EVO 3D at the FCC redux: now with AWS 3G (update)
July 2nd, 2011
jedwan Well, what have we here? Another HTC EVO 3D , aka the PG86300, has landed on the FCC’s doorstep — only this time it’s packing radios similar to those seen in the phone’s European edition . This one works on the 1700MHz AWS band, so it appears could be destined for duty in the pockets of T-Mobile’s magenta-clad masses, though we can’t say for sure. However, now that the government’s decreed this EVO’s electronics won’t fry our brains, it shouldn’t be be long before we find out. Update: This FCC filing is most likely for the European EVO 3G, which, like the European Sensation and Flyer, features a tri-band 3G (HSPA+) radio with 2100 / 1700 (AWS) and 900MHz as well as a quadband 2G radio. This means you’ll possibly be able to import the handset unlocked from Europe and use it with 3G on carriers like T-Mobile USA or Wind in Canada. Sorry, AT&T customers, no 3G soup for you! HTC EVO 3D landing in Europe next month, two-stage shutter button and all
June 28th, 2011
admin Up till now, the ranks of 3D-capable smartphones were neatly organized by territory: Japan had the Sharp Aquos SH-12C , the US had the HTC EVO 3D , and Europe had the LG Optimus 3D . Now it’s all getting a tiny bit messier (and more competitive!) with HTC’s announcement that the EVO 3D has boarded a transatlantic liner and is en route to the green shores of Europa. Available “broadly” across the old continent, this Android 2.3 handset touts a 4.3-inch display with qHD (540 x 960) resolution and an added parallax barrier layer that allows it to deliver a glasses-free 3D effect. We call it an effect because real 3D it ain’t, but at least it’ll allow you to review the three-dimensional pics you snap with the included pair of 5 megapixel autofocus cameras. There’s also a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon purring within for the performance obsessives and a generous 1730mAh battery — perhaps the biggest advantage that we can see for this phone over the similarly specced (but 3D-less) Sensation . Jump past the break for the full spec sheet and PR or hit up our review to learn just how awesome the EVO 3D’s shutter button really is. Dutch net neutrality first in EU, mobile operators side-eye KPN
June 23rd, 2011
admin KPN may have shot itself in the foot, but the Dutch parliament certainly helped pull the trigger. Following a very public brag earlier this year that the operator was using deep packet inspection to throttle service and charge users for unintended network usage comes a massive industry buzz kill in the form of mobile net neutrality legislation. Pending approval by the Senate, wireless network operators in the Netherlands will no longer be able to shiv customers for using that nifty rival messaging, or VoIP service of their choice — Skype and Whatsapp , for starters. The country’s telcos put on their lobbying best to whine the usual lines about higher consumer prices, and shaky quality assurance, but the Dutch government called that bluff. Though the ruling bans traffic discrimination, it doesn’t preclude tricksier tiered data pricing — sneaky little carriers. While this win is a first for Europe , OG credit goes to Chile for paving the way . Not yet banned in the Netherlands? Amazing airports, tulips, and cheese wheels. Nokia Windows Phones will launch in six European nations first, Finland not among them
June 17th, 2011
jedwan Nokia VP Victor Saeijs has this week disclosed the six launch markets for the vanguard devices born out of the Microsoft-Nokia partnership. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and the UK will all count themselves as hosts to Nokia’s Windows Phone debut , but the company’s mother nation of Finland has strangely been left out in the cold. Knowing Nokia, there’s no doubt that once the WP7 handsets are ready they’ll find themselves swiftly available worldwide, but if you care to be among the very first to own one, you’ll be wanting to visit Europe’s western shores — preferably some time before the year’s through, as Mr. Saeijs also reaffirmed that there will indeed be a Nokia Windows Phone coming out in 2011.
