Skype 2.0 brings two-way video calling to Nexus S, Desire S, Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro

The latest update to Skype’s Android application has just been rolled out and a big part of its goodie delivery is two-way video calling. Only a quartet of phones are supported right now: Google’s own Nexus S, HTC’s Desire S, and the Xperia Neo and Pro from Sony Ericsson, all handsets that shipped with Android 2.3 installed. We suspect the rest of the Android world won’t be far behind — Thunderbolt users will surely be wondering why they’re not included in this first batch — but for now it’s just that fearsome foursome. Also included in Skype v2.0.0.45 is a UI overhaul and support for SMS messaging, neither of which suffers from any handset restrictions. Hit up the Android Market on your phone (the web Market still lists version 1) to get at the latest software. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Update: We’ve just spent a little quality time with Skype 2.0 and its newfangled video calling. Notably, we couldn’t get a video call to work between the Xperia Neo and a desktop version of Skype — it was only possible to get video when calling between the Neo and the similarly compatible HTC Desire S. Once we did establish a connection, though, frame rates were smooth and buttery and the UI is simple and unintrusive yet offers quite a few functions. You can mute the call, choose between the front- or rear-facing camera, reposition the small window that shows your video feed anywhere on the screen, or — with a double tap upon that window — switch focus so that your own video output dominates the screen and your buddy’s feed is relocated to the smaller preview. It’s a great looking implementation of video calling, though we did only test it over WiFi, 3G performance may be materially worse. Update 2: Skype’s press release and demo video can now be found after the break. Telstra will scrap Sense UI to make room for Gingerbread on the HTC Desire

What’s this we spy in the dusty depths of a Telstra software update page? A little sentence that displays some crowd-pleasing logic in bringing Android 2.3 to the hoary old Desire. HTC originally told us the handset had insufficient memory to run Gingerbread, and so would be excluded from the update. Then it did a 180-flip and said the Desire would be getting Gingerbread after all, but with the sacrifice of some memory-hogging apps. But now Aussie Telstra has opted for arguably the smartest alternative: prepare a special update that kicks HTC’s Sense UI out of the pub instead, freeing up plenty of room for Gingerbread while also pleasing punters who like to drink their Android neat . If it can work Down Under in August, other operators around the world ought to be able to make it work too. And if they don’t, there’s always the option of a spicy home-brewed beverage instead. Vodafone’s vermilion veneered HTC Desire S gets a hands-on

What happens when you take a great phone and throw a handful of red plastic and metal at it? Why, an exclusive red Vodafone Desire S, that’s what. Pocket-lint had an opportunity to fondle the new iteration, and, not surprisingly, concluded that new tint aside nothing else — unlike the ChaCha which has seen a 200Mhz speed boost since launch — has changed. What’s not immediately apparent from the photo above is that HTC has taken a two-tone approach here with the metal housing getting one color and the plastic bits and pieces a much darker red. But color aside, this Desire S is the twin of the handset we’ve already seen launched and had the pleasure of reviewing . So if you dig pics of shiny phones flipped this way and that — and come on now, we know you do — follow the read link for the goods. HTC pulls a 180, now says Gingerbread is coming to Desire

So, here’s the tally: as of June 14th, there’s just ” not enough memory ” in the Desire for Gingerbread to run properly. As of the 15th, however, there is. We won’t pretend to understand what changed so drastically in the past 24 hours, but what is clear is that the aforesaid handset maker is listening to its most demanding of users. While it’s safe to assume that the Average Joe (or Jane) wouldn’t be able to recognize the difference between Android 2.2 and 2.3, folks clamoring for the update seem to have coerced the company to make things work. In other words, it looks like the update is back on… now it’s just a matter of making it run well . Kudos HTC, and godspeed. HTC Desire tries to catch Gingerbread, can’t keep up

After months attempting to bring the Desire up to speed with Android 2.3 , HTC is throwing in the towel, and it doesn’t have much more than a comments section full of disappointed handset owners to show for it. The UK branch of the phone manufacturer announced via its Facebook page that attempts to upgrade the Nexus One-esque smartphone to Gingerbread have proven fruitless, due to a lack of internal memory on the device. According to the company, the promised update just won’t play nicely with its Sense UI. Those desiring less official methods can always check out the leaked 2.3.3 ROM . Everyone else will have to suffer through the Froyo brain freeze. HTC starts OTA Gingerbread updates for Desire HD and Incredible S

It’s true, it’s true. HTC is today extending some tender loving care to owners of the Desire HD and Incredible S handsets in the form of an over-the-air update delivering Android 2.3. We’ve seen the notice of the new firmware update on the company’s European support site, though our UK-based Incredible S has yet to be pinged with a refreshing dose of Gingerbread. Shouldn’t be long now, though! That just leaves the Desire Z and original Desire, both of which should be joining the party by the end of June .
