$99 Etymotic mc2 earbuds claim market-beating noise isolation, full platform ambivalence

Etymotic specializes in putting inexpensive moving coil drivers inside noise-isolating buds that can, as an optional upgrade, be individually molded via the company’s international “Custom-fit” program. Previous models have been iDevice only, at least in terms of their microphone function and button controls, but the new mc2 should also get along happily with Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, WebOS and Symbian smartphones and tablets. It’s due for release by the end of the week for $99, which will buy you noise isolation up to a claimed market-beating 42dB, 8mm (0.3-inch) dual-magnet neodymium drivers, an all-important mic and an assortment of ear tips — Custom-fit costs extra, and substantially so. Listen carefully and you might just hear the PR after the break squeaking for your attention. Re: Switch from PURE to INSPIRE or….

Inspire is a nice phone, and if you’ve been an HTC fan for this long (like me) you might want to keep it that way.  Motorola phones have been underwhelming to me for some time now.  While I haven’t handled the Atrix in person, other recent Moto phones just feel cheap, plasticky, and clunky.  And I’ve read comments that the Atrix (while an improvement) is still not up to HTC’s current excellent build quality.  Samsung makes pretty nice hardware, but still not up to par with HTC as far as the phone casing (but the Samsung displays are top notch).  The other rub is that Samsung software support is horrible.  They are the slowest at releasing updates, and TouchWiz stinks compared to Sense (as does Moto Blur).  If you read around, the Galaxy S series (including the Captivate) has had a ton of software problems which cause UI lag and poor GPS reception.  Not sure if there are any issues like this with the new Infuse.  But you might want to investigate it, if you are interested in that device.   Plus, if developer support like mods and custom ROMs are an interest to you, HTC devices  still get the bulk of the attention.

Meizu M9 gets Gingerbread update, taunts townsfolk to catch and eat it

We were admittedly a bit skeptical when Meizu CEO Jack Wong first starting talking up the M9 Android handset — in fact, the word “vaporware” may have been tossed around a bit. The exec proved our caution unfounded, however, delivering the phone into the hands of China’s incredibly enthusiastic smartphone buyers . Then Wong briefly turned his attention away from the handset to give us a taste of its successor , but now the he’s back — with a downloadable Gingerbread update for his beloved M9. Results of the upgrade have been mixed at best, with users reporting some minor power and display problems on one end of the spectrum and improved audio the other. If you must download, check out the source link below — just don’t say we didn’t warn you. New LG Android Release(s) – LG Phoenix/Thrive

Greetings LG board viewers,   It has come to my attention that a new LG smartphone is coming to AT&T on this Sunday, April 17, 2011. The name(s) of this new Android-powered smartphone are the LG Phoenix and the LG Thrive. They are basically the exact same phone, except that the Thrive is for prepaid GoPhone customers only (like myself) and the Phoenix is for regular postpaid customers. The Thrive will cost $179.99 on a prepaid account, no contract required. The new Phoenix will cost $49.99 with a qualifying new two-year contract. The Thrive comes in a silver color, and the Phoenix in a dark blue.   The LG Thrive is the first smartphone to be intended for AT&T’s prepaid customers only. However, in order to get a new Thrive, you will now be required to add a prepaid data plan to your account… The plans are $25 for 500MB, $15 for 100MB, and $5 for 10MB. This is the first “forced” data plan for prepaid customers, essentially, not a good thing. But when you look at the bright side, the prepaid data packages have been improved. The old packages were $4.99 for just 1MB of data, and $19.99 for the same 100MB plan (now $4.99 cheaper).   A full line of specs for these phones include…   * Android 2.2 platform * HSDPA 7.2 3G data speeds * 600MHz application processor * 3.2″ 320 x 480 262k color full-touch display * Wi-Fi/aGPS capable * 160MB User Memory w/ microSD storage (up to 32GB) * 2GB microSD card installed * 3.2MP Auto-focus camera * Stereo Bluetooth * Quad-band GSM / Tri-band 3G (world capable) * 1500 mAh long-life battery * Text/Picture and Video Messaging support * POP3/IMAP/Gmail/EAS email support   Additional information for the new LG Phoenix/Thrive can be found here:   http://m.engadget.com/default/article.do?artUrl=http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/froyo-based-lg-thrive-becomes-atandts-first-prepaid-smartphone-s/&category=classic&postPage=1   http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=19623&cdvn=news&newsarticleid=31797&mapcode=consumer%7Cmobile-devices   http://www.androidcentral.com/lg-thrive-and-lg-phoenix-announced-bring-affordable-and-prepaid-smartphones-att

I Used a Sea Cave as a Cell Phone Amplifier

In what may be the most impractical discovery I’ve ever made, it came to my attention last week that sea caves make serviceable cell phone amplifiers.
