Nokia shutters online and retail stores in UK, US web store

Nokia will be entering Q3 free of any direct-to-consumer sales channels in the US and UK. The Finnish smartphone maker shuttered its remaining UK retail stores earlier this month (with the exception of Heathrow Airport, which remains open), and also discontinued sales on its US and UK online stores — joining France, Spain, and The Netherlands, which all went offline last month . We spoke to a former Nokia UK retail employee, who cited poor marketing, high prices, slowing traffic and a high product return rate as a few of the reasons that the stores closed — returns of the N8 and E7 dominated other handsets, with customers complaining of device crashes and corruption, hardware failures, and usability issues. He reports that the stores were also only able to sell devices on Vodafone and T-Mobile, and only Vodafone allowed customers to upgrade in a Nokia store. The majority of customers came into the store for support, rather than to make a purchase. “The last two months were particularly quiet. Even if the shopping centre was busy, the Nokia store would have perhaps no more than 30 people through the door a day, usually for technical assistance. And that was that, all stores were closed abruptly on June 20th.” We imagine pricing played a large role in the decision to close the UK and US online stores, just as it did with UK retail and online stores in other countries. Both country’s online stores have been replaced with a closure notice, with the US store directing customers to Amazon, and the UK store referring visitors to eight retail partners, instead. France to auction off 4G spectrum, carriers ready to get their bid on

If you have a few billion euros hiding in your couch cushion and you’ve always dreamed of owning a coveted sect of airspace, might we suggest a 4G auction ? France has some 18 blocks of high-speed spectrum up for grabs this September in the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands, and wants at least 2.5 billion euros ($3.6b) in exchange for the whole enchilada. Expensive as it may seem, there’s no reason to believe it shouldn’t easily surpass that amount; the biggest competitors are definitely not lightweights by any stretch of the imagination, and — as this will be the last of such spectrum to be sold for at least ten years — we know each contender will be on its A-game. Fortunately the government has regulated the whole affair to keep spectrum-hogging to a minimum: no company can buy more than half of the “beachfront” 800MHz band, and no more than 15MHz of the 2.6GHz (out of 70MHz available). The most awe-inspiring regulation, however, is that victors will be required to build out their 4G networks in rural zones, ensuring that 90 percent of the population will have access to high-speed mobile broadband within 12 years. Could the US government learn a few things from this process? T-Mobile and Orange get cozy, go shopping together

Following a good lean in their office chairs, decision-makers from Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom have made good on their February announcement to explore network sharing strategies, revealing they will combine their purchasing in a 50 / 50 joint venture. Buyers from Bonn and Paris will now collaborate on the procurement of consumer devices, network equipment, service platforms and IT infrastructure, with the companies expecting to save €1.3 billion from their efforts. They foresee this coordination creating more effective relations with suppliers, and benefiting customers through harmonized technology across networks. While the deal still needs regulatory approval, this isn’t the first time the operators have gotten friendly, having previously merged T-Mobile and Orange in the UK. There’s nothing like cooperation to get an edge on the competition, right? Get the full PR after the break. Samsung to release two Bada 2.0 handsets with NFC in Q4, software update in July?

Some of you Samsungers are probably anticipating the snazzy Wave 578 due out in May or June outside the US, but the sad news is it won’t be shipped with the upcoming Bada 2.0 OS. Fret not, though, as Russian blog Bada World claims to have obtained some juicy details that’ll cheer up Bada fanatics. The above slide — apparently sourced from a Samsung France conference from a few days ago — lists a pair of new but unnamed handsets that’ll pack the new software, along with 7.2Mbps HSDPA, Bluetooth 3.0, and the seemingly trendsetting NFC . The difference between these two phones? One of them appears to be the flagship Bada 2.0 model, which expects a September launch with a 3.65-inch HVGA display, a 5 megapixel main camera, plus a VGA secondary camera. The second device will follow a month later, sporting a smaller 3.14-inch QVGA screen and just a 3 megapixel imager. In related news, TNW India reports that Bada 2.0 will be “first experienced in India” around July, though no hardware is mentioned here. This could imply that existing Bada users in India — where Samsung’s R&D develops 30 percent of Bada applications — may be one of the first to obtain the 2.0 update, and it shouldn’t be long before the rest of the world get their share of this piping hot pie. Anyhow, be rest assured that we’ll keep our eyes peeled open for more Bada 2.0 news — it’ll be interesting to see where Samsung’s next big push will take us. Palm Pre 2 hits FCC in CDMA and North American GSM flavors

So the Pre 2 has been announced for SFR in France and Verizon in the States, along with an unlocked model for developers… but so far, we’d only seen one of the three in the FCC. Well, here are the other two: on the left, the P102EWW, and on the right, the P102UNA. Palm’s naming convention is a little strange, so it probably bears explaining again — the “P102″ tells you that it’s a Pre 2, while “EWW” indicates CDMA and “UNA” indicates North American GSM / UMTS. From the UNA model’s filing, it would seem there isn’t any AWS capability on board, so users of T-Mobile, WIND , Mobilicity , and the like are going to have to plod along at 2G speeds if they want to play ball. You know, Murphy’s Law and all. Palm Pre 2 hits FCC in CDMA and North American GSM flavors originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 19 Oct 2010 21:34:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds .
