Microsoft Tag comes out of beta, promises free colorful codes for all

admin It was about a year and a half ago that Microsoft decided it could do QR codes better, that any universal coding system needed a dash of color, and launched Tag . Now, the roughly one billion Tags that users have printed have been made a little less illegitimate, with Microsoft bringing the service out of beta and taking the opportunity to toot Tag’s trumpet a bit. The codes have appeared in 20 million magazines so far and have recently been deployed to create a sort of tour for geeks in Amsterdam (no word on whether our own international man of mystery is featured). Meanwhile America’s cultural hub, the Mall of America, has been similarly bestickered to “enhance customer engagement,” but based on our previous experiences at that bastion of commercialism we’re thinking scooters and foot massages might have been more effective. March 28th, 2010 jedwan Alright, kiddies, gather ’round, because it’s time for everyone’s favorite class: Palm Model Codes 101. As you might recall from Sunnyvale’s previous exploits in the FCC’s system, P101 devices are Pres, while P121s are Pixis. That part of the code is followed by a three-character string indicating the radio type: EWW for CDMA, UEU for European GSM, and UNA for North American GSM. Using everything we know there, we can safely deduce that the P121UNA that just crossed the wires is the AT&T-branded version of the Pixi Plus , a device that we know to be hitting shelves “in the coming months.” Whether FCC certification was one of the roadblocks in getting it launched is a mystery, but it certainly can’t hurt the process, can it? March 5th, 2010 admin Valtteri Halla — Nokia employee and one-half of MeeGo’s Technical Steering Group — has blogged up a storm this week about the first baby steps that’ll get the platform off the ground from its Moblin and Maemo roots, and from the sounds of things, we’ll be able to get our first glimpse at it on production hardware before the month’s out. Currently, the plan is to open up MeeGo’s code repository to all comers “by the end of this month,” targeting both Atom boards and the N900 . Now, we certainly wouldn’t say that MeeGo’s decision to use the N900 as an early target device is indicative of an official upgrade down the line — but this is particularly interesting in light of the fact that we’ve never gotten a commitment out of Nokia to bump its latest MID to Maemo 6 . And besides, considering that the average N900 customer is a bit of a hacker in his or her own right, let’s be honest: a code repository that supports the phone is just about as good as an official gold build anyhow.
