You probably wouldn’t pay $6 for an iPhone app that lets you browse through car models and pump stereo exhaust sounds directly to your drums. But a $6 Aston Martin Experience app that also displays speed and Gs as you film your drive from behind the wheel of a 2011 Rapide? We might be in love. The British automaker’s latest app can do all of the above, and also includes a list of “top roads” — most of which are in Europe. Our friends at Autoblog paired the app with a loaner Rapide (and we thought playing with cell phones was cool), driving up California’s Aston-approved Pacific Coast Highway. The reviewers may have spent more time focusing on the car than the app, but when you’re driving a $200,000, 477 horsepower aluminum beast for the first time, the iPhone easily becomes an afterthought. Aston claims that the Experience can be had with any other car, but if you’re looking to get the experience, be prepared to spent a little more than six bucks. Aston Martin Experience could be the ultimate iPhone accessory, but you’re gonna want the car originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Jun 2011 02:38:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . iOS 5 beta 2 blocks Gevey SIM Unlock, brings photo album curation to iDevices
June 28th, 2011
jedwan It’s only been a few days since Apple released iOS 5 beta 2, but we’ve already received a bevy of tips from developers who’ve spent some quality time with the update and uncovered a few of its more salient features. Here are some highlights. It looks like Apple has blocked Applenberry’s Gevey SIM software, which allowed users to unlock devices running iOS 4.3 or iOS 5 beta 1 without having to jailbreak. ( Read ) According to Dev Team member MuscleNerd, iOS 5 beta 2 can still be jailbroken using the RedSn0w 0.9.8b1 tethering tool, released earlier this month. ( Read ) The beta refresh also brings a few tweaks to iOS 5′s notifications system. Traditional alerts and reminders now pop up on the lock screen in larger typeface, alongside their appropriate icon. If left unattended, the notifications will eventually be added to the Android-like banner menu, at the top of the lock screen. ( Read ) Users can now create and curate photo albums directly from their iDevices, though the feature isn’t without its quirks. A tipster informs us that photos added to new albums remain in the original collection, as well. If you migrate an image from one album to another and delete the original, both pics will disappear. The next beta release might be issued over the air. When a tipster checked for updates on an iPad running beta 2, he received a “No updates were found” message, suggesting that users may be able to find future refreshes without syncing their devices with iTunes. (Screenshot after the break.) Update : We’re hearing from many of you that the gallery functionality was actually a part of beta 1. But, you’re encouraged to continue enjoying it here, in beta 2. Nokia claims N9 is ‘the fastest image-capturing phone’ yet
June 23rd, 2011
jedwan We’ve already established that the N9 is a delight of a phone, both inside and out, but our hands-on time with Nokia’s new flagship gave us only a brief look at its camera performance. Now the company is graciously filling that gap in our knowledge with some further disclosure about its new 8 megapixel imager, including the lofty claim that the N9 is the fastest phone yet when it comes to capturing an image — ousting the likes of the iPhone 4, the Galaxy S II, and even the Canon S95 , perhaps the best pocket camera around at the moment. Measuring the time taken from activating the camera app to the completion of the first shot, the N9 clocks in at 2.6 seconds, whereas Apple’s latest does it in 3 seconds and Samsung’s takes a split second more. Aside from its speed, the N9 has Carl Zeiss optics, a wide F2.2 max aperture, dual-LED flash, continuous autofocus, and a 720/30p video mode to boast about, but the benefits of those items will need to be experienced first hand. So Nokia, when are you shipping this thing? Nokia claims N9 is ‘the fastest image-capturing phone’ yet originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 05:51:00 EST. Bluetooth SIG takes aim at sensor market, adds Apple and Nordic to board of directors
June 23rd, 2011
admin The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (aka Bluetooth SIG ) has some fairly grand plans for the future of its wireless technology, and it’s now recruited some big players to help get it there. The group announced yesterday that it’s added both Apple and Nordic Semiconductor to its board of directors — companies that it says will help it “drive Bluetooth technology’s expansion into platform and sensor markets.” In particular, the group is setting its sights on wireless health sensors, which it hopes to finally gain a real foothold in thanks the lower power requirements of the Bluetooth 4.0 standard , and thanks to the experience of Nordic, which has a long history of working with such devices. Full press release is after the break. Apple granted patent for ‘portable multifunction devices’ with multitouch screens
June 23rd, 2011
jedwan Avid watchers of tech know that Apple is almost as good at requesting patents (though, its record of defending them is somewhat less impressive ) as it is at actually creating compelling products. Three years after initially filing for the design of a “portable multifunction device” with a multitouch interface, the USPTO has awarded the Cupertino crew a patent that’s sure to raise few eyebrows amongst its competitors. At a glance, the language seems to cover practically any device that allows touch input to control content in a frame on a webpage independent of controlling the rest of the page — which we’re sure Jobs and co. are excited to add to their growing stockpile of claims to gestures and capacitive displays . Of course, a rival would have to infringe on all elements of a patent’s independent claims before it’d need to fear the courtroom, so it’s probably best not to get too hot and bothered here. For those looking to pore over the specifics, that source link is a good place to head.
