TomTom’s iPhone App gets updated, brings HD traffic updates along for the ride

Hate gridlock? We’d surmise you aren’t alone, so pardon our excitement surrounding the latest addition to TomTom’s longstanding iPhone app. New in version 1.8 is the addition of HD Traffic , which extends congestion data to both “major” and “secondary” US roads. Existing TomTom Traffic subscribers get the functionality gratis, with the rest of us dishing out $20 via an in-app purchase. Free for all who upgrade are multi-stop routes, allowing one to tweak excursions to your heart’s content — provided you can count those diversions on one hand. The updated app is already live in the App Store, but please, pull over before downloading — cool? T-Mobile doubles speed in 42 of its HSPA+ 4G markets

T-Mobile’s choice of fast just got doubly faster in 42 — clever, right? 42 new markets for its 42Mbps service — of its HSPA+ markets. With this addition the tally for the faster service now stands at 97 centers — when added to the 55 we saw launched back in May. To answer the question about how fast, T-Mobile’s stating that average download speeds approach 10Mbps with a purported peak of 27Mbps on its Rocket 3.0 sticks. So if you’re lucky enough to call Albuquerque, San Diego, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, or any of the other 38 new spots home, you’re golden — and maybe reading this a little quicker than that fella next to you. If you’ve missed this ship, fear not, this expansion won’t be over anytime soon as T-Mob has it has its sights set on covering 190 million users by mid-year. Full PR is just a click away. Sprint reports Q1 2011 results, adds 1.1 million subscribers

It’s financials time and the word hasn’t always been rosy for Sprint of late, but this time the company has some good news to share. In this, the first quarter of 2011, Sprint added 1.1 million total subscribers, 846,000 of those were prepaid, the other 310,000 postpaid. Churn was down too, 4.36 for prepaid and 1.81 percent for postpaid, lowest in five years for the former and lowest ever for the latter. Operating income was $259 million on $8.3 billion in revenue, which is up three percent from this time last year, but factor in taxes, lunar landing rights, and all the other fun stuff and the company posted a net loss of $439 million. CEO Dan Hesse called this “slow but steady progress,” and the addition of subscribers “a tough streak to keep going as the bar keeps getting higher.” A tough streak indeed, but the launch of phones like the Nexus S 4G might just help keep it alive for another quarter. Samsung’s LTE-enabled Droid Charge coming to Verizon on April 28th for $300 on contract

Ready for the era of $300 superphones? We know, we aren’t either, but the addition of LTE seems to be justification enough for Verizon Wireless and Samsung to toss a $299.99 subsidized price on the latter’s newest handset. After being leaked a few times over , the borderline-ominous phone is finally getting official. April 28th is the day, with consumers then able to grab a 4.3-inch AMOLED Plus display, rear-facing 8 megapixel camera, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing shooter, 1GHz processor, Android 2.2 and LTE support. Unlimited 4G data plans are still being hawked for $29.99, and while the entry price definitely stings, having mobile hotspot for “no additional charge” is certainly a perk. Might want to be first in line, though — that last snippet will only be offered for “a limited time.” Continue reading Samsung’s LTE-enabled Droid Charge coming to Verizon on April 28th for $300 on contract Samsung’s LTE-enabled Droid Charge coming to Verizon on April 28th for $300 on contract originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 21 Apr 2011 12:34:00 EST.
