Nokia’s Android flirtations revealed
June 24th, 2011
jedwan We don’t know if this device is ” super confidential ” or not, but we’ve just come across yet another Nokia N9 lookalike with a non-MeeGo operating system on board. Well, it looks that way, anyhow. There’s no way to verify that the Android homescreen we see above is a legitimate Gingerbread installation and not a mere screenshot (the resolution looks all wrong, for one thing), but the source of this image is the same Chinese fellow that posted a picture of Nokia’s Windows Phone prototype, the Sea Ray , way back in May, so we’re inclined to believe he’s got an inside line on these things. Additionally, the undersized Android UI elements on the screen actually encourage us to believe that this is indeed a Nokia testing device — if we were going to fake something like this, we’d use a regular screen grab for our tomfoolery — and Stephen Elop has openly admitted that Nokia spent a couple of wild seconds contemplating a switch to Android. Well, folks, here’s what that alternate future might have looked like. Nokia brings Symbian^3 to China Mobile, officially announces T7-00 and 702T
June 16th, 2011
admin Though its visits have been few and far between, Nokia has had a presence on China Mobile for many years. The carrier’s never been blessed, however, with any TD-SCDMA devices powered by Symbian^3 — until now. Two new flagship models, known as the T7-00 and 702T, were announced by both companies and slated for Q3 release. If both phones seem oddly familiar, there’s a very good reason why: the T7-00, as we originally speculated , is a variant of the Nokia N8 with a lower-quality 8 megapixel EDoF sensor; the 702T is the TD-SCDMA version of the E6 , though the keyboard has been altered slightly to include larger Function and Ctrl buttons, allowing for easier switching between Chinese and English input. Both phones will be pre-loaded with the Anna update, and could be a big factor in helping Nokia hit its goal of selling 150 million Symbian devices before the OS goes the way of the Dodo . Check out another image after the break. Motorola Droid / Milestone 3 gets previewed, Verizon release finally nearing?
June 14th, 2011
jedwan The Motorola Droid 3 hasn’t exactly been doing the best job of staying under wraps, and it (or the international Milestone 3 variant, to be specific) has now landed in the hands of Chinese website xda.cn , which has provided what’s surely the most extensive look at the phone to date. That includes some additional confirmation of specs like a 4-inch qHD screen (of the PenTile variety, it seems), an 8 megapixel camera, HDMI out and a 1500 mAh battery, as well as what appear to be the first benchmarks of the phone and its dual-core OMAP 4430 processor, which is apparently slightly hampered by a mere 512MB of RAM. In other Droid 3 news, Droid Life notes that the device has turned up in Gameloft’s compatibility listings for its Android games, and says that its hearing that Verizon is now targeting a July 7th launch. That’s obviously still far from confirmed, but it seems safe to bet that a release can’t be too much farther off now. Hit the source link below for xda.cn ‘s complete preview. Netcom shows off microSD card with integrated NFC goodness (video)
June 4th, 2011
jedwan Here’s an interesting idea from a Chinese company called Netcom (not to be confused with the Norwegian operator): adding NFC capability to existing phones via microSD. That’s right, rather than relying on external add-ons that occupy ports, Netcom decided to fit NFC chips plus their antennas onto ordinary microSD cards, yet still managing to cram in up to 8GB of NAND memory at the same time. This sure sounds convenient, but there are some caveats: the first rule is that neither the back cover nor the microSD card holder should be made out of metal; then secondly, we noticed that due to the tiny antenna coil, scanning could become tricky if the reader has a small sensing area — you’d need to position your phone at just the right spot; and lastly, the phone needs a special background app to communicate with the NFC circuitry. The demo we saw used a Java app running on a Chinese dumbphone, and we were told that Android will be next in line to receive similar support. Alas, consumers won’t be able to pick up one of these cards from the shops, though Netcom’s already working with a “top ten” phone manufacturer on a compatible device due in three to six months, so stay tuned. Hands-on video after the break. Update: As pointed out by some readers, it turns out that DeviceFidelity beat Netcom to the market last year. Huawei dips its foot into Windows Phone pool, considers going for a swim
May 30th, 2011
jedwan Wherefore art thou, Huawei ? Noticeably absent from the Windows Phone party last week, we were left to wonder if the Chinese manufacturer is still on the fence or it hopped off and walked away from WP7 altogether. After an interview with ZDNet , Huawei CMO Victor Xu confirmed that his company is indeed keeping a close eye on the platform and will “probably” have something cooked up and ready to go in 2012. This can’t be much of a surprise since ZTE threw its hat into the ring last week, and Huawei won’t want to lose much ground to its bitter rival. Nothing is set in stone yet, but this is still good news for Microsoft, which has a lot to gain by gathering another OEM into its fold. Latest WP7 Mango leak hints at added Windows Messenger support
May 12th, 2011
admin The upcoming Windows Phone update is looking better with each subsequent leak. What initially appeared to be primarily targeted toward programmers has since begun bearing fruit on the user’s end , a trend continued with this latest unauthorized glimpse. We’re certainly taking it with a few tablespoons of salt — the Mango screens appeared on and were subsequently pulled from Chinese site Cnblogs — but we like what we see. Perhaps most significant among the newly glimpsed features here is integration between WP7′s People hub and Windows Live Messenger, making it possible to IM people directly from the contacts list. Also present, Bing Image Search, support for East Asian languages, and added SkyDrive functionality, which we’ve already seen previewed . No doubt we’ll be hearing more on this very subject in the near future . More info as the story ripens.
