Nokia and Accenture seal Symbian handover deal

The Is have been dotted, the Ts have been crossed with a flourish, and pretty soon Nokia will have very little indeed to do with its formerly beloved Symbian OS. Oh sure, the company promises to keep it going with such standout devices as the Oro , but responsibility for developing and supporting Symbian is being wholly handed over to Accenture , along with 2,800 employees. When announced back in April, the deal called for 3,000 Nokia worker bees to make the jump over, so we suspect a few more (hopefully voluntary) redundancies are making up the difference with the new number. Now that everything’s been finalized, you can expect the switchover to take place in “the early part of October.” Accenture promises to care for its ailing patient through 2016, after which point even the most die-hard of fans will have to make the switch to a mobile OS from the 21st century. Full PR after the break. Adobe AIR 2.7 brings improved speed to iOS, cordial installation to Android (video)

Adobe AIR 2.7 may be a sad joke for Linux users , but it’s likely to be a true zinger for the mobile crowd. Take iOS, where the runtime now delivers noticeably faster performance, along with render speeds that are up to four times faster in CPU mode — quite a punchline, if you ask us. For those on the Android side of the fence, you now have the option to install AIR to your device’s SD card (and thus, make room for less considerate applications). Sadly, there’s no monumental leaps in speed for Google’s users, but you’re getting used to this , right? For a quick peek of what the Apple constituency can expect, you’ll find a video after the break with two iPads — one running 2.6, the other featuring 2.7 — and the difference is full of droll amusement. HTC pulls a 180, now says Gingerbread is coming to Desire

So, here’s the tally: as of June 14th, there’s just ” not enough memory ” in the Desire for Gingerbread to run properly. As of the 15th, however, there is. We won’t pretend to understand what changed so drastically in the past 24 hours, but what is clear is that the aforesaid handset maker is listening to its most demanding of users. While it’s safe to assume that the Average Joe (or Jane) wouldn’t be able to recognize the difference between Android 2.2 and 2.3, folks clamoring for the update seem to have coerced the company to make things work. In other words, it looks like the update is back on… now it’s just a matter of making it run well . Kudos HTC, and godspeed.
