Nokia’s Mary McDowell announced the company’s third dual-SIM device, the C2-03, at CommunicAsia. It’s a portrait slider with a 320 x 240 touchscreen display paired with the company’s Touch and Type interface. Like the C2-00 , it’s based on S40 and supports Easy Swap — a handy feature that lets users hot swap their SIMs. Additionally, the phone sports a new version of Nokia’s web browser that compresses data up to 90 percent, and Nokia Maps for Series 40 — which provides location search and routing while offline. Amazingly, standby time is rated at a hearty 400 hours, and while the built-in memory is somewhat paltry (10MB), the storage can be expanded up to 32GB. It’s expected to be released in Q3 for €77, and will roll out across India, China, the south-east Asian-Pacific region, Eurasia, the middle east, and Africa. The C2-02, a single-SIM variant will debut alongside the more intriguing sibling, but we know you’re most interested in the dual-SIM darling, so hop past the break for an extended peek. EVO Shift 4G owners start manually upgrading to Gingerbread
June 19th, 2011
admin Right on schedule , EVO Shift 4G owners should be able to step on up to Android 2.3. Yesterday, an anonymous tipster gave us a heads up that the upgrade was nigh, and indeed, we’re seeing reports that people are manually downloading the update, which includes not just Gingerbread, but Swype , a downloads application, and a fix for apps that haven’t been able to stream media. In fact, we’ve heard some folks say they received the update last night, when we had heard it was scheduled to drop today. If for some reason you want to wait until Sprint pushes the update to you, that should happen on Monday. As always, proceed with caution and let us know how it goes. HTC 7 Pro continues its tour of smaller carriers, launches on Cellular South for $200
June 19th, 2011
jedwan Four months after launching on Sprint under the moniker HTC Arrive, it looks like the HTC 7 Pro is making the rounds among smaller carriers: earlier this week it hit US Cellular, and starting today you can also pick one up through Cellular South for $199.99 with a two-year contract and a $50 main-in reabte. To recap, the 7 Pro is a full tilt-up QWERTY slider with a 3.6-inch WVGA display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5 megapixel camera, and 16GB of storage. So is it worth the $200? That all depends on how long you’ve been holding out for Microsoft’s slick Metro UI — the 7 Pro is, after all, the only WP7 device you can buy through Cellular South. Full press release after the break. Nokia outs 1GHz Series 40 handset with ClearBlack display
June 19th, 2011
admin According to Nokia’s Manager of Marketing Services in Argentina, an S40-based mobile phone with a 1GHz processor and ClearBlack display is coming — and for our part, we’re hoping to see it next week at Nokia Connection 2011 in Singapore. There, company leaders (including the outspoken CEO himself ), will debut new products aimed at emerging markets. Granted, there’s nothing definitive to connect the dots, but given the operating system, it would make perfect sense to get a glimpse at this mystery device — along with the Nokia C2-06 — at next week’s conference. The Argentina-based tweets that originally outed this handset have been snuffed, but they’ve been preserved in the form of a retweet and screen caps, letting this casual mistake ripple through the web. Don’t feel too bad, Nokia… as mobile fanatics, we’re big fans of the unintended reveal. Now, how about outing those sweet Mangoes ? LG C729 Android phone for T-Mobile clears the FCC, packs a low-res display
June 17th, 2011
admin Oftentimes, when phones hit the FCC, they raise more questions than they answer. Case in point: the LG C729, a handset that just cleared the Commission, revealing little more than the fact that it will run on T-Mobile’s 1700MHz spectrum. Other than the cellular / PCS, GSM / GPRS / EDGE, and AWS WCDMA / HSPA connectivity, we know it has Bluetooth and WLAN radios. And that’s all you can squeeze out of the report, since LG asked the FCC to keep the test manual and any photos under wraps, as companies with their trade secrets are wont to do. But , as PocketNow reports, the user agent profile tells a fuller story, with nods to a some version of Android as the OS, and a low-resolution 320 x 480 display. So far, word on the street is that LG will launch two Android handsets on T-Mobile this fall, including the Maxx and the Maxx Q, which will have a QWERTY keyboard. So what say you, readers? Just what is this thing? LG C729 Android phone for T-Mobile clears the FCC, packs a low-res display originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 21:52:00 EST. T-Mobile doubles speed in 42 of its HSPA+ 4G markets
June 16th, 2011
admin T-Mobile’s choice of fast just got doubly faster in 42 — clever, right? 42 new markets for its 42Mbps service — of its HSPA+ markets. With this addition the tally for the faster service now stands at 97 centers — when added to the 55 we saw launched back in May. To answer the question about how fast, T-Mobile’s stating that average download speeds approach 10Mbps with a purported peak of 27Mbps on its Rocket 3.0 sticks. So if you’re lucky enough to call Albuquerque, San Diego, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, or any of the other 38 new spots home, you’re golden — and maybe reading this a little quicker than that fella next to you. If you’ve missed this ship, fear not, this expansion won’t be over anytime soon as T-Mob has it has its sights set on covering 190 million users by mid-year. Full PR is just a click away. Verizon updates Fascinate to improve calls and… well, updates of course
June 16th, 2011
jedwan It seems the Samsung Fascinate is receiving another update from Verizon — though minor in comparison to this delicious serving of Froyo — and this time it’s targeting the update process itself. Once you finish pulling in nearly 100MB over Big Red’s network, version ED04 promises to improve the delivery of OTA updates — a blessing if you’ve ever experienced a bricked install. Additionally, missed opportunities will be minimized thanks to a fix that sharpens the phone’s ability to receive inbound calls. Unfortunately, this also means no excuses for “missing” that call from your employer, so you’d best keep that last bit under wraps. It’ll be our secret. HTC’s ChaCha shuffles its way through the FCC’s clutches with support for AT&T 3G
June 16th, 2011
admin We know you’ve all been dreaming of the HTC ChaCha ‘s potential launch on AT&T — well, okay, maybe not, but we’re sure a good handful are for sure — and if you’re lucky, that day could be soon given today’s FCC blessing. In case it’s slipped your mind, HTC’s ChaCha was officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress this year with a 600MHz CPU — that’s been bumped to 800MHz since we first saw it — a very winsome and useful QWERTY keypad, a cute little dedicated Facebook button, and of course AT&T 3G bands are now on tap. Sadly, while the FCC does reveal test results, interesting photos of labs studded with foam cones, and even device sticker placement, they don’t tell us when a device will launch or what it’ll ultimately cost. All that good stuff will be hand delivered to you by us, so keep an eye out and we’ll let you know the whole story as soon as we do.
