BlackBerry Bold 9900 / 9930 shipping with magnetometer-friendly augmented reality app

Sick of all of the RIM news coming out around this week’s BlackBerry World in Orlando? Good news, neither are we. If you were still on the fence about the Bold 9900 and 9930 , here’s something that might sway you back onto Research in Motion’s side of the Canadian border. It seems the magnetometer-packing smartphones will ship with World Browser, an app from augmented reality purveyors Wikitude that overlays geo-referenced information from Twitter and Facebook on top of live video shot by the phones. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the app, of course — it’s also available for iOS, Android, and Symbian devices, which certainly doesn’t do much to dispel the notion that the company is still playing catch up with the competition. Perhaps the phones could use a little reality distortion as well. BlackBerry Bold Touch makes brief appearance on RIM’s website

As you may have have been able to discern from the multitude of leaks that have surfaced over the past few months, RIM is apparently getting set to debut a new touchscreen-equipped BlackBerry Bold at BlackBerry World next week. While still not completely official, that’s now been all but confirmed by RIM itself, which briefly featured the teaser pictured above on its website before pulling it for reasons unknown. As you can see, RIM apparently couldn’t help itself and promised that it will be a “bold step ahead,” and it appears that the phone is unsurprisingly running BlackBerry 7, which until recently was better known as OS 6.1 . Of course, that’s hardly the only news we’re expecting to hear at BlackBerry World, and you can be sure we’ll be there to brave the puns and bring it all to you. BlackBerry Bold Touch 9930 gets the hands-on treatment, complete with elevator music (video)

Have the leaked specs and tutorial video got you yearning for more BlackBerry Bold Touch coverage? Well, today’s your lucky day, RIM-o-philes, because we’ve got new some moving pictures with real, live human fingers doing the touchscreen two-step on the diminutive display of a next-gen Bold 9930 (codename Montana). Though a small sample, the footage does confirm earlier reports that the screen is quite responsive, so it shouldn’t have trouble making capacitive converts out of those in the optical trackpad troop. We know, BlackBerry World and the new Bold’s debut can’t come soon enough, so do some self-soothing, view the new vid, and breathe — you’ll have your hands on one before you know it. RIM deems BlackBerry OS 6.1 a ‘major upgrade,’ promises a spring release

We weren’t expecting to hear too much about it, but RIM’s year-end / Q4 fiscal 2011 earnings call uncovered a good bit of information surrounding BlackBerry OS 6.1. As you’ve likely learned by now, we weren’t exactly throwing our iPhones and Droids into the nearest refuse bin after handling the Torch , and it seems as if quite a few bigwigs at RIM were equally disappointed. In response to a question about the rollout of BB OS 6.1, we were told that it would truly be a “major upgrade” over what’s out there now, and rather than being an incremental update, it’ll be more like “an overhaul.” The company made no bones about its excitement for the release, and frankly, we’re having a hard time keeping our expectations in check after listening in. Thankfully, we’ll be able to get our paws on it at some point this spring, with a number of elements to be teased at BlackBerry World this May. Naturally, we’ll be there to keep you up-to-date with how it’s rolling along.
