Will it automatically find the phone off of the USB connection of the PC ?   You need ActiveSync to install the ROM.  You do not have to configure ActiveSync.  After installing ActiveSync (and associated reboots) plug in the phone to the USB cable.  When the ActiveSync window comes up, simply cancel the action.  Your phone will be connected but not configured.  This will allow you to update the ROM. At this point, yes it is just that simple to double-click the .exe file.  You will loose all the information on the phone (contacts, configurations, any software loaded, etc.) so make sure that’s Ok before proceeding.  It will be like a brand new phone when you are done upgrading.  If you’re not using ActiveSync, PIMBackup is a good tool to use to backup your contacts and messages.
