied watch line, runs Android 2.2 — a clear step up from its feature phone predecessor . Other ho-hum features include the 3.5-inch (800 x 480) display, 5 megapixel autofocus camera, 256MB internal memory, an 8GB memory card, 1400 mAh battery, and EDGE / HSUPA connectivity. Tag Heuer also says it’ll be particularly durable, though it’s coming up short on specifics. Somehow, though, we don’t think it will survive when we accidentally drop it in our gold-plated toilet. Update: Tag Heuer might not have the chops to build a highly spec’d phone, but it sure knows how to root one. As a tipster pointed out, if you pause the video at 1:18 you’ll see Superuser in the app menu — a telltale sign of hacking if ever there was one. Freeze frame after the break. [Thanks, Sasika!] Continue reading Tag Heuer outs $6,700 Link Phone for those who like alligator skin with their Froyo (video) Tag Heuer outs $6,700 Link Phone for those who like alligator skin with their Froyo (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Jun 2011 10:18:00 EST. Motorola Triumph release date leaked by ‘People’ magazine, coming to Virgin on July 19th

You’ve seen many views of the Motorola Triumph in our recent hands-on segment , but perhaps no angle is so tempting as the release date itself. Fortunately, that tidbit arrives courtesy People’s current issue, where Virgin Mobile’s July 19th release date is outed on page 77 — in the StyleWatch Concierge section, if you just have to know . Given the “379 hot summer looks” to fawn over, it’s easy to overlook this Blur-less handset , but the proof awaits at your local news stand. Sadly, we’re still waiting on pricing for this newcomer, but perhaps it’ll show in the next edition of The Economist , no? Motorola Triumph for Virgin Mobile hands-on (video)

We’re live here at Motorola / Sprint’s press event in New York City, and while most of the folks are swarming around the newly minted Photon 4G , we wanted to give some love to the Motorola Triumph , the first Moto handset to land on Virgin Mobile’s network. While the 4.1-inch, Froyo-packing phone and its 2GB of storage might seem ho-hum to spec junkies, it’s a shockingly solid option for a prepaid carrier. And it comes Motoblur-free! How many Photon 4Gs have that to say for themselves? Take a stroll past the break for a tour, and see why we think the Triumph could actually be a pretty solid score for those who detest strings and fine print. Samsung Galaxy Pro review

In a world of smartphones with ever-increasing screen sizes and disappearing physical keyboards, the candybar form factor is becoming rarer and rarer. There are only a handful of Android devices with a physical keyboard, like the Droid Pro , Samsung Replenish , and Motorola Charm . Samsung has looked to fill in this under-saturated market segment with the Galaxy Pro, a QWERTY device that not only mimics the classic BlackBerry form factor, but throws in Froyo and a 2.8-inch touchscreen for kicks. It’s not available in the US just yet, but we still took the UK version for a spin to determine if the Galaxy Pro was finally worth ditching the BlackBerry. How manageable is Android on such a small screen with landscape orientation? Read on past the break and find out. MOPS Shadow T800 brings analog joystick, hearts & spades to Android

Sure, the Xperia Play may have that slick gamepad slider, shoulder buttons, and Sony Playstation’s official blessing, but can it hold its own against the Shadow’s analog pad? Probably, because despite the new contender’s self described status of a “mobile Playstation,” its lack of shoulder buttons won’t help it play any of those Xperia-exclusive PSone games it can’t download. Still, besides being known as the “Phantom of the Opera” phone (thanks, Google Translate), this MOPS Shadow T800 has a lot going for it. This analog Android packs a Froyo-powered 806MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, front and rear 5 megapixel and 0.3 megapixel cameras, respectively, a 3.5 inch 320 x 480 touchscreen, and a whole mess of standard GPS, Bluetooth, and 3G radios. Not enough? Okay, fine; the device also comes pre-loaded with a handful of emulators, as well as a legit copy of Assassin’s Creed. Besides, who doesn’t want a phone with card-suit face buttons? Bragging rights will set you back 2680 yuan ($410), assuming you’re in China when this thing launches later this month.
