Steve Ballmer: Kin ‘defocused activity from Windows Phone’

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has been willing to admit some of the company’s missteps in the past, and he’s just done so again in addressing the now infamous Kin . Speaking with The Seattle Times , Ballmer said that the “No. 1 message from Kin is a message of focus,” and that ultimately, “it just defocused activity from Windows Phone.” Not exactly a huge surprise by any means, but it’s still pretty notable to hear straight from the top, especially considering how much it cost Microsoft to learn that message. As for the rest of the interview, Ballmer didn’t make a ton of news, but he did say that we’ll be seeing additional Windows 7 tablet form factors starting this Christmas, and he revealed that he does in fact have a Facebook page, but he won’t say which of the many Steve Ballmer pages is the real one. Hit up the source link below to read the whole thing. Steve Ballmer: Kin ‘defocused activity from Windows Phone’ originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 13:50:00 EST. Sprint Epic 4G update coming tomorrow, should fix 3G upload issues

So, you aren’t crazy after all. Feels good, right? After nearly a month of bickering from Epic 4G owners, a Sprint forum administrator has finally come forward with glowing news about this so-called 3G upload issue: a fix is coming, and soon. If you missed out on the story, users were finding that their 3G uploads were being capped at around 150kbps , and a ginormous thread over at the carrier’s message board has grown as the problem has persisted. Just today, though, one dshoem01 has provided the following snippet: “Good news – an update will be released tomorrow 9/30. It will be rolled out over a 4 day period so not everyone will get it on day 1. I will have the standard MR information (fixes included, rollout schedule, etc) available tomorrow morning and will post it in a new featured thread.” Note that this doesn’t specifically say that the 3G caps will be fixed here, but why else post this newsflash in the very thread that surrounds the issue? Rest assured, our fingers are firmly crossed. [Thanks, Bradley ] Sprint Epic 4G update coming tomorrow, should fix 3G upload issues originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 14:18:00 EST. Motorola ES400S earns its keep on Sprint in October

You may not remember the Motorola ES400 announced back in June; it’s the first device to run Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Handheld platform, after all — an offshoot of WinMo 6.5.3 — and doesn’t have a whole lot of relevance to the average consumer. Well, let this be your refresher: Sprint has revealed that it intends to launch its own version of the phone, the ES400S, through a variety of Sprint sales channels next month, marking the first time an enterprise-oriented Moto has been branded and offered directly by a carrier. It meets a variety of standards for ruggedness and includes a 3-inch VGA display, full QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera (which actually performs the barcode scanning duties, not a traditional laser scanner), 802.11a / b / g, GPS, and both CDMA with EV-DO Rev. A and GSM / HSPA for international use. You get a 1540mAh battery in the box, but a whopping 3080mAh unit is available separately if you plan on enterprisin’ away from a charger for days on end. “Qualified” businesses will be able to get in on the ES400S starting sometime before the end of October for $499.99, while average Joes will have the option of paying $549.99 on a new two-year deal. Follow the break for the press release. Epic 4G: problems so far — and a few solutions

Since the Epic 4G launched on Sprint August 31, we’ve been receiving notes from owners on various issues they’ve experienced with the phone. We’ve heard about and experienced problems with the supposedly-fixed GPS , to surprisingly slow 3G uploads (fix on the way), to odd issues with battery drain and glitchy market install problems. Now that we’re facing the end of Sprint’s 30-day return period , we’re wondering if Sprint and Samsung have shown enough of a commitment to resolving any problems to keep owners and potential buyers hanging on. Check after the break for a few of the issues we’ve found and what can be done about them, and let us know in our poll how optimistic you are about the future of this otherwise well-received device. T-Mobile G2 now shipping to some pre-orderers

You can’t grab one of these bad boys from your local store just yet — you’ll have to wait until early October for that — but some current T-Mobile customers who’d pre-ordered the G2 (including our own Myriam Joire) are reporting that their devices have shipped. That means we’ll probably see at least a few of these showing up in excited forum threads tomorrow, and a whole phalanx of ‘em by week’s end. Get those QWERTY thumbs oiled and warmed up, folks.
