Yesterday’s revelation that Verizon may soon be enforcing usage-based data plans came as a slap in the face to many, but there may be at least one speck of sunlight shining through the dark clouds above. Screenshots appeared today, purportedly from employee communications, that would go a long way toward assuaging our worst nightmares: Verizon is indeed planning to mirror AT&T’s policy of letting current customers hang onto their grandfathered data plans — even when renewing contracts. It’s probably best to keep your fingers crossed, but we understand if your hands are busy clutching those old plans as if your life depended on it. Verizon’s tiered data plans won’t affect grandfathered customers after all? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 18:08:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Permalink

Sprint network is down in some areas, SMS and voice call services affected (updated)
May 18th, 2011
jedwan Uh oh, according to the handful of tips we’ve received, it appears that Sprint is currently having some technical problems on its cellular network in some states. Specifically, customers aren’t having much luck with sending text messages, while some are also not able to make voice calls. But don’t worry, the carrier’s certainly aware of this issue and is already working on a fix, so hang tight and let your fingers take a break — we’ll let you know when things are up and running again. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Update: Here’s a statement we got from Sprint: “We did have some disruption to Sprint SMS traffic earlier tonight, but it wasn’t a complete disruption — we lost partial capacity for about an hour. Engineers immediately began rerouting traffic and after about an hour things went back to normal. There is no significant voice disruption anywhere in the US except for a small part of our Sprint network in the Washington, DC area. That has since been resolved and had no relation to the SMS disruption.” Sprint network is down in some areas, SMS and voice call services affected (updated) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 17 May 2011 22:36:00 EST. US Cellular snatches up Samsung’s Gem (while it’s still mildly warm)
April 6th, 2011
admin Proving not all gems are destined for swap meets and barter fairs, US Cellular introduced its own semi-precious stone: the Samsung Gem. While previously available on Alltel with Android 2.1, this entry-level candybar has been revitalized (somewhat) by the nation’s sixth largest carrier, who’s now serving up Froyo and passing it off as new. Up front, we find a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen at 400 x 240 pixels, along with standard accoutrements such as its 3.2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth and WiFi. Priced at $29.99 (after $80 mail-in rebate), the Gem positions itself alongside USCC’s expansive lineup of budget-friendly Android phones, including the Samsung Acclaim, LG Optimus U and HTC Desire. Readers will note Samsung’s TouchWiz interface (as seen on Alltel’s Gem) is absent here. Instead, users are given a near-vanilla helping of 2.2, with notable customizations including seven home screens, and Swype — for those who just can’t seem to part their fingers from the screen. Nokia sticks to its stylus roots, offers telescopic SU-36 for capacitive screens
May 1st, 2010
jedwan You know what, we’re not gonna make that joke . You can, but we’ll just move right along to the meat of this story — Nokia has listed a telescopic stylus for capacitive screens, the SU-36, which seems to have come out right alongside the N8 to serve as its Symbian^3 assistant. Compatible with the N8, X6 , and any other phone with a proper touchscreen on it, this retractable accessory will substitute your fingers when they are either too cold or too imprecise to do the job themselves. It’s not yet been priced or made available, but you’ll be fine using that sausage stylus for another few weeks, won’t ya?
