Samsung makes sure you know the Galaxy S II is really, really thin with silly new ad (video)

Samsung seems to be killing time until it finally ships the Galaxy S II by making promo videos for its dual-core superphone . The latest in a series of ads for the S II spends a few precious seconds reminding us just how excellently thin it is, and gives us a particular usage scenario where that slim profile truly becomes practical. We won’t spoil that for you, though we should play spoiler in noting the barely readable small print above — “Thickness of the device may differ by country or carrier.” So remember, just because you and your pen pal from across the world are both buying a product with an excruciatingly specific title like Samsung Galaxy S II doesn’t mean you’ll both get the same thing. All that said, the 8.49mm-thick version of the device is ready to wow you on video just past the break. We’ve thrown a couple of Samsung’s earlier commercials in there as well, just to complete the set. AT&T and Verizon are the same bag of 3G hurt for iPhone owners, says T-Mobile (video)

Want some help with your newfound choice of iPhone carrier? Let T-Mobile break it down for you in an entirely unbiased and dispassionate fashion. The pink carrier’s latest hit piece commercial highlights the fact that, whether on Verizon or AT&T, the iPhone only has recourse to 3G connectivity, painting the two carriers as a pair of grey suits distinguishable only by the color of their ties. It’s a cute way to promote your own 4G network, sure, but it conveniently disregards the fact that Verizon’s enriching its LTE ( Lightning! Thunder! Electric! ) network with some true superphones while AT&T is similarly committed to a 2011 LTE rollout . So, really, the only thing under critique here is Apple’s rapidly aging 3G wonder. Skip the break to see the video ad. Google Goggles now solves Sudoku, taking an interest in ads, clearly entering middle age

There are no surer signs of the apocalyptic onset of middle age than a preoccupation with puzzle-solving and an unhealthy interest in adverts and barcodes. And those just happen to be the three new features Google has added to version 1.3 of its Goggles software. The visual search application for Android is now intelligent enough to decipher tricky Sudoku puzzles (and thereby suck all the fun out of them), while its algorithms have also been tweaked to make barcode scanning “almost” instant. Popular printed ads will be recognized as well, taking you to a Google search on the relevant topic. US newspapers and magazines from August 2010 are being supported for now, but we can’t imagine the rest of the world should have to wait too long for this added convenience. Video of the new Goggles’ Sudoku skills after the break. Canalys: iPhone becomes most popular smartphone in the US, Android continues as most popular OS

The Canalys numbers are out, and with Android coming off an 886 percent jump reported at the end of the second quarter we were expecting something big. So, here it is: Android is up 1,309 percent worldwide from this time last year, taking over 43.6 percent of the US smartphone market in the third quarter. In terms of mobile operating systems that makes it the dominant player in America, but with Apple capturing 26.2 percent it now jumps into the lead when it comes to hardware, beating out RIM’s 24.2 percent. That’s a swap from last quarter, where BlackBerries beat iPhones 32 to 21.7 percent, and worldwide things are looking the same: Apple at 17 percent compared to RIM’s 15. However around the globe it’s Nokia and the Symbian Foundation still dominating the stage as the leading smart phone OS vendor, owning 33 percent of the market compared to 38 last quarter, while Microsoft sits at a lowly 3 percent. With WP7 ready to rock the world, and Ballmer ready to release the advertising hounds , that’s a figure we’ll be keeping a close eye on for the next few quarters. Palm and AT&T give the Pre Plus (and WebOS) an ad we can all agree is not completely terrible

Hey, hey, look at this! A short, sweet Palm Pre Plus ad that shows off the phone’s innovative UI, its ability to multitask, and its 3D gaming — you know, all the great stuff it can do. This is just what pretty much everyone who’s ever had the misfortune of seeing the creepy Palm lady or the Verizon “Mom” ads has been desperately seeking. Sure, it’s taken a over a year for a half-decent ad, and sure, we’ve only seen this one on the web thus far, but we’re hoping to see this one make it to real, live TV, too — because even if it’s a little boring and the music kinda stinks, it’s better than the other options. KTF wants everyone to Bubi Bubi (video)

Look, Korea has a unique tech culture unrivaled by anything we’ve experienced in the West. But when Korean carrier KTF coaxes us into a “bubi bubi” dance grind, well, we just have to stare. What is it about a dumbphone that could prompt such behavior? B-U-B-I after the break. Microsoft takes a note from Palm in new Windows Phone 7 Series ad

We’ve held no punches in sharing our thoughts on Palm’s recent ad campaigns , but the one spot that was actually not heinous has seemingly served as the basis for one of Microsoft’s first-ever WP7S commercials. Debuting here at the tail-end of MIX , the ad spotlights Anna — a fictitious gal we’ve certainly heard of before — using her new smartphone to share photos with her dear lover Miles. It also features Luca, a kid with an undying love for playing Xbox LIVE titles , who seems to be caught somewhere in between the world of nature and nurture. At any rate, it’s worth your while to give the new Microsoft commercial and the Palm ad which it has oh-so-much in common with right after the break. Oh, and Palm — we guess “Windows Phone 7 Series was your idea ,” right? Update : Yes, that definitely looks like an HTC HD2 at the 0:43 mark, but you can rest assured WP7S won’t ever come to that gem in native fashion.
