Nokia outs 1GHz Series 40 handset with ClearBlack display
June 19th, 2011
admin According to Nokia’s Manager of Marketing Services in Argentina, an S40-based mobile phone with a 1GHz processor and ClearBlack display is coming — and for our part, we’re hoping to see it next week at Nokia Connection 2011 in Singapore. There, company leaders (including the outspoken CEO himself ), will debut new products aimed at emerging markets. Granted, there’s nothing definitive to connect the dots, but given the operating system, it would make perfect sense to get a glimpse at this mystery device — along with the Nokia C2-06 — at next week’s conference. The Argentina-based tweets that originally outed this handset have been snuffed, but they’ve been preserved in the form of a retweet and screen caps, letting this casual mistake ripple through the web. Don’t feel too bad, Nokia… as mobile fanatics, we’re big fans of the unintended reveal. Now, how about outing those sweet Mangoes ? KDDI haptic smartphone prototype promises up to seven layers of touch, only shows off two
May 26th, 2011
jedwan Ah, another possibly vaporous, yet intriguing addition to a long line of haptic patents and prototypes . Today’s offering: a KDDI smartphone mockup (utilizing Kyocera display technology) promising to render sensation through multiple layers of applied touchscreen pressure. Imagine depressing a camera shutter on a touchscreen, and you’ve got the idea. KDDI only had a screen sporting two haptic layers on hand when they demoed the prototype at Wireless Japan this week, but Kyocera reportedly told Akihabara News that the technology is capable of up to seven layers of tantalizing touch. Neat. Maybe we’ll get a few authentic haptic touchscreens on the market and do away with all the vibrational fakery we’ve been seeing. iPhone 5 may feature curved glass screen, continue iPod nano legacy
May 23rd, 2011
jedwan DigiTimes has been canvassing its manufacturing industry sources again, and today it’s managed to extract some intel regarding Apple’s typically secretive supply chain. Steve Jobs’ team are said to have purchased between 200 and 300 glass-cutting machines, specifically in order to use them to slice up curved glass display covers for the iPhone 5 . This move has apparently been in an effort to accelerate production, with glass makers reportedly showing a reluctance to buy the machinery themselves due to its prohibitive cost. Lest you think this sense of urgency might accelerate the iPhone 5 from its earlier-rumored September launch , DigiTimes also reports that yields of curved glass are not yet good enough to start using said fancy machines. So the iPhone may be headed for the same curvacious look as we’ve already seen on Dell’s Venue and HTC’s Sensation (or maybe even the concavity of the Nexus S ), but as is Apple’s wont, it looks like that will be done with a tailor-made, custom solution. At least those Cupertino designers have a couple of generations of curved iPod nano screens under their belt, giving them a good idea of how to handle the atypical glass frontage. Now if we could just have a good idea of when this phone will actually be on sale… iPhone 5 may feature curved glass screen, continue iPod nano legacy originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 May 2011 02:27:00 EST. Toshiba declares victory in pixel density war: 367ppi coming to a phone this year (video)
May 18th, 2011
admin We got the lowdown on Toshiba’s latest four-inch LCD a couple of days ago, and today at SID 2011 we got up close and personal with the pixel-packed display. It’s one thing to read about a 367ppi screen that shows native 720p video, and it’s quite another to experience it in person. We can report that it is, in fact, as awesome as it sounds — onscreen images were clear, crisp, and chromatically brilliant. Pixel density enthusiasts will also be happy to hear that Toshiba confirmed the display will make it to market this year. Of course, the rep wouldn’t tell us which phone will take the iPhone 4′s crown as the ppi champ, though we imagine it’ll be something powered by little green bots. See the new king in action in the video after the break. Nokia X7 and E6 hop an early flight to Germany for pre-order delights
May 13th, 2011
admin If Nokia’s X7 entertainment handset overwhelms you with a fluttery sensation, then you may consider grabbing one on pre-order, where it retails in Germany and Portugal for €459 and €489 respectively. Meanwhile, if the X7′s 4-inch, 640 x 360 display has you begging for greater pixel density, then also up for reservation in Deutschland is Nokia’s E6 QWERTY phone , featuring a 2.46-inch, 326ppi screen that goes toe-to-toe with Apple’s Retina Display . While the display size isn’t stellar, it’s one way to measure the cost of a physical keyboard — the other method is €429. Either way, if you’re hoping to ride Symbian’s wave to the very end , these two handsets will go kilometers toward actualizing that dream.
