Nokia N900 glitch leads to useful portrait mode, caught on video

File this under “it’s not a bug, it’s a feature” if true. According to Guyver at the maemo.org forums, some glitch in the OS caused his Nokia N900 to switch into portrait mode for everything, not just dialer and photo apps as previously allowed. We’d love to eliminate the need for two hands to run our favorite chunks of mobile software, but so far we haven’t been able to recreate his trick. Try it at home if you’d like by tilting the device to launch the phone app, then sliding up the screen and closing the app. Perhaps the gang at Espoo can turn this into a legit update — if they’re awesome people, of course. Video after the break. Returned the phone to AT&T today

Greetings,   Well after spending about15 hours on the Tilt 2, and liking many of its features, I threw in the towel today.  The final straw had to do with the unreliability of downloading e-mail messages.  Sometimes they would download just fine, sometimes I got the "check your settings" error message (nothing had changed on the phone) and it didn’t seem to matter whether I was using 3G, EDGE or WiFi to connect…same problems happened from time to time.   I called AT&T tech support (again) and this time the person I spoke with told me they are having increasing calls from customers who are complaining about e-mail downloads, the phone freezing and also crashing.  She said that she thought it was probably a hardware issue and that HTC would most likely come out with a patch, and when that happened, they’d push the patch to their customers.   I decided it just wasn’t worth investing more of my time in what seemed like buggy hardware.  I switched the SIM card back into my original Tilt and am back in business.  It’s not that the original tilt is so wonderful (it’s ok), but it IS reliable.   I just thought I’d let others know that the problem calls to AT&T tech support about the Tilt 2 seem to be increasing, so you don’t think it’s only your phone or only your problem.   Not sure what phone I’ll go to next…I’ll just sit back and wait for the next great thing.   Cheers!   J.

Mysterious iPhone model found in app usage records?

O iPhone3,1 , where art thou? Last time we spotted that signature, it was buried in lines of code as part of a beta OS 3.0 firmware build . Now according to data from analytics software inside iBART, the San Francisco-centric transportation app has been host to a new visitor with the aforementioned device identification number. As MacRumors points out, iPhone2,1 was originally spotted in October 2008 and later became the iPhone 3GS about eight months later. Not that it’s necessarily the case Apple will keep to the same schedule — nor should it come as a surprise that the company’s maybe-kinda-sorta looking into a successor to its prized moneymaker — but if you happen to be in the Bay Area and see someone quietly pulling out a sleek touchscreen, it might be in your best interest to make friends. Phone locks up sending SMS…. getting old.

Well so far, I have done everything I can think of to cost AT&T money about this issue short of just replacing the phone a dozen times (which won’t do anything for me).  I have to treat this pile of crap like a fragile little egg when sending text messages because inevitably it locks up when I slide out the keyboard.  When is this going to be fixed?
